Is that what that is? I have a strat i modded with a 5 way and blender pot that used to sound perfect with a 3 single coil setup, all fender tex mex pups, and i recently dropped the neck and bridge and moved the whole harness with the middle pup to another pickguard for a different strat and its now in an HSH config, all i did was make sure the buckers were in phase and just wired them like the singles were, leads and grounds all in the same places. I noticed that when i go to 2 and 4, it sounds incredibly weak, though i always just assumed it was a case if matching output values, not polarity. So would i switch out the wires for the buckers, the single, or is it something i need to switch out in the pots? If it helps i have an Ibanez Super 58 from the 80s i believe as a neck pup, the same old fender tex mex middle and a DiMarzio 36th anniversary (neck pup because they sent me the wrong one) in the bridge. Any help?
@@danterosales6985 start with the single coil first and see how it sounds. That should do the trick. I have had it where I've needed to do the neck and bridge pickups though as well. You never really know how some people wire their pickups. Lol
Great idea to use one of these guitars to practice/learn fret working skills. I've been able to take horrible guitars and turn them into really nice playing instruments. Most expensive tools you'll need are the nut slot cutting tools and the sanding beam for leveling the frets. Add the straight edge with the fret slot cut-outs to that list too as you will need to assure the neck is perfectly straight before leveling the frets. Once you attain the skills to level frets and make sure the nut is cut properly setup becomes pretty straight forward. Having these skills under your belt you will be able to much easier asses what is going on when evaluating a guitar for review or purchase. As you will find out from working on cheaply made guitars it very quickly becomes evident why nice guitars cost so much as build quality and material really do make a difference. My custom made Les Paul has been played daily for 33 years with the setup not changing or needing adjustment in all that time! Same goes for a CS Stratocaster I own too. Good Luck with learning these new skills and don't get discouraged, there will be times things don't seem to go as planned, don't give up.
I have one of the 170's.. I set up the action and intonation on all of my guitars. Been jamming on this for a while now and I didn't like the guitar when I first started playing it.. The craftsmanship isn't top notch but after I got it all sorted,, I play this guitar quite a bit now. The neck doesn't set quite square in the neck socket, but after a little light chiseling and it's now in perfect alignment. Action and Intonation are now spot on. The nut was set high from the factory, I again chiseled a little wood and reset the nut,, now it's perfect. I have 31 guitars and always do my own setups.. This one is right up there with my prized guitars now...
Actually good for the price, and for anyone who likes to mod/upgrade their guitars. If they were available here in Brazil for this price, I'd certainly buy one
The 170 is so good for metal right out of the box compared to the strat style guitars! Although they now do sell strats with humbuckers, before they did not. I think the 170 is the best bang for buck metal guitar you will find especially the generic unbranded guitars on ebay which is what I got. I got my "170" for $65 with free shipping! The tuners on the 170 are better than the strat glarrys that I have and better than the tele tuners also. The 170 headstock gives better string tnsion as well compard to the "S" Glarry guitars (GST). The 170 is the cheapest metal guitar you can get and it does a good job; compared to my $200 ibanez, the glarry can hold it's own, the Ibz is a little niver, but not 3X as nice (cost 3X as much). The 170 is an incredible value and is the perfect beginner metal guitar. And it's the perfect "cheap" metal guitar all around for anyone, period.

As someone who played primarily acoustic and wanted a cheap electric to toy around on at home. I picked up a Glarry GTS Strat with amp for $60. I’m actually turning it into a Jimi Hendrix setup as I’m a lefty and it’s a righty. Should be a fun project

Bought my SL59 from a really good Ebay seller, we agreed on about $175 (he bought it new in 2014 and essentially put it away), and I'm telling you that guitar has revitalized my interest in playing. Not saying it's for everyone, but if you, like me, enjoy just bashing out some rock and roll to take off the stress at the end of a crummy day, the SL is your soulmate. One volume knob to crank up the distortion and off you go. I've never been a huge fan of relic instruments, but these things just look great to me. I'm not a Gibson hater by any stretch, but I don't miss the LP. Any case, I've been really interested in knowing how other people feel about them. Seems I'm not alone.
Great review. Was wondering about those. IMO, best thing to do with that tremolo is to unscrew the arm, and leave it in the guitar case. Now you avoid all the problems.

I record in the group Neutral Earth, which you can hear on CZcams. On many of the recordings I use a variety of Glarry guitars. On the album- Coma I used a Glarry strat wannabe for about 85% of the album along with a Danelectro 12 string. I highly recommend a Glarry as budget conscience guitar.
I can't play with the volume nob close to the strings. I have to drop it down to the tone spot and just remove the tone. I don't even bother at all with strats because that.
You are like the 10th person that has suggested that with the volume knob, I think I am going to have to try that. I HATE playing the two strat like guitars I have because of the volume knob placement, what a dumb place for that!!
I won one in white signed by Alice Cooper and the neck is my favorite part of it. But I've always preferred a chunkier neck. All pickups definitely need changing, but other than that I like it.

