I'm envious of those cloves and raised garlic beds:)

Thank you for saying that. When we first started our best was way smaller! We sorted hard this planting, hoping to keep moving up avg size. Tiller makes the beds like this, I like it too!

@@familyfarmlivestock4949 I organic grow as well but mine are a bit smaller yet. Like you I am working my way up to larger cloves. This year I prepared the bed with leaves and cattle manure compost but I think the trick is how you grow your garlic in nutrient dense soil. Will seed the soil with something, if the weeds don't come up that is:)
For those raised beds I will watch Jason more closely to see how he prepares them. Our soil is fine clay and takes two months to warm up in the months of April and May to mid June for some veggies. I'm thinking of trying raised beds that would warm up faster to help get a bit earlier start, if the weather co-operates that is.

@@tallcedars2310 This is the best ground we have, sits level and drains well. Other fertile spots tend to sit wet, a big no-no for garlic! And the raised beds are all from the tiller then not walking over the bed once tilled. This part (not walking on the bed) is a bit of a pain, but works. Seems to keep it nice for bulbs to expand and really nice to plant in. Before we had the tiller, we would plow then disc, okay but not always nice as we would like, tiller is a for sure, as long as the soil is dry!

@@familyfarmlivestock4949 Is your tiller also from Tilsen Tractor Supplies? I'm going to look at one for our tractor as I am getting too old to weild a hand tiller.

@@tallcedars2310 It's a John Deere pro/contractors tiller, we bought it used. It's a beast, great to use. Weird ball shape on pto takes a bit of a knack to hook it up to tractor, but once on it's super

Hi Cathy. could you please tell me the name of that garlic you grow. I tried to grow some last year for personal use here in our corn farm in Iowa zone 5, but nothing grow. Seeing your videos I want to try again, but would like to grow the same variety that you grow since you are in zone 5 too, I guess I will have a better chance to grow them here. Thanks and blessings.

It's a hardneck that I bought at a local produce auction that we planted. We keep the best each year and bulb size has gone up quite a bit. Hit up a local produce auction and buy what looks good. Double check for hard white stems and good layers on the bulb. The better stuff you plant, the better garlic you'll get.
