I have been living in Ghana for the past 10 years from the UK. Although these are challenges in Ghana, I just want to remind everyone Ghana is a developing country, it’s not UK or USA or any other developed country. If you want to move to any African country from the diaspora accept this fact. Once you do you then research and plan well. Every challenge in Ghana is a potential business opportunity. Listening to Gabby reminds me of myself 10 years ago lol. 10 years later there are honest ways around a lot of these challenges you learn as time goes on. Moving to Africa is definitely not for the faint hearted.

Must we always make the excuse that it's a developing country? Other African countries don't behave the way Ghanaians do. Our system is inefficient to feed corrupt government officials... Quite frankly save for the peace ... There is nothing exciting. I did not live in US or Europe, but 6 other African countries... Those countries have their own unique challenges but for a country with our diaspora, level of excellence ( how many Ghanaians are high achievers or earners) we totally suck.
The cost of living is so artificiality high.... We import everything right down to our underwear...
I have been here a year and half and I am not amused or impressed... Very disappointed ...

I see many of you are getting triggered in these comments over nothing. This is not an argument over which country is better. She’s an American, and she’s comparing Ghana to what she knows. People love to romanticize other countries. The reality is that ALL countries have their problems. The perfect country does not exist, and Ghana is no exception. Those of you coming here to point out the US’s flaws are wasting your time because newsflash: Those of us living in the US already know what the problems here are. If you’re going to move to another country, you need to be very realistic about the pros and the cons. I see a lot of videos that only focus on the positives when it comes to moving to Africa. I like to hear about the negatives too, so I can weigh all the facts and decide if moving would be something that interests me. Thank you Gabby for the video. I will be watching part 2.

I loved visiting Ghana, and Sis is right - the bribery and lack of integrity are real. I left my debit card in the ATM at the airport, which was GUARDED by security. I realized the same night I left my card in the machine. When I went to pick up my card the security guard pretended like he couldn't find it, but he eventually gave it to me. Because my card never left the airport and was with security I didn't block my card. The next morning, I received charges for signing up at dating sites. Come to find out the security guards wrote down my banking info and was using it. I reported it to the airport officials and they were fired! Police bribery is disgusting and a stain on the country! Other than that, I had a wonderful time with the locals!!!!

You're not waking up to anything if you still think it's all about entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is the route to freedom, wealth and everlasting happiness as some would say, right? Well, the truth is that it can be for some people. For others, entrepreneurship brings stress, uncertainty, financial pressure and relationship breakdowns. There is no guarantee of success with entrepreneurship. In fact, we know that despite the money, sweat and tears invested in them by their founders, start-ups have alarmingly high failure rates. It’s no wonder, then, that many entrepreneurs struggle with mental health issues. Not every opportunity is worth pursuing especially when the risks outweigh the gains.

Hahaha! Imagine if social media existed during slavery days or Jim Crow, how many Americans would rather go to Ghana over being lynched to death in America... STOP COMPARING GHANA TO AMERICA. America is a white man's country, they literally traveled thousands of miles to captures and enslave people to build America to where it is today, they also stole trillions from Africa to ensure the system is where it is today in America... Also America owes 29trillion dollars in external debt and all the facilities in America are based on credit.
African countries have no access to credit, the world bank and IMF starve Africa of developmental funds!!!
Africa & Ghana is what it is today because of America & Europe... So, no need to be a traitor! You have to understand that it's your job as black people to uplift the countries in Africa. Take money from European countries & go and build Africa. America is not your home & it will never be!!!

