The trick I’ve always found with German cars (I’ve had Audi’s and BMW’s) is to totally ignore the manufacturers servicing guidelines. It’s my belief that they deliberately make them long so your car dies way way sooner than it should, so you either spend heaps with them on repair, or just get a new car. I’ve always dropped variable servicing and gone for 10,000 miles or 12 months, regardless of mileage. In the case of my 3 series, this is *half* the duration BMW recommends. Same applies to gearboxes. I’ve always changed the fluid every 60,000 miles. My last Audi was the notoriously unreliable 2.5tdi with the equally unreliable multitronic box. I took that car up to 200,000 miles on original gearbox, turbo, camshafts, the lot. I had the gearbox serviced 3 times, and the VNT mechanism on the turbo cleaned. Other than that, excluding basic suspension wear and tear, I had zero problems with it.
Changing the oil more frequently isn’t gong to stop all the junk plastic parts around the engine failing. The engines themselves are usually pretty reliable, it’s everything else attached to it that fails.
I own 2013 335ix with 76 miles. The car is been with very expensive repairs after the warranty expires I replaced the oil filter gasket, transmission pan gasket, ingine gasket pan, thermostat, gas tank because was cracked on top and was the risk the car be on fire. It costs me 2 grand to replace it. I'm going to sell it because is a fire pit of money every time broke down. I will not recommend BMW because even if you do the all the maintenance manufacture suggests it will brake no matter what.
Very informative video, potential buyers should definitely take note of the points raised. I have a 328i n20 engine. I had both timing chain fault and turbo failure in 06/2018. My model is early 2012, I got it used 2 years ago. My car had 57000 miles and was out of warranty when these problems occurred. BMW found fault with and preventatively replaced the timing chain, replaced the turbo and covered the cost for the parts as a goodwill gesture. I was asked to pay (a very reduced rate) for the labour, which I think is reasonable given the vehicles warranty has expired. If you develop any of the faults mentioned in the video, call BMW group and see what options you have, you don’t always need to spend thousands or pay the full cost for out of warranty repairs.
Got an F31 320d 184hp, 2012 delivered , one of the first touring variants with manual gearbox and Head up display. 200.000 km on the clock with no problems whatsoever and only once had to exchange the clogged windshield washer pump for 60 €. Fuel consumption is 5.2 Liter Diesel per 100km and the only complaint I have is that you cannot replace the Rubber pads on the steering wheel. Drive it fast and each day and it rewards you.. Will definitely get the new 3 series. Best car I ever bought

Thanks for the good detailed video. I have a BMW 320i - 2012 (luxury line). Had a problem with the horn on (aprox. 10,000 KM) tail light broken as you mentioned, and it was not fixable, I had to buy a new one (aprox. 12,000 KM). I had a failure in the Electronic circuit (aprox 37,000 KM) changing it could have cost me 5,000$ but BMW covered it although my warranty was done by that time. Had a problem with the breaking system (aprox. 58,000 KM) but fortunately it only took a reprogramming procedure to fix it. Front shield rubber frame, corrosion all over it. It started appearing around (aprox. 50,000 KM). Door internal handles, (the ones covered with the wood trim from the front side) the plastic back side of them are sticky and falling apart (started appearing approx. 10,000 KM). Mind you, I take good care of my cars, and I'm still fixing it at the BMW Garage, but whatever I do, this car is always giving me a hard time. But will be selling it soon, it's a pain...
holy crap, that is really, bad, i had a 2007 320d and it was a nightmare, i ended up hating it since it was built like a soviet peoples car, i thought the new version to be more reliable but it seems that not to be the case
Wow, I have a 2003 330i and there are no creaking or anything in the cabin. It's solid as a rock! Obviously due to the age I'm having to do regular maintenance but nothing serious like these newer BMW'S. I'm also having to change out the pillars covers but again due to the age of the vehicle but other than that it has been great and reliable
Hot climate can age your interior much sooner. Tinted windows help when parked in the hot sun. Up north or near the coast is ok but the central desert heat can ruin interior after a few years.
I own a low mileage car 2016 F31 320d 34000 miles. Had it since it was 11 months old. Never had any issues of any kind . Oil changed every 5000 miles even though BMW say its not due. Driven carefully and not thrashed. Just replaced the entire brake system as a matter of course with discs/ pads all around. Best car i have ever owned. Mainly does an 18 mile round trip down a motorway and gives me up 60mpg. Super cheap to run on servicing, insurance and road tax. I think most of the problems with these cars is trying to find well cared for examples which haven't been thrashed down the outside lane and left outside in all weathers. I recommend the F31 tourer model over the F30 saloon for practicality.
Thank you a very informative review I was worried about the twin tubos as i have a 320d 2007 E90 and have had no problems at all thanks again Michael from Australia
Recently bought a 320d Xdrive from 12/2015 with around 160.000 km, I had to fix both front wheel bearings but BMW replaced them under warranty. No other issues than that yet! wish me luck :)
@@rcast3763 202.000 Km, the EGR valve had to be cleaned, because it was clogged up and stuck in the open position. Passenger side front door lock sensor failed, got replaced for free. Other than that no issues, although the suspension ball joints are starting to get loose and need to be replaced soon
This is good info thanks. I would like to mention to check the battery tray for water. I don't know if this was a problem on the f30 but I know on the older E90's sometimes rainwater would drain into the battery tray into the boot / trunk. Not sure how this happens. But I have personally experienced it.
My 2013 F30 335i xdrive has had a couple notable unrelated issues @ 5 yrs, 65k miles: (1) plugged heater core - don't believe BMW when they say antifreeze is now a "lifetime fluid" which you "never have to replace" (same fluid in my former 2004 E46 was recommended by BMW for replacement). (2) overheated eccentric shaft (aka cam shaft). oil never ran low and never driven hard yet a core engine component overheated, lost temper, and was wearing. Replacement together estimated at $7k+. If you're looking at one, check computer codes and check that coolant has actually been replaced well before 50k miles.
I’ve got a 330d and when I floor it I wouldn’t describe the gear changes as ‘very fast’, but that’s just in comfort so I’ll try it in ‘sport +’ tomorrow! 😁
I just drove a 2014 330XD in Sport Mode - and it was crazy fast. I could not even sense a downshift - it just wanted to fly right away you press the paddle.
I own 2013 BMW 328i (N20 petrol), AT. It has almost all bells and whistles (360 degree camera, lane change assist... lots of electronics in short). I have almost 90.000km on it. No problems with engine whatsoever. Same goes for the gearbox and suspension. There are few rattles - one is buttons which lock door from the inside and other is rear C-pillar cover. Both fixable. Generaly - very satisfied with the car so far...
MantasZilinskasLT Do you park your car under direct sunlight? That could be a potential cause of your rattles. Also, where do you have your car serviced?

