Flying the DREADED Ryanair 737MAX 8-200 and… loving it!?

  • In this video trip report we take a ride on the dreaded, infamous Ryanair 737MAX 8-200 from Stockholm Arlanda to Skellefteå in the north of Sweden. And we find that we… kind of like it. In fact it’s a very pleasant flight. Of course the plane is empty, we have a row to ourselves, and we’re in the front row bulkhead (seat 2F), so this is the best possible outcome. But still, it goes to show that you need not necessarily fear the ultra high density MAX. We’ve got lots of lovely views on the way up and a nice landing in Skellefteå.

    Fun fact:
    People make jokes about Ryan’s hard landings but there is no airline in Europe that compares to Ryanair regarding their safety record.
    Been in operation for more than 35 years and they do more than 2500 flight per day and they never had a single casualty. Probably best safety record in the word as well.

      What happens is that as Ryanair has so many planes, it is possible that one in several makes a hard landing ... And if it is in a large airport where there are enough people, at least one of them will record it and upload it. And the people will only pay attention to the bad landing.

    It's actually genius how Ryanair made their company live in people's head rent free. I never in my life saw a Ryanair TV ad, they don't need any of that, when people hear the name ryanair they immediately think of cheap flights and the masses of Europe flock to their website to buy tickets. No wonder they are wiping the floor with the bigger national airlines in terms of competition. Gotta love that❤

    We're flying multiple times a year with Ryanair, and sometimes with Wizz'air. Honestly, the landing depends of the weather conditions and the pilot in charge, so not Ryanair as a company. Besides the respect of the Priority boarding which they sometimes ignore, we never had issues. In my last 2 flights the crew also called for a doctor, but we could make it to our destination. Knowing we pay less for the tickets than other company's, and knowing the crew is also getting paid by the onboard sales, I always consume a drink and some snack as a way to support them.

    I might be a bit biased because I’m Irish but I really appreciate Ryanair. I personally have never encountered an issue with them and they have enabled me to travel a lot more than I would have if flying with e.g. Aer Lingus. They might have the occasional hard landing but I will take it!

      I remember being on a Ryanair flight back to Dublin from Liverpool. Between match-goers and stag-weekenders, the plane was packed with drunken clowns, giving the attendants a hard time. But they all took it in good humour, some giving as good as they got. I have no beef with Ryanair at all, though Michael O'Leary tends to rub people the wrong way with his antics. He's like a heel manager in wrestling, there to generate heat and get people talking. Ultimately it puts bums on seats.

I’m from an Irish background and I’m proud of Ryanair. To think they are operating domestic flights in far distant parts of Europe. I’ve flown on Ryanair many times. Great fares and service, rarely late, only one hard landing. Thanks for this and the marvellous Greenland videos.

  • @AttaboyIII
    @AttaboyIII Před rokem +19

    I fly RyanAir regularly, on a route they compete for with Aer Lingus (BHX-DUB).
    The biggest thing they have going for them is their ruthless efficiency. They get you checked in fast, on the plane fast, off the plane fast, and get your bags to you fast on the other side. Whilst Aer Lingus use a nicer terminal and have slightly nicer seats, they still ask you to pay for coffee and the whole experience is just less efficient, often leaving you waiting in long queues for ceck-in, waiting for bags, boarding, deboarding etc.
    The flight I often get is the MAX8-200 and it's quiet, comfortable and the legroom is acceptable. I often pay extra for Seat 2A as this gets you 3m of legroom and no bulkhead in front of you, plus a window seat with (weirdly) direct aisle access. Best seat on the plane.
    I often choose RyanAir over the Aer Lingus simply for this reason. They make the whole travel process a whole lot smoother.

    As ex-cabin crew, the SAS-branded deposit box looks familiar to me. I believe it would be where the money/documents would be dropped into using the barcode secure document envelopes. After disembarking as crew, we would seal up the charity collection money, then drop off at one of these deposit boxes at LHR, LGW, and MAN. There was another deposit bank that would accept our duty-free cash and print out a little receipt. Kinda like an ATM!!

