What really gives ohtani the advantage is the ability to have first-person perspectives on both ends of a pitch. When he takes a pitch, he can (and often does) translate "oh that's a nasty pitch" to "I can use it in this way to make it even better," and "this is what they are not expecting in this situation."
Yes and No. In the past, in NL pitchers can experience AB and some can even hit HR but how many of them at the late 2nd half season introduced a total new pitch type and increased its speed 7 to 8 miles up within one week from 93 to 100&101 inside the zone box?! Even very few pitchers, like Darvish, could learn fast through watching other pitchers and just started to throw a new pitch type during the season easily, it was insane to increase the speed 8miles up to 100&101 in strikes by only one week. Even the Yankees closer who threw Shohei the 100 sinker couldn't make a strike for that speedy pitch. Yet Shohei in the next week had several sinkers at 99~101 inside the box with the batters watching at AB. Of course, Shohei Still needs more adjustments for the control of his new sinker. Shohei was basically able to throw sinkers in corners he wanted (though Shohei had to stop throwing it due to his blister). In next season, we will expect a magical show of sliders and sinkers. Well, Shohei might find a new toy pitching type then for more fun pitches combination.
Just ridiculous how he casually adds a sinker to his already insane arsenal
And such a good one too that thing is unhittable with his cutter/slider
Jesus approves
I would not be shocked if he mixed in pitching lefty.
Seriously. You don't just do that. Most pitchers have been throwing their stuff since college. He's built different
Reminds you of Darvish you just casually added a knuckle curve to his arsenal after a few pointers from Kimbrel when he was with the Cubs. Ohtani though looked like he just learned by watching. The same way a pianist learned to play a song by ear. That's some baseball genius there
4:10 McCormick’s reaction is like “damn, what exactly am I supposed to do against that pitch?”
Shohei's sinker looks like it speeds up about 2/3 of the way to the plate.
So he has 100mph 4 seam, 88 splitter, 70+ curve, 90 slider and now a 100 sinker?
Ohtani learns super fast. I still can't believe he outperforms almost all players with half amount of practice time.
Energy and time management is probably his greatest talent. He knows how to ramp it up during the clutch too, especially when pitching.
@Your Distracted it can’t be that hard, plus Ohtani has been doing this his entire life, he’s more than use to us by this point and probably puts in more work at pitching and hitting than most people put into their one position.
@Your Distracted he has like 130 innings pitched. He is a a full time pitcher man
@@salineaddict9850 if it’s so easy then why doesn’t everybody just go and be the best
@@salineaddict9850 it actually is that hard. That’s why no one has done what he’s doing in almost a century.
Ohtani's sinker was a strike, Holmes' was a ball. Ohtani is Neo
5:11 look how defeated the batter is lol
Ohtani reading signs looked like a little kid pitching for the first time lol, now add 6-pitch arsenal and a power hitting arm 🥲 My favorite part of the game though, was when he was intentionally walked despite having pitched 8 innings in the 9th - shows how much of a threat he is both in front and behind the plate.
pitcher got intentionally walked after he left the mound after 8 innings. What is that? I don't understand what that means lol
@@wilburwood8261 I believe he meant that Shohei after throwing more than 100 heaters is still a HR threat at the plate when most pitchers would be totally spent putting that much torque on their bodies.
@@wilburwood8261 Normally, pitchers aren’t seen as a threat when it comes to hitting - even less so after throwing 8 innings. They either don’t hit at all or even just strikeout to preserve energy. Yet, Ohtani was still seen as a threat despite having exerted so much effort already. The opposing team walked him instead of throwing and giving him the chance of getting a good hit.
@@sleepyheadz Of course I understand what is happening. I said, I don't understand, it is a way of being humorously sarcastic in a Japanese way!