I wish there was an optional extra when buying this car called “Tell the bean counters to fuck off” For like $5000, the cheap windows, wiring harnesses, plastic taillight covers, hood release, window regulators etc would be replaced by quality parts that the engineers would be proud of, not the shit the accountants decided on. This is the problem with many BMWs. The cars are a joy and the powertrains are solid, but they let you down in dumb easily fixable things like window regulators or sunroof seals
I want to buy 1 but I don’t want speed I’m more of cruising which 1 would be best for pulling up clean type 335i looks good but I want to know parts easy to get
Any people still get problems in there 320d with the timing chain? I have a 2014 luxury line car. I will change the oil and filter every 8k miles but now I'm on 82k miles. Should I get rid next service? I'd prefer to keep it tbh
I have a question @5:41 minute 05:41 on the left side there is the F30 but the HEADLIGHTS look not like they should, and I saw this on VERY MUCH F30 (MORE THAN ANY OTHER E90 OR F10/11 , E60 WHATEVER!) The headlights dont look like the ORIGINAL CIRCLEs .... Can anyone explain my why this is so? more than 80% has changed full headlights and IDK why that is so.... Can they be "Upgraded" with the original ones which have circles. How muc hwill i need to pay for the circles, light bulbs etc (all in all both sides) ????????? SOOOO MANY QUESTION HELP PLS
the car on left side has the standard halogen headlights and the car on the right side has the optional Full LED headlights you can read more about the headlight upgrade here: f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1458019
E46 is a ugly piece of shit compared to the F30... What is good about the older BMW`s tho is that they r more reliable, with the E90 and up BMW started using plastic parts (for example the waterpump) instead of metal. Thats only because they want the cars to fail at some time so they can earn money... im looking at a 318i F30 and the only thing holding me back is the fact that BMW has started to use cheaper parts but selling them for the same price... The timing belt on the 1 series from like 2008 to 2011 is also a huge scandal, since that engine is still in newer BMW`s. BMW dont even cover the timing belt repair anymore...
The Gaming Norwegian the timing chain issue was to do with a camshaft design, and this was fixed in 2009. There are still some chain failures but these are usually restricted to vehicles that haven’t been serviced properly.
Hey, I have bought one like half a year ago with 200.000km. I have now driven over 8.000km after that. Still no rattling nothing, and the previous owner didn't had any service paper for timing chain maintenance. I always check for rattling noises on cold start. But nothing. It runs like butter. Is there anything else that could give hints about the timing chain condition?
I have an M3 and my partner a 328i, they are both fun in their own way, but I would not advise anyone to buy BMW. They are both unreliable and maintenance costs for anyone who has owned say Toyota/Lexus are simply ridiculous. The 328i is going in to have its aluminium engine bolts replaced before all the gaskets completely fail and let coolant into the engine. Yes aluminium engine bolts. I suppose they could have used chewing gum instead to save even more weight, but that might have failed while it was still under warranty.
I had two used BMW 3 series. I had so many problems, I ended up getting a Toyota. Obviously, Toyota is not much of a performer, but reliability wise it is a "The ultimate driving machine
Yup everybody said so. But, it always depends what used BMW's you got, people owning BMW's like to drive them to the max, but Toyota are driven in a different fashion, more normal, let's face it they are quite boring but dependable. I had 3 used BMW, i was very careful when buying them, took good care of them, oil change and filters every 10000 km and had no major issue with them.
