I am still very far from all these procedures. I am still learning to land on deck. 2 months ago I just performed touch and gos or exploded against the deck. After 2 weeks i had my first landing. One week after I could land once but a very unappropriate way . After a while I could land once in a week. Then i landed once every other day. Now I can land nearly every time I have an approach. It takes time at 72 but it pays off in the long run. The rule is patience , sequencing and time. Using the sidewinder 2 forcefeedback joystick ! I forgot to add I do not use autopilot for manoeuvering, all manual it's a better school.

I think you're supposed to set the TCN course for the direction mother is travelling, not it's direction minus the 10 degree angle of the landing area. The point of the heading is to help you line up with the upwind and downwind of the Case 1 pattern. You can line up with the 10 degree slant of the landing area yourself visually once you cross the wake.

Small tip for formation spacing at the break.
Each wingman after the break before them should do a 17 sec count.

The aircraft has a trimming function for a reason use it to get on speed AOA and the plane will be rock solid on speed, no need to touch the stick anymore instead for left and right corrections. Maybe watch the explaination from Jabber and others to get more knowledge about this topic.

Case I is typically done “ziplip” which means no contact with ATC inside of 10 mike radius. Fly the pattern and land. Also I think the orbit is basically a 5 mile DME....exit when abeam at the 180 20 degrees to the right for 2 miles. Turn back bringing altitude down to 800 for break once pass carrier.
There’s no reason to go so long behind the carrier on final. This makes it more difficult. You’re way “long in the groove”. Fly out further in front before you make your break. This give you a longer time to get proper established AOA for landing.
AEW has several hours of discussion on proper procedure. Jabbers has really good videos that explain proper Case I. You can also see videos of carrier qualification.
I’m new and I can do it. I can’t do aerial refuel for the life of me yet, so I know you have much better control than I do. LOL.
One more thing. The proper entry for course is BRC. Which is the direction of travel for the carrier. When taking off one former pilot commented that everything is referenced from BRC. So even when takeoff they do 20 degree clearing turn then proceed back to BRC for 5 miles under 500ft to deconflict.

The ATC mentioned in the CASE I diagram is the Automatic Throttle Control... when configured for landing the ATC can be used to help maintain proper speed and glideslope, I haven't tried it and if the flight model in full flaps, gear down is bad, then its not worth trying until fixed. Might give it a go ashore and see what happens.
Funny thing is it's always hands on approach so ATC isn't used, at least CASE I. I'd have to consult aircrew I worked with. Despite what the NFM-000 or -500 (both have the diagram you used) say; I think the SOP is just safer for proper corrections and accurate grading from the ball call to the deck.

    @Nanne118 Před 6 lety +4

Great work cap, I know its a bit more work than your previous go at it but it looks so much smoother and coordinated (better :P). Would it also be a correct assumption to say that you find it now easier to do (it looks so)?
The proper frequency of the carrier is normally conveyed to you via the ATC (by calling up the carrier via its radio frequency), but as we know the ATC frequency is currently (very) broken and as such you will need to use the F10 menu (similar with the carrier heading, they would also tell you this). Also, if you are having trouble with engaging the autopilot (A/P) modes, you need to have your stick completely centered becasue otherwise they will not engage: a small deadzone will be helpful as no joystick (even the TM Warthog) is ever completely centered. You can setup an autopilot orbit, but you have to enage the A/P first and then trim / maneuver as desired to enter said orbit (eg for weapons delivery, target spotting or holding a point waiting for flight).
I would also like to mention that the flight model of the F18 with flaps down (possibly in combination with gear down?) is currently borked: it is way to difficult to stay on speed (maintain correct AOA, have amber donut on your AOA indexer) and as such it makes it really difficult during (carrier) landing, as you will need to resort to full MIL and possibly afterburner to maintain that on-speed AOA. Another error that makes landing on a carrier equally more difficult is that your AOA indexer tends to obscure the IFLOLS (meatball, carrier landing lights) on the carrier due to the monocular vision (i.e. ''cyclops'' or 1 eye vision) in DCS (unless you fly in VR). It was great seeing you use the ''Power for altitude, pitch for airspreed" mantra, as it really can be difficult to get used to (as normally you use the stick for altitude and the power for airspeed), its quite a different way of thinking :)
If you are (eventually) going to do night-time landings (which are a lot of fun, but even harder) the ''in-bound landing'' command in the communicaiton menu will illuminate the carrier lights for you, so you can actually see where the landing area is on the carrier in the pitch black. I can tell you it is proper difficult though, but I am sure you will figure it out when you get there! ;P
Overall, great landing and exquisite glideslope on the carrier (meatball)! It is very nice & great to see all the effort you, Sherman and all the others put into these videos and I find them fun to watch :D. I hope you guys also like my remarks / observations and that you do not find them to be bossy / pushy, as I do note that they can sometimes come across as such. Do you find them helpful, or would you rather I kept them to myself (quite content with doing so if you find them annoying)?

