  • I'm finally ready to show off my indie game I've been working on for the past few months! This game has been through several changes but I'm really happy with where it is now.
This game is inspired by Mario sunshine & sonic adventure 2. They are both is legendary games from the gamecube era and i hope i can do it justice.
    Schedule stuff:
You can expect a new Devlog at MINIMUM once a month at the beginning of the month.
I will also be making other types of videos like my usually essay videos through out the month as well.
Take a drink (of apple juice) every time i say 3d platformer

It's nice to hear I'm not the only one getting lost and demotivated when the game idea feels messy. Though I am sure everyone has these moments. Also, very cool idea generation concept.

the hardest part about gamedev is just arriving at a crystal clear idea of what the game should be. the technical part of implementing it is the easy part in comparison. it's so hard to be decisive especially when you have no idea whether option A, B, C, ... Z will be the most fun way to implement a certain mechanic nor what mechanics there should even be. trying to build my own games gave me an immense respect for people who can actually finish one.

I just wanted to drop you a quick message to wish you the best on your game development journey. As a fellow indie game dev, I know firsthand the challenges and hard work that go into bringing our creative visions to life. It's a path filled with ups and downs, but every step is worth it when you're passionate about what you're doing.
Remember, every line of code, every design, and every late-night debugging session brings you closer to your dream. Your dedication and efforts are inspiring, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes you.
Keep pushing the boundaries, and if you ever need a sounding board or just want to share some cool ideas, feel free to reach out.
Best of luck, and game on!

What's crazy is that 2 weeks ago, when this was uploaded, I graduated and started exploring what projects I wanted to make as a solo developer. I'd gone through multiple designs that were really messy and too big. Just 2 days ago though I did exactly what you said in this video. I focused on a game structure / mechanic I enjoyed and I removed an aspect of it to develop it in a unique and fun way. My new design is very manageable in size, it's a well laid out design plan, and it's a balanced workflow between design, programming, and asset development. In other words, I absolutely agree with your plan for making a design, it really works magic. Kinda funny that I accidentally did the same thing as you before watching this video though.

I agree with the sentiment of "why spend 3 months on cheese and crackers"?...
Put your best foot forward or none at all, And be true to yourself and your dream.
Good luck with your delivery... Mr. GameCourier.

I'd really recommend getting a stable foundation down, mechanics, and fluid motion before doing anything extreme like storybuilding or adding collectibles, looking at successful MMO's current vs creation is a good example of how these start out VERY simplistic, then add content as its been given a foundation.

Very interesting idea, 3D platformers are still a neglected genre. I'll keep an eye on this.
I really like your calm, mature narrative style in this devlog, it's really refreshing as so many devlogs focus on "humor", rapid edits and a huge dose of memes. The only suggestion I would make is that you adjust the volume of the background music...especially towards the end of the video it's very loud compared to the voice.

"I don't know anybody who loves all 3 play styles from Sonic Adventure 2." Hahaa! Well let me be your first, because I enjoyed all the play styles in both adventure games, and in general I am a fan of variety adventure games which is not a common game genre nowadays. That is also among the reasons I became a game dev myself, as not many folk make the games I like anymore.

This feels like a breath of fresh air compared to most game dev blogs on youtube. I do like how you go over the process and you're more methodical with your approach. As opposed to relying on fancy editing and being overly enthusiastic. It's very chill and down-to-earth. Not to mention sounds more useful than most devlogs so far. Good luck on your game, you seem to have very intreresting mindset to game development and I'm looking forward to the games that you come up with.

I wish you the best of luck man! I've gone through many attempts of making games / game engines / big projects, and never completed anything because of extreme burnout. Take your time, and don't rush yourself too much.

Crazy to make a game in a genre you are not a huge fan of. But I think it will be interested to see how you put your own twist on it. Looking forward to the next devlog

That's pretty good. All. I watch your whole channel and must say it is pretty good work so far. I'm a pro art-guy and now work alone on my own game just by myself. But if you want to talk about game dev, project management, or just get tips on how to learn this stuff faster or just know what mistakes I made then you can write to me. Well. my core interest is narrative RPG's but I can't find good projects on them so decided to go indie and make my own. But as self-educated in game dev, I accumulated a lot of different types of knowledge (enough to be a solo dev).
About this video. I think you try to think about big game ideas too early. You need to decide if you want to do the project to learn, and in this case, you do not need a game idea. Or you want to dedicate yourself to one long-time project and that's when you need the game idea. And in my opinion, you try to overthink what a game idea truly is. First, it need to be maximum elastic because it will evolve in the prototype phase of the project. So I just recommend you merge 2 things something like "My Little Pony meets realistic World War 1", or "Pharaoh meets Expedition to Arctic" or "Darksouls meet Deep Ocean". Just something that will be food for thought. Then you start the prototype and make a list of 5 things you want to have and 5 things that will be excluded or restricted. Then you just test and look at what works and what does not. And organically make a whole game idea. Prototype shows you what is fun and what is not, so you will build on what is and not be bothered by what is not. So, the faster you are enable to prototype, the better the idea and gameplay will be.

you could just switch the fludd to a different element, like since you were thinking of a jetpack, what if it shoots fire instead, and you can use it for combat, lighting explosives to clear paths, lighting dark areas, or burning stuff

I like how you explained the journey to coming up with your game idea, really interesting methods.
looking forward to seeing how the game develops over time.
one quick tip, the background music in your videos a bit loud, in some parts it was drowning out your voice and made it hard to listen to what you were saying