She is complaining about things that I know for a fact she faces in the US in one way or another. I am a Ghanaian but I live in the US.
Healthcare: The US has millions of uninsured people who cant afford health insurance. In addition, those with insurance often times do not go to hospitals or postpone medical treatments because of the hefty out of pockets costs. Plus, Medical costs cause a lot of US families to file for bankruptcy. Not sure why you expected to be seen immediately when you would have been expected to wait in a US E.R. too. I have been in US E.R.'s and you will wait if you dont have chest pains and you will out forms unless you came in via ambulance
Bribery: Yes, it's an annoying reality in Ghana. It's probably your only point without a direct similar reality in the US. However, it's a relatively minor inconvenience if you compare it to the experiences of Blacks in the US with the police. You will not be asked for a bribe in the US by the Police, but you will not be racially profiled by the police in Ghana. A Ghanaian police officer will not approach you with preconceived bias, your life well not be in danger. Paying a bribe can in fact sometimes be advantageous given what a fine or real penalty should have been. But in all I am against bribes. On the flip side, the US is known for it's annoying expectation of tips. You tip your waiter, food delivery, uber driver, valet, bell boy, doorman, tour guide etc. Its a matter of perception, both are annoying, although bribes have the effect of corrupting the system so not embracing them. But they are both annoying.
Entertainment: Without question, the US offers a wider range of options. However, it seems you want to live the US experience outside of the US. Ghana is Ghana, Ghanaians have developed our own forms of entertainment and leisure. You seem to think US entertainment is the objective standard. Perhaps Ghanaians dont view jumping off cliffs or airplanes as entertaining, although I know its there.
Food: A lot of Americans would travel half way across the world and end up eating at a McDonald's or Applebees. I have never understood that. If I travel to Thailand, I dont want to eat French Fries.
So, why travel to Ghana to eat hamburgers or "US" foods?
In short, you dont have a mindset of one seeking to LIVE in another country. You have the mindset suitable for short visits in all inclusive resorts.

      @py20 Před 4 lety +67

@@GabbyMack I don't see anything in his response that shows he is "offended" at all. I think he is simply saying that the problems you've cited happen in the US but in a different form. I live in both countries and I agree with him. Are your observations true? Yes! All of them. Those bribery issues do happen and they are annoying, to say the least. The "whom you know" syndrome is prevalent, especially in official circles, and it is irritating! But let's not kid ourselves -- nepotism, cronyism and corruption reflect humanity's flaws and weaknesses and they manifest in people everywhere. The difference is that the West has stronger institutions compared to the developing world and do a better job at holding those vices in check. Nonetheless, they happen daily even in the West!
Ghana's weak institutions and lax enforcement of rules and regulations governing official acts are part of the challenges we all must work on to facilitate her growth and development . We can't accept the status quo or excuse it! And no, you do nothing wrong by pointing them out. But we must each move beyond complaining to challenge the status quo, while contributing to ongoing efforts to improve the situation. That said, I do think it is unrealistic for anyone living in the West to expect the same or similar systems and standards he or she is used to in a place like Ghana. Ghana is not America and that's what I got from Papaboy's comments, and I think they are valid!
Sister, I'm glad you are educating people about Ghana and I commend you. But let's not be too quick to dismiss the observations of others and assume they are attacking us, when all they may be doing is giving their alternate viewpoints.

@@GabbyMack I have taken no personal offense whatsoever. You named the video in part " Ugly Truths" I merely pointed out that some of the truths you listed are truths everywhere, and in particular in the US. I also pointed out unrealistic and unfair expectations you had about receiving immediate care. When have you received immediate care in an American E.R. without being in an imminently deadly condition? So, why is that an ugly truth about Ghana but you dont think so about the US. That shows inconsistency in your application of standards and expectations.
Why would you also list, as an ugly truth the fact that the most dominant foods in Ghana are Ghanaian foods? Is that not the case in most Homogenious societies?
In what country are immigration issues ever simple and easy? Have you gone through the immigration process in the US? Have you ever sought information regarding your immigration status from the USCIS?
So, in the end, most of your complaints are realities of human societies, with the exception of the day to day bribery.
You should also be mindful that your video is based on anecdotes, your PERSONAL experiences, that you have elevated to ugly truths about Ghana. Meanwhile, it could be that it's only ugly truths about YOUR experience in Ghana.

No, as a matter of fact-it makes NO sense. If she says she has family there and spends a significant amount of time there, why then would you even you ask why she would even think about moving someplace “unknown” and where she “possibly have no family”?!? I experienced a similar situation here in Accra, Ghana, where small/young boys were on a sports dating Website at an Internet cafe interacting with old white men from Europe. The owner and I had a heated conversation about the morality of his allowing these kids to be exploited using his business and equipment. It all came down to money for him. I was disgusted, left and never returned to the business after witnessing the same scenario on a second visit. There are many poorer Ghanaians who do not act in this manner, and yet he condoned the boys doing that at his establishment.

