Never use stands except for mezco and that's because I like the aesthetic. Part of the fun is seeing how extreme of a pose I can get them into and maintain whilst on display.
Thanks for the breakdown, Nerdy. I’ve got an amalgamation of stands, tape, mason jars, tack, jerga blocks, and more holding my collection up. Managing to keep it all mostly hidden is the method behind the posing art form.
I designed my own articulated 3D printed flight stands. Did it in a modular way so I could increase the height or switch out for better parts. On my end, a roll of filament with a baggie of screws and nuts was much cheaper then buying anyone else stands. I could make them to my specifications as well. I can hold up a mafex, Neca, or a Mcfarlane Bane. Does require a 3D printers, the materials, and either someone willing to provide files or dedicating time to making your own. I use them in conjunction with the risers or I mount them in bookcases, walls, fridges, etc. The foot clamps though are still good to have because sometimes you just want them standing around. The pegs on their own are limited by the strength of the ankle rocker.
It's funny how different people can come up with the same solutions. I'm doing the exact same thing as you and so far, it's been working great. There's something satisfying about being able to print off a couple of new stands whenever you need them. With regards to the peg stands, it's very true about the ankles of the figures being the weakest link. I've 3D printed these too and they work amazingly well. The only time I see one fall is if that particular figure has weak ankles.
For stands, it depends on the figure and the strength of the ankle joint and also how fragile it is. For something like GI Joe Classified or Star Wars Black Series, I have found that Reactions stands work very well. These can also work with Ultimates figures. If I am concerned with the figures not having strong enough ankles , I will also use Plymor Doll stands. The DSP 30 and DSP 4125 are great for MOTU Classics, Ultimates, Mythic Legions, Neca figures ... really, anything that you want to guarantee will remain upright. Some of the later Mythic legions do have some fragile pieces , especially the brute sizes and for those the DSP 4125 are fantastic. Not to plug another company but Collecting Warehouse offers them and the more you purchase, the more they will discount them.
Those Ringside stands are probably the best ones I've used too. They somehow defy gravity better than any of the generics I've tried. And the garage door can really do a number on those bookshelves in the frog.
Thank you! This is exactly what I what have been working on myself after a minor disaster caused me to have to rebuild my collection room. Been experimenting with different stands for months. I never even thought about the sticky dots. And I am in full agreement of your assessment of the rest!
Man I gotta say that’s one of the best things about those figures. I like more of the Marvel characters but when you include a decent stand with the figure it makes it neck and neck. Just wish McFarlane would branch away from “the Big 3” but that’s a complaint for another day …