@@wilburwood8261 I don't understand 🤣
he's just trying to make batters worry less while they are in the box, he's not lying, he's just being nice like shohei is always, how nice, except for when the batter strikes out on a 100mph sinker and has to walk back to the dugout
The Beatles expanded the possibilities of music to that extent because they absorbed the talents of legends and contemporaries and output them in their own interpretation. It shows that they were flexible and music lovers. Ohtani is exactly the same.
By the end of his career, Shohei's gonna have a 10 pitch arsenal and be hitting 50 dingers a year with an ERA below 2... this ain't even his final form.
Yeah. It's insane what his true potential could be. He absorbs things so quickly. Who the heck develops a 100 mph sinker late in the season after just seeing it the week before?! Clay Holmes' sinker to Ohtani was a ball; Ohtani's had such precision. Jeez! 🤯🤯🤯🤯
And still the Angels will find a way to lose.
@@themetadaemon Arte is gone. Maybe things can get better
@v the miner this didn't age well unfortunately 😊
That's a funny commentary on Ohtani adding a sinker to his arsenal but more so his facial expressions when reacting to the catcher's signals. He is really entertaining with his personality on the mound. He seems almost too playful at times, like last night when he was casually tossing the ball out of his glove to his bare hand like it was just an exhibition game to have fun with. Then he'll switch gears and be really intense throwing the next pitch. But have you taken notice of that Ohtani sneer? He brings out this Elvis sneer from time to time, which is part serious and part playful.
Ohtani, you STAND ALONE!
Sincerely,
Godsmack
thanks for adding that little TIME clip, i went to catch up on that short interview, it is so telling. the guy eats and breathes baseball, wants to leave a mark, and wants to win - last of which will be a big factor in the coming months. what legendary two seasons we get to watch already, but best of health to Shohei.
I haven't seen a slow mo of it but the way it behaves is a lot like a bullet spin pitch (gyroball.) The amount of sink is what you would expect from a ball with no excess lift or drag being generated and it is possible to throw such pitches at fastball velocity. They make for really deceptive sinkers if you can find a way to throw them effectively. At 100 mph, gravity (in a vacuum) would cause ~1.5 meters of drop from it's original trajectory which still ends up being quite a bit with atmospheric resistance added in.
I'd love to see a video about Brayan Bello, I think he has the makings of a star, and he's got one of the nastiest changeups I've seen.
Two-seam differs from a sinker.
Most Sinkers are Two Seamers. Not all Two Seamers are sinkers. Ohtani's Two Seamer sinks significantly & is a sinker.
Shohei with a sinker/splitter combo could be the worst thing in a while. I just can't get over how awesome the airbender is as a pitch. It's timing on when it breaks is art.
I love how you appreciate Shohei’s cuteness. He’s just too cute.
What do you think of the Ohtani sneer? He gives this little sneer that makes him look a lot like Elvis with the same mouth shape. It's half serious and half playful, but really fun to see him show personality like that.
@@surfwriter8461 I’m here for all of it. He’s a lot funnier than people know and it will show as he acclimates to life in the US. Did you see when he did the Vince McMahon strut in Detroit last year? After he hit his 40th while going 8 innings. Hilarious. I still think that was his signature game, even with all he’s done this year.
@@JurrasicPork I don't know McMahon's strut, but maybe you mean that funny strut Ohtani did in the dugout after returning from the HR and having the cowboy hat placed on his head--with his shoulders rotating in that exaggerated way as he walked and struck hands high with his teammates.
At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if he invents his own pitch. Like a curve-up, or a 6-seam backdoor SlideCut.
Ohtani originally is just ordinary right handed in both batting and pitching but Shohei's father who is a little league's manager told Shohei to shift to lefty because he believes it would help Shohei to have better balance, reduce tiredness, and lower the risk of injuries. So Shohei got to train himself to use left hand 😅 everything from daily life all of a sudden ( beginning with using chopsticks by left hand).
knuckle split
Shohei 🤯🤯🤯
Next is Changeup🤔
I’m hoping, I kind of want to see how Shohei s change up looks.
