Short Guy Experience - Does Height Matter in Hawaii? (feat. Jennen Shoes)

  • Since I'm a relatively short guy, I thought I'd talk about what life is like as a short guy in Hawaii. Is it bad? How was it being short growing up? How was the teasing? Dating?
Hawaii has a lot of short people. With the average height for men being 5'9" and 5'3" for women, it's no wonder Hawaii is often considered the shortest state. Hawaii has a high Asian population and most of that population is short.
I also review a pair of Jennen elevator shoes that were sent to me for review purposes. I wasn't paid to say anything in the video and the opinions expressed in this video are my own. If you're interested in the shoes I talk about in this video, here is a non-affiliate link - www.jennenshoes.com.au/collec...

    Chris,
Never thought anything on your height and it doesn't matter to the local people that have aunties uncles, cousins and friends at that height. It's as you stated, the individual being comfortable being themselves at whatever height, weight, abilities and liking themself. I had plenty of guys older, younger that were shorter than me and nobody picked on them, as being that era, they were willing to fight it out. Its intimidation, control and power. They want to intimidate, humiliate, control their control over the person without consequences. Good thing, you and family gave you what you needed to handle the situations in life that will continue to exist and plague people for a long time to come. As you've demonstrated it, it is not the size of the person, but the emotional capacity of the heart that matters. Good topic.

you nailed it regarding bullies. They will go for the vulnerable. Wrestling is a great sport for smaller people. Cool to see your attitude regarding a subject that could be touchy for some people. Your discussion of the elevator shoes was fun. I wrestled 98lb in highschool . I didn't stop growing until I was 22 years old and reached 5'6". When My son joined the Army he grew 2 inches when he went to boot camp. He is the tallest in the family. I am very secure now but growing up I was so insecure for many reasons that being short really bothered me.

I love your comment about the "Hawaii" walk. When I first moved up here I had a lot of trouble with static electricity. The PA at the health center was from Maui and her first question to me was, Do you walk like you do at home? (Hawaii). LOL Exactly that! I drag my heels and build up a ton of electricity. I was always shortest one too and stood at the front of the line at school. Now that I am a few years older it just doesn't matter and some times it makes it easier to move through crowds.

I'm about that size and I remember being in a crowd of Japanese tourists on the strip in Waikiki, watching this really good portrait artist (Korean guy) and I felt like I was too tall and blocking the view. I’ve always dreamed of living in Hawaii and hope one day I will be able to. But I’m curious, I’m 5’11.5” (so basically 6’) and I’m a girl. I realize I’m tall everywhere besides Northern Europe. But where I currently live, I’ve been teased a lot for my height, told I look like a man based on my height etc and I’m wondering if being so tall in a state like Hawaii where people are shorter would come with criticism? Or even limit dating options? I personally don’t mind dating guys a bit shorter than myself but I know a lot of guys don’t like taller girls. Anyway I’d love the perspective from someone who lives in Hawaii or has lived there!

Funny, I never gave height of my friends much thought. I'm 6'2". So many of them are Filipino, or of other Asian backgrounds, so I guess I just understood that, usually, shorter height just came with the territory for them. What was more important to me was how they treated me and what kind of people they were. Superficial things such as height were far less important. BTW, I came to realize that I tended to prefer girls who were much shorter relative to my height. Perhaps, that's because I'm more attracted to Asian girls, but in general, I prefer petite girls, which so many Asian ladies are. In short (no pun intended), height isn't that big a deal and shouldn't be made one.

Maybe you should say how many inches the shoes makes you taller by? From the looks of it maybe an inch.
You should also post the pic of you with the wild hair that you couldn’t style back then đŸ€Ł

I believe the shoes add about 2 inches, possibly more with the insert. 😁 Too shame about the hair. lol

I was born in Hawaii and I was lucky enough to grow to 5’10 making me taller than my parents and siblings. But the only reason why I'm this tall is because I have an extra Y chromosome (XYY)

I still remember this: my first time in 1999...I saw this person walking with their family. I go "holy moly that person is huge". I walk closer, just because, and I notice "oops, that's the mom" Lol. She had to be 6 feet tall, like a linebacker build. This was by Moana Surfrider on Kalakaua; I was walking on the other side of the street by the ABC store.
I also do remember feeling huge when I went, and I'm not. 6 feet, 195 lbs. Gym rat.

You could probably add an inch with yoga stretching your spine. But, no need to do so.

I was bullied until a growth spurt in my senior year. Maybe there is less bullying in HA than on the mainland. There are a lot of hugh people in Hawai'i.
Height and muscles were required by women in the '60s.

I'm sure there is bullying here as well, but it may be more race-based.

I hate how I am shorter then the average guy in Hawaii. I wish my mom never gave birth to me. Why couldn't my dad date a taller woman?
