- Here are some incredible recording done for Starday records with Don Reno, Red Allen, Chubby Wise, and Frank Wakefield. Supposedly recorded in November 1961 at Starday Sound Studio during a DJ convention in Nashville TN. I say supposedly because I have seen a few different sources that state it was recorded in 1962 or 1963. Either way it's some of the greatest bluegrass ever recorded!

Definitely some of the best bluegrass ever recorded! I think Chubby Wise's contributions with all that superior bluesy fiddle playing adds a tremendous amount to these recordings.

reno knew the board as well a great classical guitarist. cor what he offered, he was so underappreciated. seeing him and red and mac live was probably my favorite bluegrass show of all.

I thought Red sang lead and Reno Tenor most of the time? I know Don did a few songs when Red wasn’t around that he sang lead on, but I understood the usual thing was Reno on Tenor and Smiley with his beautiful smooth and effortless style sang lead? Jason, correct me if I’m wrong because I’m “The new kid on the block” when it comes to Reno and Smiley, only finding then in the mid 90’s while I was dating a musician who admired those who dared to play outside of the sandbox....Reno on banjo certainly made an impression on me doing just that! And, not being a fan of social media, I discovered CZcams a few months ago looking for a band I used to sing country music with, and somehow ran across Jason Skinner who started keeping Don Reno’s legacy alive by teaching other pickers to play like him....at least trying to! I have learned a lot about why Reno caught my ear just by watching a few of Jason’s videos! He has really put in a lot of time in to know the things he does, and we should all be thankful
Thank you Priscilla for the kind words. This particular set of cuts were with Red ALLEN not Red SMILEY. I have the info about these cuts in the description. Red Allen was one of the greatest bluegrass singers of all time. But he is polar opposites compared to Red Smiley. Red Allen's voice was very high and Red Smiley's was very low and mellow. And you are correct about the Reno and Smiley duo. Red sang lead and Don sang tenor. But in these cuts with Red Allen, Don isn't singing at all. He's only playing banjo. Red Allen and Frank Wakefield are the singers on these cuts

Thanks for great upload Jason. Always nice to hear Frank with Red . And the Greenbriar boys in the configuration you have uploaded appeared in Montreal in 1965. Frank and Fred( bass) came to our home for dinner one night.
Three of these exact recordings,(‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken’, ‘Mountain Strings’ and ‘Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes’), were released on “The Mountain Music Sound of the Stanley Brothers (Starday 201)”. Hylo Brown, The Country Gentlemen, Vern & Ray, The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers and Ronnie Stoneman were also on that LP. The tracks that the Stanley Brothers did on that album were recorded in May and July, 1960.
I had to listen all the way through twice. Oh how many of the modern so called pros have forgotten what real bluegrass sounds like. This is TRUEGRASS with the fire & drive like it used to have!! How do I get this? Has this been released by the people who now own the old starday recordings? I have to have this!!!!!!!! Best material I've ever heard from these four musicians period. These four should have formed a band. They're so smooth together. The BGAB of the 60's. Who is playing the bass?
It is either Roy Huskey or John Palmer on bass.

Yes John Palmer is the bass player in the Kroger shows.
Don Reno was one of the great tenor singers in bluegrass. Red Allen sang lead on the earliest Osborne Brothers recordings. I'm trying to think of a recording with Red singing tenor and can't. There's a photo of Frank Wakefield with John Herald and probably Bob Yellin with the video; they played together in the Greenbriar Boys. Frank joined after Ralph Rinzler left.
Red Allen sang lead but shifted to the tenor part on the duet passages on all his recordings with Frank Wakefield.
Yes - Bob Yellin. I have a similar looking photo ( 2 of them) taken in Montreal by Ron Petronko in 1965 when The Greenbriar Boys , with Fred Weize ( sorry for wrong spelling) appeared at The Fifth Amendment coffee house. Frank and Fred came to our home for dinner one night and we hung out with them their entire time in Montreal. It was great. Gary Eisenkraft owned the place and booked them in there .
reno gave an interviewer an answer to 'what should a banjo player learn?' by simply saying 'learn your fingerboard'. he was my favorite and i remember seeing him live in 1961. as they used to say about johnny smith, 'nobody ever played it better' on the banjo than don reno. maybe faster or louder, but never better.

I believe I read it was it was Roy Huskey but I can't remember where I read it. It's possible it's John Palmer though.

The titles are in the video description below the video. But here they are again. It's called "Mountain Strings". It's basically just a boogie in D like "Bluegrass Stomp". Search for "Bluegrass Stomp" by Jason Skinner. I play a lot of the same stuff.

IMO Red Allen was a better natural tenor singer whereas Don Reno had to shift into head voice to hit high notes on his duets with Red Smiley and Bill Harrell -- and Red Allen and Frank Wakefield were long-time duet partners who blended perfectly. FWIW, I'm pretty sure Reno sings the low part in the trios on "I've Made Up My Mind" and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken."
