When Carl Edwards Made NASCAR’s First Video Game Move

- Before Ross Chastain’s “video game move” with the now famous Hail Melon at Martinsville it was Carl Edwards who accomplished such a feat. In the 2008 fall Kansas race he and Jimmie Johnson were in a tight hunt for the 2008 championship, and the winner of this race would lead the other in the points with only 7 races remaining in the campaign. With it we saw Edwards put up a move of both pure desperation and pure badass craziness that NASCAR is so readily known for. This is the time when Carl Edwards made NASCAR's first video game move.

Carl Edwards walked so Ross Chastain could wall ride.
😂😂😂
Right on lol.
😂
This comment is perfect. Well done, good sir
Edwards would also adjust his jaw if he was still in the series and wrecked him
Congrats Carl on being named one of the 75 greatest NASCAR drivers of all time!
Somewhere in Florida, Young Ross Chastain probably said "One day, I'm gonna try that out, but not dive inside, and stay against the wall at full speed"
I vividly remember having a literal panic attack watching these last few laps. When Edwards pulled the video game move, a rush of emotions came pouring in, from shock, to heartbreak, to surprise, to happiness in a matter of seconds.
I was visiting my religious parents house where you do NOT swear. I was watching the race in the spare room/office, and my dad came in (he's doesn't watch Nascar, but he just started hanging out). While completely stressed the last few laps, I was finally feeling kind of safe in that final lap. I had turned to reply to my dad about something and as I turned back Carl made that move. I almost shouted "WHAT THE FUCK??" but barely caught myself. Thankfully, JJ and I both made it through unscathed that day.
I would of loved too hear Johnsons comment on his radio as he watched this unfolding in front of him 😊
Watching Carl do that live was so awesome
Yep I watched him do that live too it was incredible.
I watched this race on the NASCAR CZcams channel earlier. I needed some Kansas nostalgia. One of many underrated races in 2008.
This race wasn't that underrated. Also the 2008 Daytona 500 was pretty good.
Yeah
Back then the discussion was “you couldn’t have done that with the old Gen 4 car. The COT is so much more rigid and didn’t crumble when he hit the wall.” Now we’ve taken that 5x with the NextGen car which is even more rigid and is the main reason Ross’s move worked without totally demolishing the car.
Carl Edwards is a Legend
This would cement Carl Edwards as one of the 75 Greatest Drivers Ever, even if he wasn’t a great driver, which he was 20 times over.
You don't win 28 races, nearly win the championship two times and not be considered a great racer. If anything he's 2nd to Mark Martin in terms of the greatest to not win a championship.
@@RazgrizWing *3rd, Denny Hamlin and Mark Martin are ahead of him in my opinion
You should do a underrated races series narrated races like these are when covered well is always enjoyable,
Cousin Carl will always be my favorite driver 💪
He was one of my favorites too, I wish he won a championship, preferably take away one of Jimmie Johnson's cups.
@@polycube868I mean, if it was the old Winston Cup formula the whole time, he'd have 3 titles, taking away Jimmie's from 2008 and 2017.
Carl's interview after that move was awesome!
I miss having Carl Edwards being around racing. I could be wrong, but I felt like he was extremely unappreciated as a driver until he left the sport.
Carl was so much fun to watch. What an awesome talent
Yep fun to watch fun to listen to his comments he was the complete package.
I honestly thought Carl was trying to send it on the inside to pass Jimmie. Never saw it as him trying to wall ride it.
Yeah me too.
Such a shame this guy never won a cup series tittle, he was one heck of a driver.
The OG "SLIDE JAWB!!!"
I miss Carl Edwards days!!
I hear ya
If he won't make a comeback in Cup I'd at least like to see him in a Truck race or in SRX, or even as a guest in the FOX booth.
What is your favorite crazy NASCAR move?
Nothing will compare to the Hail Melon, I say!
Probably Ross's wallride because it was just so unexpected at least for me
Probably Chastain’s COTA win move. It was awesome since it was my first ever race and I got that great of a finish to the race and plus, my favorite band Midland played a pre race concert. I had a fantastic time there.
The Kyle and Kyle show slide job at Chicagoland speedway.
Ross Chastain’s move at Martinsville
I honestly wish it worked. The two races after that failed video game move were the ones that costed him the championship
11:28 nice
Now that I look back at it, 2008 was a great season.
It was decent but not better than 2011 or 2012.
@@runrafarunthebestintheworld to me, 08 was better than 12.
@@robertgwynn746612 was so exciting and different Watkins glen finish, brad K handedly defeating Johnson, bowyer & kahne being in the mix, Talladega finish, both Busch brothers slump, jr returning to form a bit element of surprise was nice it was unique, racing was solid/decent to end of the COT was just better than than the wing era in almost every conceivable way
This was the first race I ever attended, watching this video brings back a lot of fun memories from that day.
Another great video!!! Any chance you could one day do a video on how DW started as great broadcaster and ended on such a low point??? Would love to see it! Also the what ifs because I'm not positive but I think I read somewhere Dale Earnhardt Sr was going to join DW in the booth as soon as he retired from racing. That would have been a dream team in the booth!!! Thank you for all the great uploads
I remember this race as well
he’s in the wall!
This was my first thought after the Briscoe Bristol dirt move
love my home track kansas best track on circuit sadly wont be there this year
He almost pulled it off, lmao!
I remember that .. had insane momentum
I miss Carl 😢
Finally. Chastain didn’t invent it he was the first to make it work
Noah gragson tried it too at Iowa 2017 I believe
2018 Chicagoland...if you haven't done that already
Pure talent and skill
Edwards>Jimmie
Luck and equipment
Jimmie>Edwards
Carl video. W
Where will be at Kansas? I wanna meet you!
They banned that move this so he can't do it again
Carl Edwards walked so that Ross Chastain could fly and wreck a lapped car
Shelldon creed tryed to do the same thing
I really wished Carl’s move worked.
Edwards I think knew his move wasn't going to work, Chastain really thought he could do it, and did.... In impressive fashion!!!🎉
Bunk nas beat sample
Harvick passed Johnson high and won in California on a ridiculous last lap pass, where’s that video?
I really wonder if he wouldn’t have sent it as low would he of actually won it. Because you can see his splitter hit the apron and shoot him straight up. If that doesn’t happen yea he hits the wall but I feel he hits it with the back end and does he have enough momentum to win
vidya games™
Carl was HIM
Weird that Tony couldn't recover from the slide through the grass. Didn't look all too bad. Like I know the splitter dug into the grass but it didn't look TOO bad
Yeah the splitter held up pretty well too.
He had poor handling all weekend. And his qualifying position was 44th if I remember. Not even 43rd.
Honestly it looks like Carl was trying to do slide job before it was named. But because he overdid it he just drove the wall to keep momentum in front of Jimmie. But fell just short of winning.
After Eric cartman wreck him in the pits. He decided to flip off the rules himself.
Kansas is usually boring so I was glad Carl actually tried to make Kansas entertaining
Well Kansas got better with the Gen 7 670hp package after a few years of the failed 550hp package.
@@Tylnorton If they had even more HP Kansas would be a lot better. I hope the race tomorrow is good though.