Mine never work and it takes a circus balancing act to make them work . The best stands are the ones with a clip they are fool proof .
I’ll be offering pegs (in three different sizes) that are compatible with the Ultimate Weapons Rack soon. If you have a 3D printer, they will be free to download, otherwise I will have packs for sale through my site or through a few other stores run by customizers who do 3D printing.
I'm going to try the dots idea, but I've been using Kaiser doll stands for almost 30 years. Not the cheapest option, but they are rock solid. Them being height adjustable means that I can do some taking off poses as well.
Great vid. Was thinking about this very topic this weekend when one of the figures in the back of my shelf sent everything in front of it falling forward and onto the floor. 😂
Got a whole packet of circle stands for my Lightning Collection. But something I have to use the stands with the arms. For smaller figures, or ones that are in flight.
I've designed and 3D printed a variety of stands. I've purchased the sticky dots but have yet to give them a try but they look and cost very effective.
Big Nerdy! Tip to make your own stands for pennies! What you need; plastic lids, Play-Doh, optional; spare guns, robot parts, plastic tree pieces, plastic rock pieces, or small gravel or pebbles 1. Take plastic lid, Pringles like works for average Fufures, bigger lids for larger figures. 2. Use Play-Doh, as deep as you need for the pose you want. Green works pretty good. Play-Doh is cheap. 3. Optional. Decorate with extra guns, robot part, pebbles, whatever you want. Eventually, Play-Doh will dry out and Crack, but it's easy and cheap to replace. I've done it hundreds of times with no problem.
Great video man! Some awesome tips. I tend to use several different types of stands throughout my collection. I love dynamic flight stands, BUT there are some crappy ones out there.
I use the round and rectangular EBCO 32mm peg stands and the Tamashii Stage Act 4 sold on Amazon. My entire collection uses stands. If a figure's foot peg hole is too small, I have a jewelers drill with a bit the exact size a foot peg hole should be to fit my stands.
Ty you so much for this information and especially ty for your Chanel I’ve been a subscriber but timid about commenting on your channel Please keep your channel going.
I have been using Kaiser 2075 metal doll stands for 6 and 7 inch figures for years and years. Great for static displays and they can be used to brace other figures that may not have stands in case they fall. They are a bit pricey, but they never fail...ever. Plus they prevent domino falls. Perfect for the figures who just will not stand. I will be buying the dots though...thanks for the info.
My favorite (maybe not for space but for dynamic poses and superior stability) are these metal doll figure stands. there's no specific brand but they're hexagonal bases with thick sturdy bendy stands similar to tbleague stands. A bit expensive at 12 to 15 a piece but honestly they're great for flight poses and holding heavier figs (especially in the sixth scale 3zero figs upright as they don't include their own stands)
I use the foot clamps and the dots the most. The Dots will lose the stickiness over time too. The foot clamps are great minus not being able to put larger feet in them. Especially one with freakish feet like Juri from Street Fighter. Or say the Hulk. Luckily I can stand most my collection without these. The harder ones or for crazier posing, these options are great. Maybe I could use the sticky dots with the foot clamp! Also one issue I have had with both these options is, sometimes the ankle joints are too loose or become loose and they call over at the ankle but still have their foot attached to the spot.
Hey Bignerdy, can you do a collection tour of your own collection? I would really love to see that. If it already exists then I am sorry that I am stupid.
I started using Museum wax. It holds very well at least for what I use it for. But I will definitely try the dots since ironically enough I use to close the seams on capes when I add wire to them.
Dc collectibles made the best dynamic stands because you could combine them to make different height single pole stands around 3.5feet maximum height for a regular 6 inch figure and lower. Now you can have flyers at all different heights away from the walls to give your dioramas much more depth
I need some flight stands bad! Every time it comes down to buying a stand or a figure, I always pick the figure lol. Excellent vid! I like when you talk about different stuff like this ✌️!
Another con for Hasbro figures is the inconsistent depth of the foot peg slot. On most MLs it's 2-3mm, but I'm seeing on many Black Series it's only 1-2mm so they don't stay attached to most stands that I'm buying.
Matt, you deserve 100k+ subs. You are the very best combination of entertaining, informative, and positive. Would love to see you collab with Robo sometime! And I will definitely try the Big Nerdy Brand Sticky Dots now!
I use a combo of the sticky dots and Neca stands. This way I can move the figures around easily when I dust or just want to rearrange my shelfs. The dots keep the figures stuck to the stands. Neca used to sell the stands on ebay really cheap if you bought them in bulk. I like them cause they are clear and the Neca logo is rather small and unseen unlike the ringside ones.
Texas native here. Every summer I leave town for a couple of weeks. When I come back after the house has been sitting at 90 degrees, I know I’m coming back to a few figures that feel onto the floor. Curious to see this video for sure.
Hey you listed Museum Wax! It seems to work best on glass surfaces. So if you're using Detolfs you're in better shape than Billys. Those tiny sticky dots are probably the best all around, for sure. I really want a nice riser system that isn't a spice rack or designed more for Funkos. Landspeeder Luke seems to have a nice setup for his, but he also prints his own.
I am totally trying out the sticky dots! An option you may want to take a look at for more dynamic stuff are the wire stands. The are compete customizable and pretty strong. The downside, is you would need to paint them based on your background, and I'm not sure how rounded the figure facing end is. Greg Cook has a DIY video on them. I've also seen others used on either Unparalelled Universe on occasion or D Amazing. My biggest issue is for something like a Batman animated fig. Those tiny ankles can't hold anything.
Big Nerdy, I'd love to hear your thoughts on shelving units. I realize you said you don't have unlimited space, but I'm always curious about cases that keep dust out vs bookshelves and such. Also, we definitely another tour of your collection. I noticed the Dark Knight Trilogy next to Batman & Robin where a Tumbler should probably be.
