This is amazing! Finally we're awakening that our economic model is completely outdated. We need more leaders and politicians getting to know about this doughnut model ASAP!

No only outdated - positively ecocidal. Sadly we are are too late to slip smoothly into sustainability, only several decades of determined ethical IPAT Degrowth will give us a chance to survive.

I had the privilege of hearing Kate speak at the Commonwealth in 2019, and she was a dynamic speaker with a very clear vision of how we have to move in this century if the planet is to remain habitable for most of humanity.

About time people realized that infinite growth on a planet with finite resources is insane. We need to live within the doughnut in this video, balancing our consumption and production with the well-being of the natural world.
People in the future will look back at us and gasp in horror at how we strip mined the land and sea, razed forests to make overpriced properties, destroyed the ecosystem just to put extra digits in bank accounts.

Funny, I never did understand GDP as a measure of growth. Thanks for the doughnut., Kate. Moving toward sustainable development will change humanity.

Kate Raworth's thinking is spot on. And the animation is awesome, too.

We will have to adopt this sooner or later. Sooner by choice and in a managed way. Later when it is forced on us by ecological castrophe. I would go for sooner.

In assessing how we get our world out of what is going to a cataclysmic meltdown how we shape the problem statements must be re-stated. "The greatest challenge to any thinker is stating the problem in a way that will allow a solution." B. Russell. What I see in Doughnut Economics for the first time is an inclusive and holistic view which - if we can get the platform to get it propagated - will lead us to better outcomes. It'd our world - we have to fix it for all!

There are many alternatives to the GDP. For example the Better Life Index (OECD), the World Happiness Report, Genuine Progress Indicator, Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare, Gross National Happiness of Buthan, ...

I believe that the biggest waste in Brazil is the human capital (poverty). We need to fix the local economy (base). I'm living in a small city where more than 80% of the population works with informal jobs (they don't pay income taxes, but they use the government facilities like schools, hospitals, etc... ). Therefore, we need to pay attention in our local economy. I like to watch a TV program called Epicerie Fine/TV5 Monde, they show how we can create a strong local economy chain. As a result, we need to focus in our most important asset, the humans in order to change our economy.

Success and achievement should not be based on how much money and material we have but on how healthy and happy we are. And a government should put the well-being of the citizen and environment on its priority list.

esse novo modelo econômico mundial pode ser chamado também de sustentabilismo. não importando tanto o nome, desde que seja nesses moldes

  • @harrisjm62

While it draws a good conclusion it has a false premise. GDP doesn't actually measure production, not even real GDP does. It measures spending. So when OPEC reduces oil production and increases prices, we see a GDP increase. Additionally GDP cannot measure changes in property law or use. So if all automobiles were used means of public transport tomorrow, or rented rather than sold, this could keep GDP spending stable while having not changed anything materially speaking. Because money comes from credit and measures credibility, it is technically possible to have infinite growth. It's not a physical thing, and neither is property. Property is a right, a contract. It is a great use of planetary limits though.

I’m not sure I understand fully what your trying to say other than changing business models and price all impact GDP, which they may. But I will take you up on one point. It is not technically possible to have infinite growth in a finite world.

This is a good idea. however who is gonna decide what the boundaries are? which countries will decide what is within the boundaries and what is outside? I think its very interesting ideas but it still has to think about abstract ideas!

ofcourse the richer countries and leaders from these countries will be the ones with most power, but who says they will not take in account their own interest? I know this video says the opposite of that, but how would we change the way of thinking of these leaders and make sure companies won't go to their own profit

If you're actually looking to find out what the model is, don't bother watching the 7 videos. They go in to no details at all. Neither do they explain the advantages of this model over capitalism/ mixed-economy.

This is very good but as someone qualified in both areas of sustainability & finance/economics, I do not believe we have 50 years ... I would have said 5 years at the time you published this video. That is now over 4 years in the past. I believe we are on the pinhead right now - the imperative to act was in the past and the nonsense of COP just recently just shows that some decisions should not be made by Politicians perhaps. I'm in Australia and the grotesque and fundamentally flawed approach being taken here at the Federal level is a crime against humanity.
