Madrid have had a policy, since COVID, that they're going to mostly bring players in on a free OR they're going to get them cheaper because the player will accept nothing less than Real Madrid. Mbappe, Alaba, Rudiger, Camavinga and Guler signings reflect this. That isn't to say they won't spend (like Bellingham), but that was a unique situation that was manufactured for a number of years by the player and cooperating clubs. The Hazard, Jovic, and Mendy summer hurt them bad. They're now just using their big stick to run down contracts OR making clubs sell for less under the fear of the player running down the contract. It's shrewd... but it's good business. United got one over on them by convincing the player. He still may go to Madrid, but United will make money on it if he does.
Since COVID, they had a stadium to finish. Also, RM are in a position where they can use their big stick because what position do they lack? They will get Davies for nothing and probably TAA for nothing. However, they will need to strengthen at CB. Yoro is a big loss.. Saliba is already leaving for Madrid next season