Love this video. The sticky dot are the only solution i haven't heard of, so im trying that asap. I happen to be addicted to Mafex, so I have a ton of Mafex stands that work well for dynamic posing. Not a practical solution of course, since Mafex figures are $50-$110 on avg. I also make my own wired stands flight posing using 14 gauges wire from a Hardware store. It's pretty cheap & highly customizable solution if you don't mind a little DYI.
Can of Beams hex base is the absolute best. A bit pricey compared to some other ones but it comes with 3 different peg sizes you can put in different orientations on the stand.
I just use galvanized wire from home depot. Great for flying, levitating. Even if the figure won’t stand, I can make a standing base out of the wire. So far, wire has been the absolute best, most customizable, and simultaneously cheapest solution for stands. You can add alligator clips with protective rubber over the teeth marks and attach to the wire for winged figures. If you are good about hiding the wire, or dont care about seeing wire, imo, they are the best if you want to pose them in permanent dynamic positions. Since 2015, I have only had 3 falls off my shelf, and they were all figures I had standing without any support. My magneto suspended 10” in the air loaded with accessories, has never ever fallen. Home Depot has 100 ft of 12 gauge 150 lb galvanized wire made by ook. It’s like $9 for 100’. One spool has maintained my shelf for nearly 100 figures. I only really collect jim lee, xmen tas xmen 97 style figures so. I swear by them.
Longtime watcher, first time commenting! This is the best video I have ever seen on the subject. I am partial to Mcfarlane stands, as they are kinda free. Keep up the great vids, nerdy!
What Museum Wax/Archivists Wax is good for is not getting figures to stand. It good for loosely, lightly and stain free affixing small parts. So if you want to put all those blood slashing and splattering effects on a figure, thats when you use the wax. It's not to withstand earthquakes. It's to tack down stuff like glassware in display cases so normal everyday vibrations don't cause it to move. The benefit to the wax over the funtak for things like blood effects is the wax is pretty much invisible for photography. The downside is the hold is more fragile. I use it alot for putting things in figures hands that are not specifically meant to be held.
I could be the only one, but i REALLY like the figure stands that Hasbro gives with the G.I.Joe Classified Retro figures!! They’re thick, and the figures stand strong with them
I use sticky dots or double sided foam tape and attach it to 3/4 to 1 inch cut popsicle stick. Then take the other side of dot/tape and attach it to the bottom of the figures foot. Then let it stand on its own. It looks ugly but does the trick.
Would you still recommend the sticky dots for very rare vintage figures? I have some vintage Black Hole figures and they have no peg holes. I am worried about what the long term effect on the paint of my figures. Excellent video by the way.🙏👍
Do the sticky dots leave any residue over time? If not I may go for that. I currently use the dynamic stands from Amazon which seem to be the only ones that hold up heavy Neca figures, and I use magnets in the foot hole on top of metal washers for lighter figures, which works surprisingly well. Also, I remember I asked you about the best figure stands like 3 years ago so this video is many years in the making! Thanks!
I like the quality of the video, but I'll say this as constructive criticism: More show and less tell. I was hoping ofr b-roll of most of these applied even if was to show them failing.
Some people like that approach, and if it works for them, more power to them. I'd rather just have stands for my figures rather than getting sheets of metal to put on the shelves to magnetically hold them there.
Just came into my office this morning to find one of my stands had an accident so most of the figures were on the floor. Just ordered the sticky dots so hopefully won't be having that issue again.
.60-$2 a stand average is just not something I've ever seen, but I wish. Stands are stupid expensive IMO. I really like McFarlane and NECA's flight/dynamic stands of all the mass produced kinds. They sure aren't perfect, but they're sturdy and versatile. NECA being the better of the two.
I get frustrated with dynamic stands. The joints get loose over time, and I need to screw them tight. The clamps are limited in size and strength, and there are a lot of figures that are too big and bulky to be held in the air. And the plastic in the stands ends up cracking over time, even if the figure is lightweight.
I’m wrestling (pun intended) with stands for 1/6 figures. Like Hot Toys come with big chunky display stands but they take away from the aesthetic. But when the figures go down they go down HARD. haven’t figured that one out yet…
Bluetak and loctite poster putty will also discolor the plastic of your figure after like a week or a month. Definitely don't recommend to use unless you're only posing for pictures
The ladies get a smaller hole … 🤣🤣🤣 I heard that before you mentioned where my mind was. lol But seriously, I would be willing to pay a reasonable price plus a little for your efforts if you sold stands for the figures you sell and even worked out what else fits them if we’re talking older figures. I’ve been able to make do with what I’ve found, but I’m SURE there are better options.
Mcfarlane stands work great like someone else said here. They sometimes work better than Neca stands with my neca figures. Mcfarlane stands are only crap with some Black Series and a few Marvel Legends.
I swear it’s so weird to see guys that can’t pose or even make a figure stand and most people have no problem. I feel like part of their brain is missing or something to not be able to figure out balance. And why is daredevil on a flight stand in the air when he looks like he’s walking. lol. What is going on. Make my brain hurt.
What is your preferred way to keep your action figures standing?
In the package or box, sorry but it's me.
The DC Multiverse stands have never failed me. The small rectangular stands I use for Joes are bad.
Never use stands except for mezco and that's because I like the aesthetic. Part of the fun is seeing how extreme of a pose I can get them into and maintain whilst on display.
Mine are all standing on their own or leaning against something.
Thehexastack are my preferred choice…
What is worst when you go to fix one and the entire shelf goes in a tidal wave of plastic lol.
Big nerdy: "this was pre flood"
My wife: "...is he...talking about Noah?"
You, to your wife: "GAWWDAMMIT, WOMAN, NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT THE BIBLE....!"
Big Nerdy had me nervous with that thumbnail 😂😂
fr tho
The Hex stand you was at Power-Con called Hexa-Stack
Yes sir!
Thanks for the breakdown, Nerdy. I’ve got an amalgamation of stands, tape, mason jars, tack, jerga blocks, and more holding my collection up. Managing to keep it all mostly hidden is the method behind the posing art form.
The Gorilla Glue brand sticky tack doesn't dry out. It may eventually but we're talking years. It also holds better.

