  • When I was 18 I spend my first holiday outside Europe, in Florida. During those 2 weeks I recorded some radio shows. I remember I recorded 2 "8 o'clock powermixes" on Power96, one by Phil Jones and one by Lazero Mendez. I played them for years on my walkman. Unfortunately I lost the Phil Jones tape. I've copied the DJ Laz tape to my computer and it's really one of the best live mixes I have ever heard,
If I remember correctly he used 6 turntables for this mix. In the 54 minutes he mixed over 60 songs. I have identified almost 40 tracks. A lot of very short fragments have been used, almost impossible to identify.
In the first 15 minutes (as posted here on CZcams) are these songs:
    1 . Teaz 2 Pleaz - I want u
    2 . Beat Club - Security
    3 . Hashim - Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)
    4 . Sa-Fire - Boy, i've been told
5 . Missy Mist - Make it mellow
6 . Dynamix II - Feel the bass
In the full version I've found these extra tracks:
Hashim - We're rocking the planet (beat)
    TKA - X-ray vision
2 Live Crew - Move somethin'
Samantha Fox - Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)
Stevie B - Dreamin' of love
Tramaine Hawkins - Fall down (on me)
    Earth, Wind & Fire - Let's groove
    Heatwave - Boogie nights
Lionel Richie - All night long
Public Enemy - Rebel without a pause
Debbie Gibson - Out of the blue
Bon Jovi - You give love a bad name
    Dino - Summergirls
    2 Live Crew - H,B & C
Taylor Dane - Tell it to my heart
    Information Society - Running
Taylor Dane - Prove your love
Girls talkin sh(*)t - Juice it
    Cybotron - Clear
Afro-Rican - Give it all you got (doggie style)
LA Dream Team - The dream team is in the house
The Voice In Fashion - Give me your love
Vicious Bass - Shake that thang
    JDC - Jealous girls
    Twilight 22 - Electric Kingdom
    MC Shy D - I wanna dance
    Keith Jones - Get retarded
Fresh Celeste & M-4 Sers - Give It All To Me
    JJ Fad - Supersonic
2 Live Crew - Get it girl
The Egyptian Lover - Egypt, Egypt
Beatmaster Clay D & DJ Magic Mike - Rock The House
I hope someone can help me to identify the rest. And I am searching for more Powermixes from that time...
Here you can listen to the complete mix:

I was living in Havana but in the roof of the building where I lived I had my antenna to get the fm band on my recorder player. I was 12 yrs old and american radio stations changed my lifestyle and mind. Never ever again I listened communist radio stations from Cuba. I miss those times when power 96 and Y100 mixed live from different clubs in Miami.

Same here! Grew up in Camaguey, and still remember the antenna I built from scratch to be able to listen to P96! I could say this radio station in the early 90s changed a lot of people’s lives, especially where we come from. It did to me too so I don’t blame you at all!

He could and actually did solo sessions with 6 turntables during his days at Hot 105, he shared his 6 turntable mixes with another DJ who I am close friends with, and do remember visiting my friend at Hot 105 when they first set up shop on Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables Fla, during my visits I did see the Laz spin 6 turntables all by himself without a problem even tho it was a two DJ space, all skills non of the software or computers involved like they have now, had a great mentor in Rosenberg.

Hi there. Elon here. Those were some amazing years. Thanks for posting this wonderful music. I have beautiful memories of being right smack in the middle of the South Florida music scene & radio scene. Was blessed enough to be asked numerous times by Bo Griffin & Tony the Tiger, to voice promo radio commercials when I was a teen, so much fun.

1st Good job to renexoox and Thanks for this upload. Today renexoox you probably would not like Power 96 much. They changed thier programing some and got heavy into modern hip hop that to me is crap. I stopped listening in 2005-06 when that horrible Lucy Lopez started talking on the radio. I started listening in 88 and damn were they awesome!!! 88-92 wow did they play a lot or a ton of Freestyle music and some old school hip hop the best hip hop for me. Then came the dance era mid 90's and they were amazing then as well. Still with the mixes on friday nights and rush hour. They had lots of DJ's Laz was not the only one. All thier mixing DJ's were amazing. Late 90's early 2000's the bad ass dance/House/Trance music was in full swing. Good times:) They got lots of stuff from Europe and some local stuff that was very good. Unfortunately for me at least their programing took a nose dive mid 2000's. But thanks for the memory of the glory days of Power 96! Man did they start Strong in the Miami scene then 1986. Now my thing is XM radio. BPM to get decent dance/house like music. The things Power 96 got away from.

I started listening in 1986 and stopped around the same time as you. If I wanted to hear the same couple of songs played I'd listen to another station. They sold out for sure!

Grew up in Miami, went to Middle school with DJ Laz's little cousin, and then moved to Tampa and his music blew up. Won't forget people in Tampa actually asking if I knew the music by him.