Perhaps a circle-changeup that can reach speeds in the mid 90s.
He started throwing sinker out of nowhere
Appreciate you. Thanks for the great content
Ohtani is insane
Love Shohei
Ohtani might bring back the extinct screwball next
Oh yeah! That would be awesome. He'd rack up the strikeouts for sure with that one! 🤯🤯🤯
Ohtani was activating his Sharingan
So he has the ability to absorb people’s skill now.
next year, he will hit HRs like Judge, and his ERA would be like Verlander
cuz he’s from Hunter x Hunter country.
I was thinking more like Peter Petrelli from Hero lol
4:42 Ohtani is pure gold 🤣
Didn't realize it yesterday.
Well you called it and predicted in "What Pitch shocked Shocked Ohtani?"
Maybe the key to Shohei's ability to still throw 100mph heaters in the 8th inning is in the little fact that he throws right handed while swinging left handed. Swinging the bat the other way may have help stretch the body to compensate for the ridiculous amount of pressure on the arms and torso.
I played a bit of ball in college as a pitcher and bats in the clean up spot. I threw right handed and batted lefty and it worked for me even though I didn't know how it did then.
He used to be swimmer too. That's known to help strengthen your shoulders and rotary cuff.
When I saw “PlayerName” I started cracking up
So here’s what I got for Ohtani so far:
4-Seam - 97-101mph
Cutter - 90-93mph
Slider - 88-90mph
Curveball - 74-81mph
Splitter - 90mph
2-Seam - 100mph?!!
Sheesh…
RIDICULOUS
It would be overkill if he added another pitch
@@Skye-tb7oq Surely knuckleball next
@@Skye-tb7oq I am new to baseball. What else can Ohtani add to his pitch? Knuckleball?
@@knifejail i dont think a knuckleball is that easy to learn though there isnt a lot of knuckleballers out in the league. A change-up maybe it'll make his fastball more deadlier
Jimmy herget is so underrated
i wish i could go angels stadium once at his finest
Next up: 100 mph power slider
I was starting to get a little nervous if there was going to be an upload today
Had to wait until I was done with my Peacock TV segment. Sorry for the delay!
No problem. As entertaining as always
4:22 Who said Shohei didn’t speak English?😜
Those who watch this video will probably go to heaven
The Astros came to ski, but it wasn't snowing.
ohtani throws 100 mph sinker
"not even my final form!"
Ohtani is not the best pitcher I have ever seen -- that would be Pedro. He is also not the best hitter I have ever seen -- no one has even come close to Bonds and his mastery of the strike zone, PED or not. But damn we might be watching the most talented baseball player the world has ever seen and we should not take it for granted. Watch him as much as we can, for all good things will come to an end. What a treat.
Ohtani is not the best hitter but he might be the best pitcher.
Ohtani is the most talented baseball player to ever walk on this planet. That's just insane.
Ohtani is MVP and don't even @ me with Judge... He can have the Hank Aaron award
Loves pitching ninja
Next pitch for Shohei: change up
I would love to see Ohtani matched up against deGrom or Max Scherzer. Even if he can't hit off them, he will learn a lot as a pitcher.
That’s kinda why I want him to be traded to the Mets hahah
@@metabreaker1185 I agree. What a treat to have a rotation with deGrom, Scherzer, and Ohtani. It makes sense that Ohtani would absorb pitching skills from them as teammates. However, I feel that Ohtani would benefit more from the experience as a pitcher if he faced them as a hitter. He would pitch with the mind of a hitter. But I too am looking forward to him joining the Mets lol.
@@noname-dk7ri quite possible both DeGrom and Scherzer leave the Mets before Ohtani joins the team though
If he gets traded to the Mets, he won't be a two-way player
@@noname-dk7ri I mean he could practice hitting off them, during practice if they were on the same team?
