  • Easy peasy!
    1. When bottling, leave 1-2cm of beer on top of the cake
    2. Stir it up and pour it into containers
    3. Pitch that into your next batch
    The yeast in this video was already on it's second gig having been in my recent batches of pale and amber ale, so now it will get a third run with tobedecidedale Did I mention that it's BRY97?
    Also, as I said when I first tried the amber I was a bit worried because it tasted very yeasty, but that was after only a couple of days in the bottle and it's since gone nice and normal, so no worries :o)

    I didn't see you sort the trub from your jars. Is that a good idea, to throw old trub into a new brew?

  • @johnharris9416
    @johnharris9416 Před 5 lety

    I usually order yeast in the mail because of distance, I get 3 packs of Safale US05 for around $20 delivered, until I found out that you could just gather up the yeast from a previous batch and pitch that, you can wash it, you use 50% yeast and 50% water put it in a jar and shake it then leave 30 mins to an hour and you get a 1 cm or so in the bottom, that is trub the rest is yeast suspended in water and you pour that off into another jar, but I usually do what you just did then, I chuck the whole lot of yeast in and it starts fermenting within an hour because of the high yeast cell count so it's around $7 a saving every time I brew and over time that adds up and in the end you get a superior brew with a healthy amount of yeast, this is also great for those expensive liquid yeasts that you buy, the reason why you can't get them as dried is because not all yeasts will dry out and be still viable so they have to remain liquid

    G'day mate . I was wondering were you got the tap from for fermenter . I ask as my original tap broke all the holding tabs off it half way through a brew . Luckily I noticed and taped it up . But now need a new one

    Great stuff! Was just planning on making my first yeast starter for a few larger beers i'm planning on doing. A IIPA and a NEIPA that I wouldn't mind having a stronger starting yeast for. Saw you had a stuck fermentation you put a starter into a while back.

    That is actually pretty genius. I always hestitate on using big brand yeasts. There is no question if they make better beers than your usual Coopers or such kit yeast but do they make so much better beer that you want to waste all those extra dollars on them? Eh... But recycling them like this makes the cost not a problem! All I need is few empty pickle jars.

  • @michael102
    @michael102 Před 4 lety +2

    What if you just poured a bottle of beer into a new batch as starter yeast? It's one less beer that you could drink but would it work?

    • @FastHomebrew
      @FastHomebrew  Před 4 lety

      It wouldn't be enough yeast, but you could probably save the yeast from 6 bottles and still enjoy the beer! Check out my "ESVA" videos where I harvest commercial yeast

To answer your question, they're light, they're cheap, you can tell by squeeze how well carbonated they are, and if they explode you don't have a glass grenade.

    Farming yeast should improve your beers and if you farm commercial beers that have left the yeast in their bottles ie Coopers beers you get to use commercial yeasts they keep secret!!!!! Not available unless you drink their beer--the sacrifices we make.
    You could try to pour off the top and middle layer of your yeast jars. The bottom layer is full of dead cells -which is not required or desired.
    There are lots of You-tube demo's on this.
    👍👍🤗

      I reactivated some Coopers yeast just last weekend actually! Also, I know I'm tipping in dead stuff but I'm unable to see the different layers and dead cells make good nutrient anyway so in it all goes

    • @daysandwords
      @daysandwords Před 5 lety

      @@FastHomebrew - I'd always be super scared of infection doing that.
      Like I know that everything inside the fermenter should be infection-free if the first beer you did in there was, but it would just seem to be really dangerous to me, because you don't actually get to check that it all stayed clean, so you could pitch all your nice ingredients into a vessel 'pre-loaded' with an infection.

    • @FastHomebrew
      @FastHomebrew  Před 5 lety

      Indeed, but if something's infected it's usually preeeeeetty bad so you probably would know. A quick taste of whatever has just been bottled or kegged ought to be a good test.
