It's funny, the story of Bag man is most famous in Latin America, known as "the bag man", "sack man", "Old man with a bag", it was told to children, about a man who walked the streets and captured disobedient children. The story is so old, mid 1910(Francisco Leona Romero killed, captured the child in a bag and took her life) this story inspired several characters, such as the Bogeyman, PennyWise among others, but apparently in the USA it is not as well known because there are several mocking comments, thinking that it is a copy of already established characters, but it is the opposite.
the boogeyman's story has existed since like the 1500s. Not sure what you're talking about, all cultures have their own "boogeyman", the concept is as old as hell. Also, Pennywise's best reference was John Wayne Gacy
Yeah cultures really have had similar stories going back hundreds maybe almost thousands of years. Native Americans eastern Europeans Asian cultures and more all have some form of evil entity that comes and takes children akin to the boogeyman like the other said. And they do have a bag or sack in some instances. There's even Krampus. So definitely older than 1900.
in spain the bagman was real. not monsters or magical beings, a common person. a man, Francisco, had tuberculosis so he asked a couple for a cure. not everyone has access to today's medical knowledge, so the couple told him that he had to find a kind and drink its blood. Francisco asked for the help of the girlfriend's cousin, Julio, who kidnaps a seven year old. they cut the kids armpit, so Francisco could drink his blood, then they bashed the kid's head with a rock, so they could get the kid's fat and rub it all over Francisco's body. of course, this didnt work. Francisco and the couple were executed, but Julio was pardoned and diagnosed with Insanity. there are also a lot of european stories about boogeymen, because there were a lot of people that could kidnap children, so there isnt juts one version of the Bag Man, but this one is the closest to reality.