"Player name" got me 🤣🤣

Los Angeles Angels Needs To Get Shohei In The Infield As The Hitter At 1BASE
Just leaving a fat steaming comment in here!
Great content as always
Austin Voth doing well on the Orioles makes me so disappointed in the current pitching development staff on the Nationals.
Ohtani's has unbelievable skills. Taking advantage of looking at other pitche's pitches and using it.
Maybe a few weeks or so ago, Ohtani's pitching went a little off kilter, and some people who follow him closely said that Ohtani was doing something weird. My guess is that when Ohtani is off his game, that is when he is trying something. So I wouldn't worry about him being out of shape at times. He is still in the process of trying and will continue to evolve.
how many 0 ER or 1ER quality starts pitching 6, 7 , 8 innings can he get with loss or no win? damn Angels.
4:59 Player Name is elite. Went to high school with him. Dont be fooled by taht hanging changeup because he can hum the ball. What was even cooler is his cousin is Joe Random who is a top prospect
$600M man coming to a ball park near you.
Shohei is living proof that there’s always an asian out there who’s better than you
christian javier, dylan cease, spencer strider, framber, nestor have become some of my favorites this year.
i forgot about ohtani add that to my list lol.
That 100mph sinker actually looked like it sped up at the end from this camera angle. crazy
4:08 is when he shows the sinker.
Ohtani has a sharingan 😆
He held the Blue Jays and Astros to 1 ER combined. It's not hard to figure out why. Hitters must have a fit trying to figure out what Shohei is going to throw. Will it be a 100mph fastball? a 92mph sudden-drop splitter? an 89mph frisbee slider? or the new 100mph sinker (AKA super fast curveball)? 🤣 And all 4 of those pitches come from the same arm slot. And if the really wants to confuse you he can float you a 70 mph curveball
I Will Like To See Shohei Ohtani To Become a 1Baseman With The Angels
Judge have to hit 74 home runs to beat this guy.
and bat 400.
Only 1 thing to say, MVP SHOTIME!!!!
Love the two seam add from Shohei. I’d also like to see him add a change up. I think adding that against lefties would complement his back door slider really well
i dont see him adding a change up because its very similar to what a splitter does and he already has an elite splitter
He has a splitter right? Isn’t that essentially a way to throw a change-up?
@@Brixenja he loves to mess around with grips so I don’t see how trying a change up would hurt. His splitter moves down. A change grip would dart away and down from a lefty so it would be similar but with different movement
A changeup would also be a good alternative to the splitter if it isn't working that day
Very true man it would be devastating if he had a good change up too. Hot dayum.
I copied this quote with permission in regards to AL MVP:
Judge is chasing history while Shohei Ohtani is making history.
So yeah Shohei for 2022 MVP!!
Good afternoon
Yankees pitchers are using sinkers at a league high rate. Ohtani just learned the sinker. Ohtani to the Yankees confirmed.
He just downloads pitches like the Matrix. 😂
Shohei is not Ohtani,so he didn't know that Shohei can pitch the 2 seem
Where was Patrick Corbin on the show. I really thought he was gonna be mentioned after his really good performance last night against the Mets
Meanwhile, Ohtani's signature splitfinger no longer has the same impact as it once did. Why is that?
It's still his out pitch but I think he's thinking more about staying healthy and a splitter is hard on the arm.
Yep. I agree. He probably doesn’t use it as much no more because of the wear and tear on the arm and also the pitch being so predictable landing out of the strike zone. Ohtani seems like a smart guy so he decided to adjust.
Probably see it again as a finish move if he makes it to the world series. He's probably trying to perfect it more lol.
You mean the 2023 series?
@@khh8776 Only time will tell. He will probably be on a different team before that happens.
Ohtani is an anime protagonist, I’ve stopped being surprised when he gets more powerful
He reminds me of Ging from "Hunter × Hunter", whose genius allows him to master any special attack he got.