I bought this Glarry and two more identical unbranded versions on eBay. The necks are all different thicknesses and the middle is a really low output pickup on all of them. I got the unbranded for about $65 each w free shipping. They sound good if you work on them a little.
I have this same guitar, mine is Blue. I didnt buy it from Glarry, but its the exact same I feel like these all come from the same factory, I like the neck on mine as its very comfortable to play. It did need a setup, replaced the pickups with Ibanez RG Hexbucker knockoffs. It is a fun guitar to play and very shred friendly.
Position 4 is never meant to be "out of phase". This is just something people like to repeat and maybe that's the way the middle pick-up was wired here, with appalling results. Maybe it was sometime done this way (by chance) on early Strat's with a 3-way switch, when the intermediate positions were not even meant to be possible and pick-up phase did not matter.
I know Strat's are not out of phase. Reverse wound & reverse polarity is something else which makes a pair of single coil pick-ups hum cancelling when combined. This is not out of phase.

I'm impressed with the internal packaging of the guitar... That styrofoam frame is really good... I'd keep it... I got myself a yellow Burning Fire for $59 2 years ago and it was surprisingly decent but if course it required a lot of work here and there to make it work well : Fret leveling, shielding, new pickups, etc... It ended up costing more than the guitar itself but who cares 😄😄 ?? At the end of the day it was a fun project and the end result exceeded my expectations...
Funny enough my friend bought a grey Ibanez from a thrift shop for around 120 USD. Dude got such a steal. Perfect shape too and nothing is wrong with it.
I just got one of there burning fire guitars the neck is the same as one the 170.I love the neck on it not fat to me very playable and comfortable.I had to fix the crooked volume knob and the input jack is tight other than that it was playable out of the box nut was cut right.I love this guitar I plan on getting a 170 style as well as a GST strat in white with a maple neck.
I bought an 1/8 inch peice of rosewood to make a couple of pickguards for my jazz bass and some other fenders and it cost me around 60$ for the wood alone. How the f are they selling that whole thing with hardware for 90$??
you can get a used ibanez rg170 for roughly the same money. yea this is a good modding platform but that chunky neck turns me off on it. for me its a nice body to stick better pickups in, replace the trem to something with a big block, and bolt an actual ibanez neck onto...
I love my glarry. Played good set up well strait out of the box. Less than $60 to my door.Edit Flip the wires on the middle pickup it will sound the same by itself and in phase in 2 & 4.
You might not believe this but I think that the Glarry 170 is better than the other brand and model that it resemble's. A guitar player will allways set up each individual instrument that they play for themselves in an effort to make it suit thier purpose. I would rather purchase a Glarry Guitar. It would save me alot of money because that's what I would do to any guitar that I would play anyway. It looks and sounds fine.
I've never seen any guitar that had a good set up from the factory. The only time you get a great set up opening the box is if the guitar shop you bought it from took the time to set it up for you.

To get the middle pickup in-phase, just reverse the ground and output wires on it. Free mod, and it'll increase the output in 2 & 4 position. All said, that guitar is only good for learning how to fix up better guitars. If you screw up, donate it and order another one.
*Did you measure the length saddle to the 12th fret and made sure it wasn't just the bridge that installed too far away from the neck? Doesn't sound horrible in the intonation but it's weird if they built a neck for 25.6" scale.*
Take a look at the Ibanez GRG170. Very similar to Glarry 170. --I swapped the switch wiring. Bridge and middle. Both humbuckers can play together like a Les Paul.
The middle pickup needs to be wired in reverse, or it'll phase out a ton of frequencies in combo with either of the HB's, especially with both HB's being so close in resistance. Just what I have noticed doing HSH wiring with a 5 way, Ibanez style.
jeez, that and an amp??? crazy times. Wanted a Fender SB RWB Strat when i turned 60. This was 2 years before the date. MIM, didn't matter. Didn't happen. Saw the Glarry Sunset was available again (yep, right around $60.00). Got cold feet and bailed. Wife was like "Is it any good?" Seemed good enough. 12 guitars that mostly sit. heck the one i play the most was $75.00. Hss strato type. That was bought over 5 years ago.
Hey Trogly, I really like the Glarry reviews; I'm always on a quest to find dirt-cheap guitars that are actually pretty good (assuming that they'll all benefit from some simple TLC .) The switch jack can stand to be replaced with a Switchcraft J11 (a whopping $11.50 on Amazon.) Positions 2 & 4 absolutely sucked. That said, it does indeed look real good. I like the clean, simple lines of the headstock -- no gettin' ridiculous in order to stand out, y'know? ... It was kinda hard to tell, but I imagine those pickups would suffice for a while. I might be tempted to swap 'em for something from Guitar Fetish, they have pickups in the $30 range that are actually darn good. I ain't no highfalutin' fancy luthier with decades of experience, or somethin' -- just another occasional home hobbyist.
This is great guitar to learn the ins and outs of a guitar. When you get it it will need work and what better way to learn with something thats under $100. And if a mistakenis made you haven't destroyed a nice insterment
The only thing is that this body shape resonates more towards a rock style sound and you're playing it like a Stratocaster it's kind of hard to hear what it actually is able to do without any real distortion applied to the pickups, just wondering.