Take plenty of money with you to pay bribes and you will have no agency to go and complain about that. Are you ready to deal with a poor healthcare system that could cost you your life for a simple illness? What is happening with the Black race in the Western world? I am of African descend born in Latin America and I am now living in the U.S. and I have never had any problems in the U.S. and I am not willing to leave the U.S. to return to my country of origin in Latin America which resembles a lot of the things that this lady mentioned on this video. You have no idea what you will experience in a third world country. I have heard the same thing that she mentioned about Ghana by Nigerians living in the U.S. about their own country and the Nigerians that I have met don't complain about life in the U.S. and 100% of them are successful professionals and entrepreneurs in the U.S. and they don't even mention about going back to Nigeria. Most of the Nigerians geniuses are in England and in the U.S. not in Nigeria. I have only been back to my country of origin two times in the 39 years that I have been living here in the U.S. I have no plans to even go visit it because my own relatives back home have told me not to bother to go back and visit. It is worst than when I left back in 1981. I guarantee you that after a couple of months in Africa you'll be back in the U.S. My parents went back home after their retirement and they could only tolerate the poor services in all aspects for a year and they came back to the U.S. after a year and don't plan to go back at all. If one stays out of trouble in the U.S. and obey the laws one should have zero problems living in the U.S. I am not rich and the healthcare system in the U.S. is far better than that of the so called third world. I am just another hardworking person who has to wake up every morning and go to work and I have medical insurance through my employer and for many years I had no medical insurance and I got excellent healthcare in the County hospitals in California which is better than the healthcare system than any country in Latin America and Africa. Africa could be better as well as Latin America, but corruption is king in those two continents and that hinders both regions from providing a better quality of life to their people. The U.S. is not perfect, but among the imperfects it is the best country in the world.

However none of the things that you shared will make me change my mind about mother Africa. Yes it is different from America for a number of reasons, if I could count the ways it would be at least 20 reasons why Africa is in the position it is in America is in the position she is. But at the end of the day I plan on going with a humble heart and open mind willing to learn the traditions in the cultures and wanting to do lots of missionary work on top of opening and running my own business. I pray that I don’t run into any health problems when I get there... I don't even know how much it cost and funny enough many of the hospital staff are Nigerians and Ghanaians. I'm even scared about the healthcare system in the US let alone Nigeria or Ghana. The UK National Health Service paid for my mother ( rest her soul) who was on dialysis to visit my sister in Australia and have all her treatment while she was there over a month and my sister's trip to the countryside, with my niece as my niece was diagnosed with cancer. The UK system considers trips abroad or the UK as a positive impact for overall wellbeing. They are way past individuals thinking about the cost of operations or giving birth. Although, I do have a major complaint against the NHS too.

I find your point agreeable. I think people are not just reacting to this video in isolation but have contextualized it based on many videos she has made expressing similar sentiments. It seems she just grabs a whip and just unleashes it on Ghana. The continent already is swimming against a tidal wave of bad publicity and she only seems interested in making it worse. Just compare the content of her positives against negatives videos on the country. Perhaps people would appreciate it if she had done just a single video juxtaposing the ills in USA to those in Ghana. What's worse is that much of what she says is exaggerated. Plus, I suspect given the option, people would gleefully part with a few cedis to the police than to live in constant trepidation of the police. On food, wow!! People from every corner of the world come and just enjoy the food. Meals like red red, waakye, fufu and groundnut soup are favourites. Guess what, food in Ghana has been ranked as one of the most nutritious in the world. Ain't no way we are going to apologise feeding you healthful meals.
For entertainment, there are options of hiking, paragliding, beaches, water falls, canopy walks, national parks. Of course you just have to drive to get to those destinations just like any other country. How much fun can you have in a country where you're racially profiled when you enter a shop or any space. Compare that to a place where you look like everybody else and feel welcome.
On health many Ghanaians actually find herbal remedies more efficacious than orthodox medicine. For eg when it comes to bone fractures, stroke, people prefer herbal medicine because it has been bequeathed over generations. The health insurance also greatly subsidises bills.
I think your choice of title is problematic; the foundation of the video was too aggressive. Your earlier video also gave people context.
      My humble opinion.

