Disappointing Kim is heart-wrenching, but the part that really does it for me is Volition's reaction to you accepting that you're an irretrievable human catastrophe. Volition, who the whole game is trying to get you to face reality and do what is right for you, who is always level headed and unemotive, is absolutely floored that you don't even feel the need to change at all. That is true horror, your own self finally giving up on you and accepting that you don't even want to be better.

I confess, I put loads of points into volition, not because I need more Morale points, but because Harry desperately needs a voice in his head telling him not to kill himself.
I had my Harry be better for himself. Relying on Kim was stupid when he was plainly killing himself with the drinking. On top of that, Kin is far too uptight.

This implies he doesn't actually mind Harry ignoring his rank and calling him by his name, as long as Harry shows respect towards him, the RCM and the case they're working on, but if Harry is an asshole towards Kim he takes note of the disrespect
Just realized that Claire (the union boss) is pretty much the only character who calls you Harry - and you can alos take that however you want: at one hand it's a power move and clearly meant to mock the questionable authority of the RCM, but on the other hand: the fact that it's literally the first time in the game someone is calling you by your name is also disarming - he's only character shrewd enough to understand that someone high up at the RCM is trying to fuck you by putting you on that case with only Kim as backup; and even though he's exploiting that weakness - he acknowledges the human cost of the political games that you're caught in between.
@@n0xure Kim will call you by Harry occasionally, usually it's out of concern though. More personal and empathetic like after you get shot (i think its if you have a high trust stat with him)

He also said that hes okay with being called kim because its short and convenient. I guess it just depends on your relationship with him or choices you make
It seems like he's fine with people he trusts and likes calling him Kim, but it's insulting when someone he dislikes doing it, as he sees it as them looking down on him and not acknowledging all his efforts
@@jzenhenko I didn't even know it was possible to call him Lieutenant instead of just Kim, in fact I always wondered why it felt weird to choose "Kim" options and it's because he doesn't call you "Harry" or "Raphael"
there are so many parts of Disco Elysium I will never see. I never want to go through this. I never want to read this conversation. I never want to be in this situation. In a game where choices matter, usually it's fun to see where all of the choices lead, but not here. not this game. Some choices go places that hurt my own spirit so much, that I would never feel comfortable playing a game like that.
So other people think like that too...
For me that's the one of the strongest points the game makes, such is life, most of the time you don't know what choices will lead you to hurting situations, and even if you do, sometimes you don't have any other option, sometimes we fuck up good, hell sometimes we don't even get that we fucked up in the moment or we are unable to accept it, disco elysium for me is about failing, and hurting, but must importantly, it is about surviving, living with the consequences of you actions, learning what you can and standing up in the face of literal monsters. The pale, the love of your life leaving you, even the case itself are all adversities outside of our understanding and it can feel like there's no hope, there's nothing you can do to stop these monsters from eating you piece by piece, except there is, you solve the case didn't you? Maybe if you push on you'll be able to defeat more of the monsters, and that ressonated with me a lot, but that's just my interpretation
I'd take actual moral damage if I went down this route.
Apparently if you say you see him as “a true *Vacholiere*”, he’ll really appreciate it as “no one has ever said that to (him) before.”
So just in case you fail the dance check, you can still make it something really touching.

The thing that hurts the most about this scene is that no one else in the room responds. No one calls him out, the music doesn't stop, no one even stops dancing. Nobody else in the room gives a shit.
Oh, my bad, at first I thought it said “you might be imagining it, but it feels like Egg Head turned down the volume down. Such is his respect.” after Kim walked out, but it’s because Harry stopped dancing. 😢 ahhhh that’s so sad!!!! I thought Egg ahead noticed at first, but no one does anything 😖

Man upsetting Kim is like THE WORST thing. I would have save scummed if I ever failed this I don't even care. Like I feel sick just watching this.
I failed this check randomly, my authority stat was really high - and I was horrified by needing to call Kim a monkey fucker, so I reloaded and replayed HALF AN HOUR and then save-scummed until I won the dance check. Goddamn, sir, I can fail a lotta things but Kim deserves every ounce of my love and respect, and I will not have it otherwise
Being able to call him a true Revacholier somewhat makes up for it.
Honestly as an Asian-American person I love this scene. Kim acts and says exactly what I wanted too every time someone was racist to me but I was too shocked to say.