I'm a big fan of the Can of Beams Hex Stands. He also has an adapter for the Mezco flight stand that takes up a lot less space.
Don't they make cool effect pieces also?
i know the community will hate me saying this.. McFarlane stands are really good .
Nope I agree they are pretty good, sometimes I wish the peg was a little longer though
Man I gotta say that’s one of the best things about those figures. I like more of the Marvel characters but when you include a decent stand with the figure it makes it neck and neck. Just wish McFarlane would branch away from “the Big 3” but that’s a complaint for another day …

That’s how they get you”this is a whole lotta plastic common “

Thanks for this video, Big Nerdy. Now, I know what I want to get - the dots. 👍
Got a whole packet of circle stands for my Lightning Collection.
But something I have to use the stands with the arms. For smaller figures, or ones that are in flight.
I love the clear ringside stands for my figures
I've actually been interested in getting some of those! They are good, right?
I like Alpha Collectibles stands. 3-peg style. So far at least one of the pegs fit the holes snug without any problems.
I've designed and 3D printed a variety of stands. I've purchased the sticky dots but have yet to give them a try but they look and cost very effective.
Big Nerdy! Tip to make your own stands for pennies!
What you need; plastic lids, Play-Doh, optional; spare guns, robot parts, plastic tree pieces, plastic rock pieces, or small gravel or pebbles

I really appreciate the research. You probably could have applied for a federal grant for the research.

