Behind the Screen with Samuel Trussell

This edition of Behind the Screen gets personal with Paralegal Studies instructor, Samuel Trussell, MA, JD. Professor Trussell has a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in history and humanities. He began his professional life as a teacher at the community college level. He went on to teach history and humanities at the high school level, and English and ESL at the middle school level. While he taught middle school, he attended law school at night. After graduating, he worked for the LA County District Attorney and the Los Angeles City Attorney in the Criminal Appeals Division. He eventually left public service and entered private practice where he has worked as a plaintiff’s personal injury lawyer for 35 years, specializing in product liability and all forms of negligence.
Skills that students will gain in Mr. Trussell’s courses include reading, writing, speaking, and organizing your work in a timely manner. These skills are consistent with what you will be required to do as a paralegal. His advice for those looking to build a career as a paralegal is not to settle for the first job that you get. He encourages students to try different areas of law, such as the criminal side or the civil side, until you find something that suits you and your personality well.