It goes back to the 1700s but was popularized in the 19th century as the term "yellow peril" because a common way to refer to the perceived threat that Asian influence had on Western (American, British, European) lifestyles. The term is extremely racist and is based on skin colour.
"Monkey" or "monkey man" is also a common racial slur, often for black people, but also used for just about any non-white ethnic group. It comes from the belief that non-white ethnic groups are somehow "less evolved" or more "primal" than white people.
I did my best to explain this tactfully and accurately, but I am white and this is not my area of expertise, so if anyone reading this has any corrections or additions please let me know.

Oh noooo. Jeez, failing that authority dice roll has one of the most punishing consequences I've seen in the game. It feels so terrible when you *have* to say terrible shit because you failed a skill check, but that also makes this experience very real.

I think it's good writing that if you fail the check, there's no way to back out of calling Kim the slur. Even if you've been making all the "right" choices with Harry and playing him as someone trying to get better, the fact that he has the capacity to blurt out a slur without thinking says a lot about who he was before losing his memory (and still has the potential to be)

Kim is so god-damned Lawful Neutral that you can call him a racial slur, prompting an emotional response born out of years of prejudicial trauma, double down on it, and he STILL sticks with the investigation. This scene was fucking fantastic. I literally covered my mouth in he real world when I realized what I made Tequila Sunset say. I got caught up in making Kim dance, so used to finger guns working I didn't even realize I called him a 'yellow monkey fucker.' My regret going into the apology was genuine

It was interesting to hear Kim getting angry. I didn't realise calling him by his name came across as disrespectful either. His voice actor does a great job of sounding angry, I really felt this!
I only wish the devs let Harry get punched out if you push it too far. Kim folds you flat, you wake up, he's gone, he reappears the next day, refuses to even speak about what happened.
That's the thing, isn't it? For one, it shows Kim's strength and fortitude to not do that - but for another, Kim knows that in their society he can't get away with something like that the way Harry can because of what he looks like. He's built up that massive restraint and force-of-will to make it so people *have* to take him seriously (it's telling that the Brow-Off shows that Kim's Authority is absolutely off the charts). Kim and Harry are great foils - they're only one year apart in age, both born Revacholians, both in the police force for twenty years (Harry has actually only been there for 18 years), but the way they've been treated in their world is very different.
Even beyond the racist comments he gets from other characters in Martinaise, it's telling that Kim is as clever as you, and *considerably* more competent, and yet despite Past-Harry's constant drinking and crazy-difficulty-to-work-with, Harry's still been been offered two more promotions than Kim has over the same amount of time (to be a lieutenant double-yefritor instead of a lieutenant). If Kim lost his cool and hit Harry, it'd be blamed on him.
@@fluffyravens3758 In Harry's defense of his rank, though I have no doubt Revacholian's and the RCM treat Kim differently. It's stated in the game that Harry started working himself to death after the break up, taking roughly two cases a week! which has lead to his whopping 216 cases solved with only room for one more open case in his ledger. He got his rank cause of his eccentric superstar cop persona and unorthodox approach to interrogation I.e." the can opener". plus Kim was a junior cop for thirteen year technically which in my opinion is where the real prejudice was, seeing how clever and competent he was!