I’m so glad somebody brought up blue tack! I use it for smaller figures. I haven’t had them dry that much… 🤔 but yea don’t move it around much.

I have a handful of figures that have been held up my museum wax for years. You gotta roll it up into a ball before putting it on their feet.
Can of Beams hex base is the absolute best. A bit pricey compared to some other ones but it comes with 3 different peg sizes you can put in different orientations on the stand.

Matt, you stuck to the topic and left me standing at attention 😄 I appreciate you dotting the best option 🤪✌️
Storm collectibles stands are good ones for those heavier figures
All my figures (mostly marvel legends) are standing on their own, i have a few in flight poses and i think their stands meant for shf figures

Temu has some pretty good stands. Stuff like that I've had great luck with on that site.
I use sticky dots or double sided foam tape and attach it to 3/4 to 1 inch cut popsicle stick. Then take the other side of dot/tape and attach it to the bottom of the figures foot. Then let it stand on its own. It looks ugly but does the trick.
I got the Ironwong flight stand and that thing seems to work absurdly well
Took a hot minute to get here but whattayagonnado

Rather than blue tak, I've used dental wax. It's just sticky enough, clear and non-corrosive.
Glad you didn't fall for the trap of installing small magnets into the foot holes.
Some people like that approach, and if it works for them, more power to them. I'd rather just have stands for my figures rather than getting sheets of metal to put on the shelves to magnetically hold them there.

Awesome, very creative thumb nail . Lol😊
Hell yes. I’ve been debating getting stands
Good video and I’m going to buy some sticky dots!
I gotta get me some polka dots
All figures fit on the cheap Chinese stands from Amazon if you have a 1/8" drill bit.
.60-$2 a stand average is just not something I've ever seen, but I wish. Stands are stupid expensive IMO. I really like McFarlane and NECA's flight/dynamic stands of all the mass produced kinds. They sure aren't perfect, but they're sturdy and versatile. NECA being the better of the two.
Sticky dots don't damage figure paint or shelving?
I get frustrated with dynamic stands. The joints get loose over time, and I need to screw them tight. The clamps are limited in size and strength, and there are a lot of figures that are too big and bulky to be held in the air. And the plastic in the stands ends up cracking over time, even if the figure is lightweight.
I design & 3d print my own stands that light up.
I wonder if these Sticky Dots will hold a figure upside down?
Like a Spider-Man or Beast?
The new dynamic hasbro stands are great, and they are 15 bucks for 3 pack
Use dynamic display stands found someone selling f I r 1.25 each stocked up got sick of falling figures
Where do I find the foot clamp stands? I’m not having any luck.
I do like Neca stands
What a great video thank you!!!
Could someone tell me what the figure in the thumbnail. Not wolverine but the taller one
I miss the obitsu stands they are the best.
Anyone happen to have any recommendations for 4" Jakks Pacific Sonic the Hedgehog figures?
A good substitute for blue tack is Mounting Putty. Thank me later 😊
The fact that Hasbro figures don't all come with stands at this point kind of reeks of cheapness, especially as they keep increasing prices.
Yeah the non-standard Marvel pegs are silly
I got about as many boxes filled with different stands, as I do figures.
Mcfarlane stands work great like someone else said here. They sometimes work better than Neca stands with my neca figures. Mcfarlane stands are only crap with some Black Series and a few Marvel Legends.
@Nerdzoic
Does the sticky dot adhesive damage/discolor paint or plastic?
Where are the links?
That thumbnail is crazy😭
Is there a channel out there or influencer who does the best posing for figures? I always struggle with that and I am looking for inspiration !
What line you collect? Action Display does some sick videos for Black Series
Damazing
He did mention J Hernandez earlier who is one of the best period.
D Amazing is great as well.
That thumbnail is wild, the revoltech stands are pretty good
Elevate peg free stands. The old version
Mezco stands are the best.
Lol right. I don't use any stands at all, my guys stand on their own.
