    This was 10 years ago and you can see how ignorant they are about mental health and the effects of antipsychotic medication. It can definitely cause slurred speech. Their concerns felt condescending & demeaning. It's disgusting. They would have also spoken to her before they had her on the couch. If they truly cared for her they would have pulled the interview... itv really are despicable.

      They said she was late in so there was no time to speak to her before. She said herself in an interview when she returned that Phil was right to ask her about her speech and if she is okay.

    • @taniar523
      @taniar523 Před rokem

      @@spikeyroberto Yes, of course he should have asked her if she was ok. That's just basic courtesy. It's so interesting that lack of time means just put them on air and not take the time to check if they are ok. Make no mistake, itv loved this & maybe in the long run she did too. No matter what I can guarantee they did not care one iota about her mental health. This was an absolute rating's score for itv and that's why they had her on multiple times.

      @@spikeyrobertoThat is crap that it was because she arrived late. She appeared hyper as they did the opening segment to Camera. They could have pulled her off immediately then at that point. They chose not to because they wanted to humiliate and embarrass her.

    I know Kerry has had her issues with drugs and drink but there is nothing worse than being accused of being 'on something' or drunk when you aren't. I am a type one diabetic and need at least five insulin injections a day (slow acting first and last thing in my day, quick-acting before meals or when necessary.) and I have had many times when my blood sugar has gone bonkers and people assume I am on something or drunk as a skunk. One recent occasion that sums it up- a couple of months ago, mid-morning I was slumped in my local high street, shaking and in tears, trying to get somebody to help me get a sugary drink for about 45 minutes (my glucose was incredibly low and I am generally a 'high runner'. I felt hideous and couldn't even stand properly). People kept walking past and tutting, commenting, (one woman even said to a child they were with who approached me- "Don't go near her. She might be dirty!") until eventually an understanding father and his daughter- who was about eight and also diabetic shared her jelly baby sweeties with me and they sat and chatted until I could stroll off. I wished I could tell these people how unaware they were but I was a wobbly mess. The funny thing is that am a drugs/ mental health worker myself. People attitudes towards addicts and people suffering with mental health issues are so unhelpful so often. The two do come together a lot but not always and the ignorant mix the two up. My way of looking at people is that you don't know anybodies circumstances unless they tell you, so don't assume. And even when you do- don't judge. There but for the Grace of God etc. Just try and be kind to other people, the world is bad enough as it s.

    You try going on anti-psychotics and see how you feel when like the 3% of people on them, you get the most intense side effects of any psychiatric medication, that can include slurred speech. Most people acting crazy in public are not on illicit substances, they have a mental disorder, and pretending they're all on illicit substances is just a way of blaming the victim so you don't have the inconvenience of having to have compassion for them.

I still think Philip and Fearne (who I used to like) were really condescending and their concern was so insincere. Then fearne quoting out of a magazine like it’s the holy grail, was nauseating. Sure those magazines are notorious for exaggerating. They clearly wanted to use Kerry to boost their ratings by making matters worse for Kerry. Anyone knows either on a personal level or in the psychiatric and care sector or all of the above that like any other mental health issue that the side effects from prescribed drugs that counteract bipolar disorder is that of slurred speech! I can completely understand how upsetting it was for Kerry Katona to appear on daytime national television to be queried in the manner in which she was. Sadly at the time after watching the interview with Kerry many of us would be extremely concerned and worried for her own wellbeing and happiness at first glance and even a tad less so if they already fully understood the side effects of the medication that Kerry was being prescribed aswell as her diagnosis purely on it's own. Am sure looking back on it now, Philip would hopefully agree that what was harsh and perhaps even upsetting comment to make at the time towards any notion that "Kerry was taken some powder" but we know Philip was merely highlighting what many of the viewers may have been wondering at the time. Looking back on this interview now even Kerry herself didn't recognise herself but she shouldn't feel as embarrassed as much she now feels about this interview as she to her true credit has inadvertently highlighted a stigma in society which sadly still exists even to this day. Kerry is such a bubbly, empathetic, successful and positive larger that life woman that brings a smile to us all but like the rest of us Kerry is not immune to whatever life has to throw at us! Kerry has came a long way through the struggles in her personal life after the violent relationship she was in, rehab aswell as how this has impacted her relationship with her Mum aswell as coping with her children sadly which she has now maintained a deeply improved close and transparent bond with. But at the end of the day, no matter what life has to throw at us, like all of us, none of us are perfect but how Kerry has coped and handled herself when one knows the bigger picture is nothing short of incredible! Kerry is a genuine lass who is a real party pooper who enjoys living life to the full and is a true survivor despite of everything that has happened in her past! No wonder why we all love her for it and even more so because it's Kerry!

