Phrenic Nerve Surgery for Diaphragm Paralysis: Greg's Story

  • Greg, a resident of Toronto, Canada, had breathing issues for years before he was properly diagnosed with diaphragm paralysis. There weren’t any treatments available in Canada for his condition. However, his doctor had heard about a life-changing procedure pioneered by Dr. Matthew Kaufman based out of Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, NJ. The procedure corrects function of the diaphragm muscle. Gregory underwent the procedure in 2017 and felt better immediately, but after a few years, his symptoms returned. Dr. Kaufman advised he was experiencing a rare occasion of relapse and suggested a revision phrenic nerve procedure.
