  • This video is a compilation of the 10 best things we liked about our 15-day Princess Panama Canal Full-Transit cruise.
The last 2024 Panama Canal full-transit itinerary of the season aboard the Island Princess (before the rainy season comes in full force) was a memorable 15-day cruise for us. There were concerns about the itinerary being modified due to the lack of rain that the region has received the past couple of years, especially since the Island Princess is the largest cruise ship that could do a full-transit. We enjoyed this trip tremendously, and finding the 10 best things about the cruise was a difficult task. Nevertheless, here’s our list of the top 10 things we liked most about our 2024 Island Princess Panama Canal 15-day cruise.
Number 10. The free aviary right at the Cartagena Port. We stumbled upon this on our way back from our excursion. We would have included this in our planning had we known about it. Nonetheless, this is a must-see.
Number 9. Line Dance classes with Rafa from Venezuala. We (and apparently many others) were looking forward to these sessions on every sea day. Rafa made it so fun and easy to learn.
Number 8. Production Shows in the Princess Theater. There were four production shows: ENCORE, The Secret Silk, SPECTACULAR, and Disco. Every one of them was spectacular.
Number 7. Provence Dining Room and Kitchen staff. For the last 11 or 12 days of the cruise, we dined in the Provence Dining Room. We received excellent service from our waiter, Carlos, and the rest of his team. What made this special for me was that every night, there is one or two Filipino dishes that they have prepared especially for us (and others who love Filipino food). The way these dishes were prepared rivaled the best Filipino restaurants I have been to.
Number 6. Huatulco Excursion - Huatulco by Land and Sea. We’ve never heard of Huatulco, Mexico before this trip. The place is beautiful and this particular excursion was a perfect combination of exploring its beauty by land (tour bus) and by sea (catamaran). Huatulco is now our favorite place to visit in Mexico.
Number 5. Gatun Lake Rainforest and its wildlife. Onboard a small motor boat, we explored Gatun Lake and the Gamboa Rainforest Reserve. Among the creatures we saw in their natural habitat are capuchins, howler monkeys, many lizards, long-nosed bats, many varieties of birds, and (of course) crocodiles.
Number 4. San Felipe de Barajas Fort in Cartagena, Colombia. Cartagena was another pleasant surprise for us. Our excursion exposed us to a city of beauty, culture, and history, which one seldom hears about Colombia. We especially loved the visit to the San Felipe de Barajas Fort, enjoying the panoramic views as we climbed up the fortress, explored tunnels, and learn about the history of the city and the country.
Number 3. Mike Tyson, the crocodile. The biggest and most dominant crocodile in the Tarcoles River in Costa Rica was named Mike Tyson by locals. We met Mike during our Jungle Crocodile Safari Tour. The trip from the cruise port to the Tarcoles River was enjoyable, thanks to the natural beauty of Costa Rica, and the wonderful, knowledgeable, and charming tour guide (Adrian) who shared us his expertise on all that is Costa Rica. His knowledge of and ability to spot the wide variety of wildlife during the excursion was spectacular. If you go on this excursion, be sure to look for Adrian.
Number 2. Panama Canal Full Transit - crossing from Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Seeing first-hand this engineering marvel is an experience of a lifetime. From the time the first gates open to enter the first lock to the time the ship gets to its highest level in the Gatun Lake, to the time the last gates of the last lock closes and the ship goes under the Puente Atlantico, the entire experience was truly mesmerizing. If you are going to go on a cruise only once, this should be at the top of your list.
Number 1. The best thing we like about this cruise was the experience of celebrating our 31st anniversary on the Island Princess while at sea. Princess made our day special by displaying our special occasion on public monitors near elevators and other public areas whenever we are close by. And the cake and singing, and the celebration brought by the dining room staff and enjoyed by us and the guests around us would never be forgotten. Thank you, Princess, for making us feel special on our special day.
