  • This video was filmed at the headwaters of the Gulkana River in Alaska, just north of Paxson. It has been a dream of mine for years to fish for wild arctic grayling in the interior and it was just as incredible as I always imagined!
We filmed this on a six day, thousand mile trip around the state's highway system. That trip is detailed in a two-part video that you can view on my channel, titled An Alaska Story: Road-Tripping and Fly Fishing Across ALASKA!

I love getting out in the spring on some of those first river fishing trips of the year. Such a great feeling.

Nice fish! It brings back memories when I attended UAF. I'm a proponent of de-barbing hooks. I have moved from Alaska and now live in Hawaii. Here a few of us target bonefish on the flats...my hooks are always de-barbed. This is to release the fish easily but also knowing at some point, with the winds as they are here, I'd have to pull it out of myself eventually. The fish I catch almost always unhook themselves once netted...I take a quick pick, and release them.

Having caught our first king salmon of the year and sea dollies in Seward over the weekend and now back home in Willow we're ready for some grayling action. That particular creek is my wife's favorite place to fly fish for grayling. But my #1 grayling water is the Gulkana. So many outstanding grayling waters ...

If you are ever further north, out in delta junction a river called clear water is ridiculous. You can easily catch 20 grayling over 20inches in an hour or so.

I appreciate it! This video is actually a stand alone video, separate from that Part 1 video I released. Part 2 to that is coming soon! But still feel free to watch that Part One video haha 😉

Very nicely produced! I heard upper Gulkana and apparently is driveable, but can you narrow down the area for an occasional visitor? Thanks!

I have a video somewhere in my "videos" folder where I did a grayling catch and cook, but they are not a fish that I typically like to kill, especially in this particular river. It is so pristine and perfect, and the fish are incredible. I am big on conservation and in systems like this, I believe that the fish need to be taken care of as it is becoming harder and harder to find such perfect ecosystems.