I mean no offence to anyone with a mental health issue, but it seems that sometimes society, and in paticular the media use mental illness as an excuse for destructive behaviour. I know that certain mental illnesses effect your cognitive function but at the end of the day a mental health disorder does not affect your morals. You see lots of people comitting crimes and then getting involved in situations which they know are wrong and then say "Well I'm sorry but I had a mental health issues" Things don't work like that, if you do something wrong them you have to take responsibility for it, no matter how ill you are. If Kerry's slurring was actually from her medication...why did she say "I was fine yesterday this is from me taking my meds late at night 11:30". Which doesn't make sense as IF it is genuinely the result of her prescribed meds; she'd be slurring on a regular basis. Celebs like to have the public's attention and applause when it suits them but become very defensive when they've been caught being naughty. Then they scream defiantly; 'how dare you'!!!!!

      not necessarily with this medication, you have to sleep off the effects. I have days where I'm up early I'm a hell of a lot more drowsy, drooling and slurred speech, which is most embarrassing and gets to you. if I sleep in, I don't have those effects. what happens is the anti psychotics act as sedatives, hence why taken at night, if you sleep off the sedation you're okay, if you don't, you're still semi sedated. then you get the effects of slurred speech, drooling, head nodding, kidding off etc etc. that's why it affects sometimes and not others

    Wow, Isn’t it just lovely how Philip immediately tried to blame her husband for allowing her on to the show when he was getting flack for how he spoke to her. He tried to pin everything on to an innocent party and say that as her husband he shouldn’t have allowed her to go in front of the camera as he would have known her condition when Philip and the other staff try to say that they didn’t know she was slurring because she turned up late. It was however good to see the other presenter (sorry, I don’t know her name) try to stick up for her saying that she was bright eyed, switched on and answered the questions well, which implied that she hadn’t been drinking because she wouldn’t have been able to respond like this if she had. Poor Kerry was treated so badly and there was absolutely no need for it. After she confirmed that she hadn’t been drinking he shouldn’t have carried on questioning her but instead use that as an opportunity to ask her about her mental illness, the treatment and how it affects her. That would have made a great interview and educated people on how medications can impair people and the impact of living with a severe mental health issues. All Philip did was put her in to a deeper depression for the next few years as I recently heard her state in an interview that this messed her up for many years after and even 10 years on it’s still having a very negative impact on her mental health and career.
    Kerry we all love you for just being you, so open, so honest and for being someone who can speak up for themselves and also for other people who are going through similar problems. Mental illness was such a taboo subject back then so this interview could have been iconic for so many positive reasons rather than the negative ones that it is now know for being. Xx

    And take medication for this.
    Too be questioned by an interviewer in a way that is accusatory while they do not know what Bipolar is.

    Since all of the stuff come out about Phil and his relationship, Katona has jumped on the bandwagon and stabbed him in the back. I don't see anything wrong in what Phillip nor Fern said and i thought they were caring and sympathetic toward Madam Katona. By the way, I forgot just how brilliant Denise was on this show.

    If they genuinely thought she was drunk, why on earth would they let the interview go ahead. Fake-acting they were concerned during the interview, surely the wouldve taken it upon themselves to protect her from making a fool of herself (if she were drunk or had an alc9hol issue)/a certain level of duty of care. How awful. Even if they realised during the interview, surely they couldve cut to something else (as all TV shows do when emergencies happen).

    “She looked anxious”! No wonder she did after being treated and used as tool to increase ratings on an already toxic show. How far can ITV really twist that knife? So so wrong.