If you really don't like the out of phase sound you can just swap the wires from the middle pick up around and that should put it in phase :)

Exactly...The tremolo was too cheap anyway...
On mine I even inserted a wood shim and turned it into a hardtail guitar...
Definitely the in between positions are out of face, try reversing the wiring of the middle pickup to see if that fixes it

I just got one of there burning fire guitars the neck is the same as one the 170.I love the neck on it not fat to me very playable and comfortable.I had to fix the crooked volume knob and the input jack is tight other than that it was playable out of the box nut was cut right.I love this guitar I plan on getting a 170 style as well as a GST strat in white with a maple neck.
I bought an 1/8 inch peice of rosewood to make a couple of pickguards for my jazz bass and some other fenders and it cost me around 60$ for the wood alone. How the f are they selling that whole thing with hardware for 90$??

Plus re-cutting the nut, fixing the jack and rewiring pick-ups, before replacing them because they sound terrible anyway.

you can get a used ibanez rg170 for roughly the same money. yea this is a good modding platform but that chunky neck turns me off on it. for me its a nice body to stick better pickups in, replace the trem to something with a big block, and bolt an actual ibanez neck onto...
is there a way to loosen up the whammy action mine is so stiff it lifts the rear of the bridge . mabe remove one spring ?

Flip the wires on the middle pickup it will sound the same by itself and in phase in 2 & 4.
Maybe a stupid thought, but wgen the whole nut is too high, should you file it from the bottom to take some height away?

You might not believe this but I think that the Glarry 170 is better than the other brand and model that it resemble's. A guitar player will allways set up each individual instrument that they play for themselves in an effort to make it suit thier purpose. I would rather purchase a Glarry Guitar.
It would save me alot of money because that's what I would do to any guitar that I would play anyway.
It looks and sounds fine.
I've never seen any guitar that had a good set up from the factory. The only time you get a great set up opening the box is if the guitar shop you bought it from took the time to set it up for you.
I got one of these i modded the whole jacksonfloyd rose and ibanez infiniti pick ups v7v8 sand v51 shit sounds wicked better than a Jackson or Ibanez high ends

To get the middle pickup in-phase, just reverse the ground and output wires on it. Free mod, and it'll increase the output in 2 & 4 position.
All said, that guitar is only good for learning how to fix up better guitars. If you screw up, donate it and order another one.
*Did you measure the length saddle to the 12th fret and made sure it wasn't just the bridge that installed too far away from the neck? Doesn't sound horrible in the intonation but it's weird if they built a neck for 25.6" scale.*
Firefly 338 is a better choice, for a decent budget guitar. Not everybody likes an semi hollow body though.
I have several Glarry's (not this one) and I really like the chunky necks.
Take a look at the Ibanez GRG170. Very similar to Glarry 170. --I swapped the switch wiring. Bridge and middle. Both humbuckers can play together like a Les Paul.

Middle pickup is wired backwards. Switch the wires around
The middle pickup needs to be wired in reverse, or it'll phase out a ton of frequencies in combo with either of the HB's, especially with both HB's being so close in resistance. Just what I have noticed doing HSH wiring with a 5 way, Ibanez style.

Wanted a Fender SB RWB Strat when i turned 60. This was 2 years before the date. MIM, didn't matter. Didn't happen.
Saw the Glarry Sunset was available again (yep, right around $60.00). Got cold feet and bailed. Wife was like "Is it any good?" Seemed good enough.
12 guitars that mostly sit. heck the one i play the most was $75.00. Hss strato type. That was bought over 5 years ago.
Hey Trogly, I really like the Glarry reviews; I'm always on a quest to find dirt-cheap guitars that are actually pretty good (assuming that they'll all benefit from some simple TLC .) The switch jack can stand to be replaced with a Switchcraft J11 (a whopping $11.50 on Amazon.) Positions 2 & 4 absolutely sucked. That said, it does indeed look real good. I like the clean, simple lines of the headstock -- no gettin' ridiculous in order to stand out, y'know? ... It was kinda hard to tell, but I imagine those pickups would suffice for a while. I might be tempted to swap 'em for something from Guitar Fetish, they have pickups in the $30 range that are actually darn good. I ain't no highfalutin' fancy luthier with decades of experience, or somethin' -- just another occasional home hobbyist.

This is great guitar to learn the ins and outs of a guitar. When you get it it will need work and what better way to learn with something thats under $100. And if a mistakenis made you haven't destroyed a nice insterment
The only thing is that this body shape resonates more towards a rock style sound and you're playing it like a Stratocaster it's kind of hard to hear what it actually is able to do without any real distortion applied to the pickups, just wondering.

Hey who knows glarry could end up being a decent guitar company. Look at thomman. Back in the beginning they sold some real shit guitars. But now, they’ve really stepped up their game and actually sell a decent guitar at a decent price.
the centre pup needs it's phase reversed. Positions 2 and 4 are useless otherwise.