FYI in the hornet 1.3 miles a beam on position 2 is the sweet spot. Setting up the landing starts arguably on the downwind leg the better your down wind the better the landing. 1.3 a beam of paddles is where real hornet pilots aim for. Take it from me I'm a pilot...

I hate carrier landings.Whenever is possible i prefer a normal airport. It is very weird that i can land the F-18 on Kuznetsov most of the times ,but i cannot on Stennis! It's something with the landing cables. Many times on Stennis it doesn't catch the cable and so it doesn't stop.
Update:after a few months of "research" on how to land the F18 on carrier,i found what i was doing wrong. The main reason was that was trying to land on the right, on the long strip of the deck. That's why the hook couldn't catch the cables and the plane couldn't stop on deck. Now i land on the short left strip, and usually i manage it.

Is there any way to get your trim setting to appear on the HUD all the time? If not, is there way to show trim setting on the same DDI’s as your HSI? I know that I can see my trim setting on the FCS page of the DDI, but I hate to waste a DDI for the FCS page when all I really want to see is my trim setting.
I like to know what my trim setting is throughout all stages of my flight and there are times when I will need both DDI’s for navigation and tactical uses and I won’t be able to have the FCS page on one of the DDI’s. Optimally there should be a way to see your trim setting on the HUD.
Whenever I’m flying the F/A-18, I lose track of where my trim is set relative to zero trim and it’s obviously important to know. Having to have the FCS page shown all the time on one of the DDI’s isn’t practical.
Even in a Cessna 172, the trim wheel has a white line on it, so you always know where your trim is set relative to zero trim.

Does carrier actually move forward in the game? The wake of the ship makes it look like it is, but is it? On one hand, with the ship moving forward, I think it would slow the closing speed to the ship a little, making the landing a little easier. But on the other hand, you would have to keep correcting the heading slightly to the right to keep lined up with the runway during landing. Probably need rudder peddles to do it properly.

So how do you get so slow without dropping like a rock?
When I go in to land and get to below 200 knots I always just plummet and have to go to full afterburners to recover

There is a training walkthrough in the Trainings tab where you are talked through the same points as here while in the cockpit yourself, but that guy uses all the proper technical jargon so its damn near impossible to interpret. If you watch this and take this info to that training you can practice fairly easily, Cap does a better job at explaining what to do.

A few notes, and maybe I missed mention of them in the video or in earlier comments:
    1. There's an eye-safe laser right below the ramp at the aft end of the flight deck. If you see that it's amber you're lined up with the center line. If you see a slow green flash, you're a little right, and if you see a fast flash you're quite a bit right. It's the same with red for left. (In the old days there was only the center line and it's associated drop lights (maybe also called drop line) that hang down the aft end of the ship. If you could keep the center line and the drop lights in a straight line you were lined up. If you saw that they formed a slight horizontal V with the open end on the left, you were too far left, and vice versa for the right.
    2. During an approach ("in the groove") there should be a constant cycling of the glances between the ball, AOA indexer and center line, maybe with a bit more concentration on the ball.
    3. I don't know if it's still done, but aircraft in marshal have - or had - their tailhooks down.
You landed with the ball in the red, but I _really_ suck at carrier landings; I've destroyed half the Navy's fleet of Hornets and I'm now working my way through the Marine Corps inventory.

I find it so strange most people I hear talk about the carrier landings as being REALLY difficult at first even the so-called DCS VETS. IVE ONLY FLOWN MAYBE 20 HOURS TOTAL and most of it just fucking around IN THE 6+ YEARS I’ve owned the game, only JUST started flying in the hornet a couple days ago that I purchased well over a year ago. I tend to buy modulates and never touch them for a year+ (I know weird). I managed to land all three landings on the carrier CLEAN first attempt. Not going to lie and say 3 was as easy as the first two but it was nothing I would consider “a real challenge” now air refuel...... I just CANT. Every time I’ve tried I’ve spent LITERAL hours Oscillating in front of the drogue before I final just say FUCK THIS SHIT and shoot the god damned tanker down in a fit of rage. LOL

This is more of a ‘how not to do it’ video. At least you tried to do it, that’s more than most. Please if you are going to do a tutorial video, make sure you do it right. It’s ok to not do something right at first, but it’s not ok to teach people bad habits and wrongdoings. If you want to learn the actual pattern I’d be glad to help and you could make a more accurate tutorial video.