Lol, When i bought this car My father was so disappointed, I leased a Jeep Cherokee before this and a Lexus before that and a Owned a Mazda before that. We have an X5 2007 in the family a Toyota Sienna 2014 and now my F30. Let me tell you the X5 that we still own gave THE MOST PROBLEMS BY FAR. The lexus only gave like a wheel senor issue and temperature sensor (covered under the lease). The Jeep gave noise issues, but nothing mechanical. The BMW is honestly so much more luxurious to drive especially when you get all the packages. BUT they break so often and cost so much to fix. The Mazda did have some issues on such as a few leaks but so much cheaper to repair than a German car. I'll probably sell this in a year or 2 and start leasing german because out of lease coverage they will run me dry.
@@zoeboi8562 I had E46, E90 and now F30. The first was petrol engine the other two diesel. E46 was 2006, E90 2011, and the F 30 is 2015. All great and fabolous to drive, regular maintenance and that was all. All above 200 k km on the clock.
I'm in South Africa owned two models of 3series e90 320d and f30 320d my experience both reliable cars. Only issue that i had with e90 was the clutch which failed after 70 000 km and unfortunately my car was written off in an accident. Now own the f30 2012 model bought it at 70 000 km now on 145000km no problems and it auto. But some minor issues are seat lever that tilts the seat can come off solution super clue, bonnet latch refuses to open when u pull it twice have to do trial and error to get it open. Otherwise normal maintenance. Oh almost forget the hooters failed had to replace it bloody expensive
those are bmw problems for many years and models, from e 46 to present, i own a few bmw (e 46,e60, e90, f30)so i know but after you fix them , is a nice car
@@hsaidinsan6345Well, for german cars - there are 80% + diesels on the second hand market for 5-15 years old cars in Europe anyway. Good luck finding a good petrol car around you. And the petrol engines from those years ( with some rear exceptions) - are no better.
Nice video thanks, am about to buy a 328, you shown a website with very good price from Germany, can you please let me know what german website is trustable for used bmw? thanks a lot for your video
the most reliable is the BMW website, since they offer used cars even with guaranty. But they are a little bit more expensive than buying a BMW from outside of the dealer. Edit: the website he used in the video is called "mobile de", also look for dealers who are speciallized for bmw, for example "Riller&Schnauk" in Germany, its a little bit more expensive than on the free market tho.
I know you just "translated" Fuyao as a joke but the correct characters are 福耀. I would translate this into something like "bright fortune". 福 = fortune/good luck, 耀 = shining/dazzling. The characters that google translate outputted are 服药. Just writing "fuyao" could have 20 different meanings unless you knew the characters or the context in which it was used.
Any of the diesels after 100k miles timing chains will be shagged the 6 cylinders stretch and snap don’t believe they don’t , the 4 cylinders snap unannounced a lot don’t believe me if you don’t want but I have worked as a bmw independent for last 18years after 9 years at the main dealer from N series engine introduction they are terrible so I would advise either buying one with chain done or budget to do it as a maintenance item around £1200 should cover it before complete failure after you won’t see much change out of £2500
my old 1.5l toyota had 215000+kms on it and I asked the toyota's mechanic if I needed to change the timing chain, he said the chain would probably outlast the car itself, lol. Btw he said change it if only there were loud timing chain noises.
Buddy, Fuyao is one of the biggest glass suppliers in the world. Also, I'm not sure if you used that Google translation as a joke or for real, but I'm certain that there will be people who will take that seriously