Correction: Ohtani is an anime protagonist, AFTER multiple reboots, half a dozen movies, and a few OVA's worth of buffs. Everyone is playing Baseball, Ohtani is playing Baseball Z: Super Kai 13 or some shit.
Me a casual fan.....uuummm every pitch is the same damn thing. 😂
San Diego Studios seeing this thinking: its time to drop a 99 Othani with his Sinker
Possibly everyone: 😳😳😳
Nothing players don’t affects us fans and I’m tired of people who care enough
61 HR is only an AL record right? thats way behind what Ohtani is doing. I would say judge MVP if he breaks the MLB record.
oh, Ohtani already broke tons of MLB record this year.
he is a valuable player not only for the team but also for the MLB.
Judge is doing someone did. Ohtani is doing no one did.

4:41 Hitter trying to go oppo and he throws this???
what about hanser alberto’s strikeout
His ability to adapt is his greatest talent. I don’t know if people remember how terrible his first spring training was when he arrived. His teammates with Nippon Ham said the same thing about his ability to make adjustments on the fly. He noticed the leg kick was too slow, so he changed it to a slight toe tap. He noticed that his slider wasn’t as effective on days he couldn’t fully control his split, so he added a 2 seamer/sinker. Absolutely amazing. I can’t wait for next season when he has time to practice with his new pitch in the off-season and maybe ends up on a contending team later in the season.
When he’s on, he’s right there with Degrom and Sandy imo
Agreed. he struggled with a curveball in spring training that he had probably never seen before, but his first home run was off a curveball I think lol. When pitchers found out Ohtani was bad at curveballs, they showed him a lot of them and he overcame the curveball lol.
@@noname-dk7ri Yup, I just hope he can continue this run for another 5 or so years and make a few post season runs. Also, it’ll be interesting to see if he keeps improving. I wouldn’t be surprised if he improves his plate discipline and has a higher OBP or improves his control over his pitches next season and minimizes bad starts like he had against the Yankees or Braves. There’s nothing more fun and exciting then when Ohtani is pitching and hitting at the highest level.
I've read comments if shohei is trying to complete his changeup .. hopefully we can see it soon
I watched Ohtani's game when he pitched in Toronto and noticed that he signaled 2-seam/sinker while he was warming up. I thought "Did Shohei have a 2-seam or sinker?" Sure enough he threw sinkers this start against the Astro's and the first time I saw it I was like "Bro that thing ran a lot." Then when the slow-mo replay played I saw that the spin of the ball was not a four-seam, but a two-seam kind of spin. Blew my mind knowing he said he didn't throw a sinker just recently then just casually throws a 100 mph sinker.
That's the added dimension to Ohtani's talent and personality mix--constantly trying to add, perfect and learn with his performance as a pitcher. It's like an artist adding new materials and imagery to their work. Now I want to see if he can do something similar with his hitting, which has been a bit weaker this year--inconsistent and as if he's lost at times. He's still putting up very good numbers but not looking as strong as a hitter this year.
@@surfwriter8461 I agree. He's not as good this season in hitting compared to last season, but his pitching this season is insane IMO.
Not one of these pitchers are human, but Ohtani is just plain out of this world. Where will he end up. Chatter says Cubs. That would be wrong. Hope it's St. Louis.
real ones saw codify and ninja call this pitch a day before it happened all on twitter

Im going to Srtippling (dealing right now) and Clevinger against LAD.
There are only so many pitch buttons on a controller. Just saying.
That’s my least favorite part of MLB the show. I want to be able to throw 11 different pitches. I usually only use my 4 seam fastball and slider though.
Ohtani is android 17..
Angels need to order android 18, they work well together..😁
3:52 🤔
I'm not very clear why Ohtani says he throws 2-seamer, but mlb official records it as sinker, what's the real difference of these 2 types?
They can be synonymous. Most sinkers are thrown with a 2-seam grip.