Your expectations in the hospital sounded unreasonable. The doctors may have been treating another patient when you entered and weren’t available to quickly see your friend. Also it would be dangerous to give your friend painkillers or anything before they’ve diagnosed the source of the pain or reviewed the health information derived from those forms. Those forms ask important health questions. Emergency rooms in America also demand you complete the forms before you see a doctor and several hours often go by as you suffer in pain. I speak from experience.

I beg to differ from what our sister is saying regarding the issue of bribery in Ghana. Well the biggest form of bribery in the world is in America and they’re called lobbyists. It’s just that this is done very professionally by people in suits and ties with their briefcase 💼. Whatever vices you may find in Africa, the western world does the worst but in a more subtle and professional way than in Ghana. There’s nothing new under the sun. We can all come together to fight evil as well as crimes everywhere in the world and make the world a better place starting in our homes and country of origin🙏🏿

Please visit the country and stay for a while before you attempt to compare it to the US. What Gabby is saying is accurate. Like you said, you have paperwork, fees, insurance, etc when leasing an apartment in the US. In Ghana, you have to do footwork to find an apartment bc many don’t have websites, they you need to often times are asked to pay 1 year of rent upfront, but the kicker is you have to make sure you pay the right person. People will impersonate the property manager and if you pay the wrong person, you are just at a loss. People need to know things like this upfront so they can figure how to prevent getting taking advantage of in a new country and how to navigate challenges.

  • @Manu_III
    @Manu_III Před 4 lety +11

Hey! First video I see from you because I'm trying to gather information about Ghana for a trip in the near future and eventually move there.
As a quick background about me before you might read this, I'm French originally from the Central Africa Republic, now living in Quebec City Canada. Canada is the 5th country where I live (moving by myself not knowing anyone).
I understand where some of your frustrations come from, but through all of these "tips", there is something that you definitely don't explain and that is : do not compare the US or Europe to a developing country. The system in almost every aspect is gonna be different.
    - Paperwork can be very very complicated and frustrating even if you have like me a French passport that usually makes things "easier"ish. I have applied for visas (student, work, permanent residency) in South Africa, Canada and the US, and for each of them, it's been a pain in the a**. So yeah, that's lesson one about the visas/permit, and that is even if you research everything you might need to make it easier.
    - Health... Yeah comparing won't help here, while Europe, the US and basically, developed countries, and are way advanced in science and technology, it's not the case in Africa. Being advanced and having a system that has grown for years with a lot of money, is not the same than when you don't. I've been to an emergency in the US, France, South Africa and Canada and it was all the same - waiting, feeling like it'd only be faster if you'd have had freshly cut your leg or something like that. Sucks everywhere, and when we get there, no matter where we are, we feel like our emergency is The emergency. Well, medical workers learn how to not show their stress even though there's a crazy rush behind them behind the scenes.... To me, South Africa has a Way better health care system than in the Quebec State in Canada.... Yeah. Learn about where you go..
    - Activities.... Same thing, not developed enough, don't compare, go more like to socialize, try to see if you can help build/teach/share you're knowledge to make it better (not a second US lol...), explore / travel around the country instead of looking for the closest bowling alley.
Finally, bribery sucks... Unfortunately, it happens because of a lot of corruption in many countries. That's why approaching these problems should be more like "yeah guys there are things that you are not used to, never compare a developing country on certain aspects to yours, try to get in contact with someone who is already there, from where you're from that moved there to maybe have a better understanding."
Understanding the whys behind 90% of what you've said would be constructive. Because right now in certain parts of Africa, it is only in that constructive and understand, and not comparing mindset, that little by little, we'll build a better Africa (not second America or Europe..).
Sorry if that sounded arsh, but I Can't sit and listen to the way you're projecting these tips without the actual understanding and constructive way to look for solutions or just research more before moving somewhere (for me, it takes me at least a year lol).
    Salut!