German cars can be problematic and expensive to repair.
I don't think he has Acura available in his country@pochoun33137
that`s disappointing for a new car... I haven`t had that much problems with a used Civic
holy crap, that is really, bad, i had a 2007 320d and it was a nightmare, i ended up hating it since it was built like a soviet peoples car, i thought the new version to be more reliable but it seems that not to be the case
Me too have so many Problems ,i hate now BMW and i buy now Toyota chr
I have one of these and it is the best money I have spent in my life! A Perfect car for every day use.

Hello boss, your detailing is so trustable. Could you please make a video for mustang? Thank you
Very good video, i have subscribed your channel. Keep going the good work
I own a low mileage car 2016 F31 320d 34000 miles.
320d doesnt have twin turbos.. it has twin scroll turbo...
Awesome video thanks
Thansk for very useful information.
Recently bought a 320d Xdrive from 12/2015 with around 160.000 km, I had to fix both front wheel bearings but BMW replaced them under warranty. No other issues than that yet! wish me luck :)
Hi Georg, how is it going one year later? Any problems, how many km did you put on the car? Looking to buy a similar car.
That would be great if you can give us an update please. Im interested of a 320d with B47 as well. Thanks

Excelente video, gracias!
I'm going back to buying a LEXUS. Thanks for this video man.
Excellent review 👏
Very good review 👏 👍
This vid deserves more likes!
Great video, very informative
Thanks!
You rock dude!
Thank you for the advice!!I'm looking for one
Good reviews bro
Ive been thinking of getting a F30 (316 or 318 or maybe an 320d) but because of videos like this i dont buy any...
Great channel
Hi,
is bmw 328 xi 2015 or 2016 with 48000 km, have a time changing problem or another big problem ?
thank you
I own 2013 BMW 328i (N20 petrol), AT.

Please help which gear box is more reliable in a 320d the auto or the manual?
I wish there was an optional extra when buying this car called “Tell the bean counters to fuck off”
For like $5000, the cheap windows, wiring harnesses, plastic taillight covers, hood release, window regulators etc would be replaced by quality parts that the engineers would be proud of, not the shit the accountants decided on.
I'd prefer to keep it tbh

i have a 335xi manual transmission. only issue i had was the water pump died at 60,000 miles but they do 60,000 - 80,000 miles
vismortis how much did it cost u to fix it or buy a new one?
Me too, but I'd rather go for an E46
Mine is 330 i xdrive 2018 so what kind of engine code is this
Hey, I have bought one like half a year ago with 200.000km. I have now driven over 8.000km after that. Still no rattling nothing, and the previous owner didn't had any service paper for timing chain maintenance. I always check for rattling noises on cold start. But nothing. It runs like butter. Is there anything else that could give hints about the timing chain condition?
I recommend b38 or b58 long live and high durabilty engines
I have an M3 and my partner a 328i, they are both fun in their own way, but I would not advise anyone to buy BMW. They are both unreliable and maintenance costs for anyone who has owned say Toyota/Lexus are simply ridiculous. The 328i is going in to have its aluminium engine bolts replaced before all the gaskets completely fail and let coolant into the engine. Yes aluminium engine bolts. I suppose they could have used chewing gum instead to save even more weight, but that might have failed while it was still under warranty.
Did they ever come with 6-speed automatic? Thinking of buying one(late 2014) but it has 6-speed auto, not sure if it’s legit. Rest of it was fine.
Can you make a review of the Toyota Auris
I'll probably sell this in a year or 2 and start leasing german because out of lease coverage they will run me dry.
rather b in a 3 series accident than a honda civic

I'm in South Africa owned two models of 3series e90 320d and f30 320d my experience both reliable cars. Only issue that i had with e90 was the clutch which failed after 70 000 km and unfortunately my car was written off in an accident. Now own the f30 2012 model bought it at 70 000 km now on 145000km no problems and it auto. @@hsaidinsan6345 your joking right? the 330d is supposed to be bulletproof lol.

I like the small SUVs.
Looking lci f31 320d 190bhp, year 2016.
Any of the diesels after 100k miles timing chains will be shagged the 6 cylinders stretch and snap don’t believe they don’t , the 4 cylinders snap unannounced a lot don’t believe me if you don’t want but I have worked as a bmw independent for last 18years after 9 years at the main dealer from N series engine introduction they are terrible so I would advise either buying one with chain done or budget to do it as a maintenance item around £1200 should cover it before complete failure after you won’t see much change out of £2500
Hi dcr review, could you review the bmw 1 series f20/f21
Where you from bro Czech??
Thank you, please.
Doesnt the 318d and 320d engines have the timing chain problem?
Just until 2012, after that it was fixed if im not mistaken
my old 1.5l toyota had 215000+kms on it and I asked the toyota's mechanic if I needed to change the timing chain, he said the chain would probably outlast the car itself, lol. Btw he said change it if only there were loud timing chain noises.
that’s how the timing chain in toyota/lexus works, and that’s how it should work in other cars too, lol
Yep think I will get the F10 from 2013 onwards, F30 has too many problems