    197 seats is a lot to cram into a fuselage the size of the 737-800. When people are packed that densely into such a small space it creates discomfort and often breeds conflict. That's why I always say that even though FR is one of the safest airlines out there, flying with them could be hazardous to your mental health. I can put up with FR on a sub-1 hour flight, e.g. LPL-DUB, but I avoid them like the plague on anything longer. But it turns out if you actually fly them, it's really not like that (and even the hard landings thing is just a special kind of running joke at this point). Meanwhile the referenced dread is among most people who hear about the Max 8-200 specifically, and how dense they've made it. But like in the case of the hate, when you actually fly it, you realize it's really not so bad. As we did!

    The toilets at the rear are very narrow, and the legroom is poor if you're 6 foot. Why don't they make the rear of the seat from soft plastics for the poor knees.

    @bwc1976 Před rokem +1

    Not really a fan of bulkhead window seats because there's nowhere to put your carry-on in front of you, but an aisle seat would be tolerable I guess. How much extra did you have to pay to get the bulkhead though? From what I've seen, on these airlines by the time you add all the things you need onto the base fare, it ends up costing as much or more than a real airline anyway.

      It was all included in their top level fare which as mentioned in the video was about $130 USD. Even adding all the bells and whistles they still tend to come out cheaper in Sweden because "full service" SAS charges you for everything like seats and bags too!

    Got to be honest i want to defend Ryanair lol no nonsense airline, keep within the rules and your all good. Whilst there policies appear strict actually when your at the gate the staff aren't really bothered. As for the hard landings.... To be fair to the pilots it's somewhat part of there training, firm landing ensure good braking action etc, plus they hate go-around cos go-around cost money🤣
    The 737 is notoriously hard to land compared to a320 for example. Faster approach speeds, smaller landing gear struts. And Ryanair first officers tend to be pretty new to the game also
    Anyway that's my two pennies worth lol

    I also appreciate Ryanair, and find the Max8/200 really comfortable. The quiet engines makes the aircraft noticeably better than the old 800s. I know that a lot of people love to hate them probably just because they think it makes appear them as cool 'a cut above' people 😂

    Ahh, that was sweet ride! Beautiful plane, so it's a budget LCC, that's what people want to pay, right? Ryanair does pretty damn fine by the look of it, such success and growth isn't made by mediocre aviation. Looking forward to the BRA ATR run...one of the most environmentally conciouse airlines, flying a super-efficient turboprop!

    Ryanair's 737 are way more comfortable than ITA's 320s. The only thing stopping me from flying them is that it is often at very inconvenient airports, especially for me since I live in Paris

    I hate Boeing 737’s, I usually have anxiety during flights but its way higher whenever I’m on a B737. I know they aren’t that bad and are a workhorse of aviation with good safety record however, I Lost trust in Boeing as a company when it surfaced that they clearly are gravitating towards profit more than safety. The aircraft model is a big factor when buying airline tickets.

  • @wotajared
    @wotajared Před rokem

    I've had from the best to the worst when flying Ryanair. Overall positive given the price differentiation.
    Have taken FR for short hops around the Baltic, and about 3 of the flights were in the Max. Actually one GBG-STO I got 1st row randomly assigned which was super nice considering that reserving that seat would have cost more than the ticket and nice views of the cockpit during boarding. Huge glass avionics.
    As of 198 seats. It's nice for low season hops in these kind of routes where I could shuffle to window seats a few times. Less nice in full flights.
    And for once that I spent what I consider a lot for a FR flight (200€), I had some dumb luck: Turns out the usual flight with the airline I tend to chose when coming back from home had a technical incident and returned to base. In the FR flight I just slept and strangely the 737 seating seemed more roomy than the A320 of the competitor.

    Whats the point fo doing a review like this then choosing the bulkhead? Makes no sense to test a high density aircraft then choosing the row with most legroom.

  • @christopherstrydom7239

    The new interiors look stunning, but the seats are a lot more uncomfortable than older versions.