Let me just say; that as an African-American Man, I have been to Ghana on several occasions. I've even leased land there. All I can say is; Ghana is a DEVELOPING NATION, it IS NOT a super-power like the US. So if you go there looking for the "American experience", you are going to be sorrowfully disappointed. It's the same way IN ALL developing Nations! You must think of it as America was, when it was a developing nation. IT'S THE SAME DAMN WAY!! After all; if you don't think that bribery doesn't happen in the US, I feel sorry for you. Just try to go to see your local, state or national representatives, EVEN WITH AN APPOINTMENT and see just how many people will walk in HOURS after you, and get in before you. Hell; just before COVID-19, I bribed a woman to get me to see my doctor ahaed of everyone else, so that I could make a business appointment on time!
In short; it wasn't to long ago, that black folks right here in the US, couldn't even go to a hospital. They HAD to medicate at home. So when you go to a developing nation ANY WHERE IN THE WORLD, expect to experience America back in the 1940's or so, when there was no health-care insurance and there was no welfare system to fall back on, or when you had to bride fireman to fight your fire for you, or when policeman would "shake you down" to keep from taking you to jail FOR NOTHING. Watch some old black and white movies or something, just don't think you're gonna have the American experience in ANY developing nation, Because the things that happen in developing nations, still happen in the US. You just don't see it until it shows up on 'TMZ" or "American Greed". Otherwise; stay home and experience the same ole, same ole.

I have visited Ghana and its as beautiful as Jamaica where I was born. We have similar issues in Jamaica and are making great strides to improve the ease of doing business. Most of our public services are becoming digitised and whilst there is still corruption, you can now legitimtely pay upfront for an express service that actually delivers within a reasonable time. There is nothing stopping Ghana from addressing its own challenges with improving the ease of doing business except for leadership. Improving efficiency in the delivery of public services would immediately add several billions dollars per year to GDP which would translate into more schools, better hospitals and overall better health and wellbeing. The double effect is that better health and wellbeing also improve productivity. Ghanaians must want that for themselves. It is not beyond attainable. Rwanda is doing just that with a smaller economy than Ghana. It's more about leadership than Ghana being a developing country.

On health issue you get good healthcare but you have to pay. Its is true that customer service is really poor. Talking about drivers licence, what you pay is to fast track not bribery. If I want a passport in England quickly I pay extra more for it just like Ghana. Opening up an account in England as a none residence is not possible unless you are the sheikh of Dubai same as what you just explained about Ghana. Each country is unique shaped by its culture or economic factors. Ghana is not America, so you could have said something like “things to be aware of” but UGLY?
In American Restaurants, Tips are expected after service. You are giving service according to the perceived expected TIP (bribe). The Service level is giving according to your race. Africa is the ultimate next level of bribery, I remember having been arrested on the road 8 times in a day by police in Libreville in Gaboon, the same cop asked for bribery in the morning and in the evening, I told him :"I already gave you this morning." He answered "I need to feed twice a day, mister, and believe me you dont want to visit spend the night in our police station... "
In Nigeria, even at the police frontier at the airport of Port Harcourt the cops asked me money or they will keep my passeport untill I missed my plane, but I had no money to pay and the didn t want to believe me, I was so tired and pissed off, hopefully I saw a pilote of Air France and yelled for help in French, it scared the cops who endly let me take my flight....
The fact is African governments dont even regularly pay their cops... so bribery is the way to make money for a living. Same for most of government employees in Africa. In Africa bribery is not a crime, it is the system.

Thank you for this information. Based on some of the comments, its sad to see that regardless of where we are geographically we as a people can't appreciate truth, accountability, and integrity. Don't be hard on this Sister this information is necessary some people need to know this before traveling. We're spoiled in America compared to many places and some will be disappointed when they see the difference in lifestyle.

As a Kenyan who moved away to live in the U.S (mostly due to career-reasons), I was curious as to how people navigated the difficult government systems in place, in most African countries. Thank you for sharing because it's important for people to know the cons as well and weigh them against the pros in order to make a decision about moving. What you touched on is very similar in Kenya as well, even though things like getting a passport or drivers license have dramatically improved now. As for the healthcare system part, that could happen in the U.S too, people complain about this all the time (the not being seen right away part), & U.S healthcare is expensive as hell too.