Damn. I felt bad enough when I failed a skill check with the gardener and just randomly pointed out that she was black, which she brings up later (this was early in my first playthrough and I didn't understand the system fully so I hadn't even thought to save so I could try again), but this... I would take losing hours of progress from not saving over going forward with that. Kim's disappointment hurts so much.
I am so grateful that I never even encountered this scenario. It would literally be the only time where "If you die in the game, you die in real life (on the inside)" wasn't just a meme, it would have been real.
Well, I'm a half asian in a culture that has racism pretty normalized, and I have to listen slurs almost on daily basis. They aren't that hurtful at all, to an adult person at least, but just as game said - it's like a broken record, heard one time too many. Feeling of alienation despite being diffirent in a look only is real. And his feelings and opinions are so on point. Hopefully it will make at least some people who play this game think about that stuff.
It's not so much that it's outright offensive, but more so that it's just tiring to hear.

I couldn't go through with the failed skill check. Didn't even have the courage to leave the church, reloaded a quick save almost immediately...
I love how he doesn't sound angry. He sounds hurt. Maybe this was the final straw, or maybe it was a devastating betrayal, but he wasn't prepared for it either way.

This is one of the most painful things I've seen in a video game. Kim is the best of the best, no matter what happened in my playthrough I knew he had my back so I was true to him. I cannot express how happy I am that I passed this skill check, this would have been the only failed check I would have save scummed.

I did it and I quit halfway because, while this is the worst interaction, there are so many micro aggressions and casual disrespectful things you can say to Kim. It made me realise that when Kim is quiet or sounds dismissive towards you in a normal run, it is nothing compared to the cold silence when he gives up on you (My first run was also a hyper empathy autistic goober kind of run- kind of rp'd myself- so the difference was soooooo jarring. Going from Kim being pleasantly surprised that you care about his feelings to the resignation that he's in another awful situation with a fellow officer, yet again.).
Thank you for doing this for all of us. I would never be able to go down this route, it genuinely hurts so much to make Kim dissapointed.
I love this one because you not only dissappoint Kim, but Volition as well. That "That's it? You don't even want to change?" is so powerful. Volition is one of the only aspects of yourself that are actively trying to cheer you up and make you a better person, and cop despite the situation. And yet there it is, absolutely disappointed at your own incompetence.
I must mention. This moment is one of the best representations of the human condition. You are there. In the moment. Everything is going right. Everyone there is on your side. Taking vibe notes from you. And then... then you misread it for one moment. And call, Lieutenant Kim, the one who has, against his better judgement, backed you up through it all, a slur.
Everything in your mind then turns 93 degrees. Nothing can bring back the vibe, nothing can take back the words, which you threw in a fit of blinding energy, nothing can win back the Lieutenant.
As if you learned nothing, and are just coasting through it all, thinking you are invincible.
These seemingly simple moments, with no bearing on the important events form and shape the entire future of the relationship.
Always keep your vibe in check.

In my first playthrough, I never rolled back the progress except for this scene when I failed the Authority check. It was terrible and I did not want to continue, ended up not seeing Kim’s dance moves! Now looking for his dance moves and alternative scenes in CZcams. Thanks for uploading this.

It was... Such a painful and hard process, to finish watching this video. My curiosity and eagerness to find out more about the universe I'm so fatally in love with fought to death with all saint and humane that is in me... My heart just started bleeding.
Wow now I am so proud of myself choosing the lieutenant option after the pinball task. Kim didn't give a clear response to that, but he did hint it here and there.
It's interesting that Kim calls you "detective" at the end -- based on that one Esprit de Corps check, it feels like "officer" would have fit better. Though I guess at this point *both* serve the same purpose, huh?

But Harry has always called Kim by Kim. Sure if you play a friendly character then at the very least he will shake it off, but that got me.

This made me not want to finish the game. I wanted Kim to dance so I thought sure I'll do that. Then he just calls him a slur, and I'm like well this is not a very fair consequence.

I had heard that you could call Kim a slur if you messed up, one of the few spoilers I was grateful for to know I needed to save in advance just in case. It's been a while since I played and I've been curious bc this scene is infamous, but I couldn't even bring myself to look it up or watch it proper until now. It's way worse than I thought. I'm thankful you picked the kindest and the worst options, both, because I would never have the heart to do this myself :( Thank you for taking one for the team

I was just clicking to remember the covo and I accidently clicked that and had to reload my save when he left I felt like a POS
