    My Mom was a member there growing up as a little girl. Very sad. There are many beautiful churches in St. Louis that have been destroyed by people. It is devastating and has impacted many. Someday I would love to see a documentary on the history of the churches in St. Louis. Many moved into areas to attend specific churches. The community revolved around the local Parrish.

    Wow as a Muslim i find this sad ... a house of worship is consecrated ground meant only for worship, a place of safety, welfare and community in Gods name . How sad a place of Gods remembrance is defiled and belittled what next turn it into a pub or strip club. I pray it returns to a house of worship as per its intended purpose and that people use it to learn and teach be a haven for the vulnerable. Even with this church abandoned. These kids are here to come together, get away from their home lives, and have fun in positive spirits. It goes to show, no matter what we as humans choose to abandon. Jesus will never abandon his flock. His sheep will always be protected. And every child is born part of his herd.

    This is what happens when the descendants of the people who built these church no longer want to live in that neighborhoods. They abandon these neighborhoods. Then the dioceses do not want to sell these churches to other church bodies. The dioceses let these churches sit vacant so long until they go into a state of disrepair and are too costly for other church bodies to handle by then. In the area where I live, a brewery took over one of these churches. On the altar are three gigantic metal brew vats and the rest of the building had been converted into a restaurant connected to the brewery. It’s a thriving business. But still sad to look at the altar and see those big metal brew vats where the Mass used to be celebrated. Some of these churches are permitted to fall into such a state of disrepair until they must be demolished. I don’t understand why the dioceses don’t try harder to come up with solutions but would rather let these beautiful churches decay. SMH

    Perhaps this is a lesson for church planters in the current century not to build elaborate, ornate churches unless the size of the community calls for it. Large, elaborate buildings are indeed expensive to maintain, and that funding could better go to active ministry.
    Nevertheless, we must also remember what Jesus said to Judas about the nard.

    • @jonathanstensberg
      @jonathanstensberg Před 11 měsíci

      The size of the community DID call for it. St Louis was the 4th largest city in America in the 1900 and 1910 census, around the time it hosted the world’s fair. It was still the 8th largest when the population peaked in the 1950 census. For many reasons, the city has lost two thirds of its population since then (a slightly greater fraction than even Detroit!). Even without declines in religiosity, you would expect two thirds of the churches to close as a result.

Unless I am combining two tales into one, after the priest started to get attention and help, some thugs broke in and killed him. Or injured him severely. It has been a few years and this is a shadow of a memory. You could call the local bishop but he would have been getting pretty bad press for leaving an old guy alone like that. How sad. Its a testment to how christians are becoming a smaller group and can no longer maintain older buildings sometimes. Praise be to God that when my Anglican congregation saught to build a new building on a different site (what was our church hall in a 1920s building estate which was in much disrepair and we couldnt afford to maintain both sites) that we sold the victorian church in the city centre to another group of christians so it could continue to be a place of worship to God ❤. Even then, it was a hard decision for us to leave where our parish was founded. But it was not viable anymore - since the 1800s, the town centre has changed a lot. The people it was made for were brewery workers who lived at the site. But now the church is surrounded by shops and the people of the parish live on an estate some distance awy from the original building, yet it had no way of people parking there. It was also situated in a park, where people would think it funny to throw stones and smash the original stained glass. But the church is not the building but the believers.

      You couldn't really call the building originally a "community center." Stuff means stuff, right?

      @@PatrickKQ4HBD Sure. I also didn't call it a community center.

    Pretty sad tbh. That's the kind of decay and mindset you expect in areas like that. Ty dems.

    I understand the grief at seeing beautiful things gradually fade away. But what if this was neither bad nor good, but just the way of things, the natural cycle of life. Things come, things go, nothing remains. St. Louis and much of the midwest is known for decreasing populations. There is simply not a congregatition to maintain this beautiful church. Sad, sure. But bad? It doesn't have to be. On the other hand, as I drive around the parts of Texas where populations are booming, I see new churches sprouting up all over the place. New Catholic congregations that did not exist when I was growing up in CYO. Happy and good? Sure, if you want it to be. But is this not simply the change and shift of Life from one form to another? There is no birth without death. And new life springs from death's ashes.

    Matt, are you from St Louis? I’m just a couple hours away, and would love to get together for coffee sometime if you’re local!

    Keep turning your back on God and ignoring your Sunday obligations and soon you’ll never see a church anywhere.

    I’m pleased that it’s last few years will at least be spent building community and bringing people together as it crumbles, instead of becoming just another abandoned building, only harboring those who wish to isolate themselves from others or are forced to isolate by others.
