75 Million for Van Dijk at the time seemed a lot but seeing what happened to Maguire who went for 80 Million the following year you'd have to say the Van Dijk deal was an absolute bargain.
I don't get the maguire hate. He has had one bad season but was amazing the season before and took England to a FINAL!
Everyone going insane against Maguire for one reason - cos he is English.

I like how everything Carragher said has unfolded perfectly
Is mind blowing how spot on 🎯🎯he was with almost everything and not just Liverpool predictions by the way even other team as well.
Everything ? Nah but a lot for sure
I mean he’s hardly gonna sit there and slander the signing and say it’s a bad one is he. He probably said shaqiri was a world class signing as well but u only see the ones he got right
@@benhardcastle2305 no he slandered Shaqiri for his work rate. Also spot on
Virgil downed tools and left Southampton 4 years ago now.. and we're still here.
Prior to his signing, liverpool had conceded 25 goals in the first half of that prem season. Immediately after he signed, they conceded just 13 for the rest of the season (whilst also making the CL final...). Then in his first full season they conceded just 22 goals over the entire 38 game season and had the best defensive record in the league (whilst also winning the CL...). Immediate impact like that is rare for any player, but it's ridiculously rare for a centre back.
It's not that surprising that when he was injured for entire season last year, Liverpool's point total dropped by 30...
For me, he is their best player.
he organised the whole defense
And his first full season he hd Alisson to work with behind and Fabinho in front too. A complete defensive spine within 7 months
@@loyal4theway159 not just the defence, he is the catalyst for a lot of attacks, there aren't many centre halfs in the world who play that cross field diagnol pass like virgil, the amount of goals that come from that ability, and his presence at corners and set pieces, you really do realise why there was such a drop off. Hence why Jurgen bought Konate, under Virgils teaching that lad will be a monster, you can see it already

Nah Allison is miles more important than Virg, Allison saves us from losing and dropping points with world class saves week in week out.
I remember when he was injured, the fullbacks were playing bad as well. One of the reason Liverpool fullbacks can attack so high is due to VVD.
@@randymarshole You could replace allison with a number of other goalkeepers and Liverpool would only be a little bit worse whereas there is no one who can replace van dijk, he is an amazing player and the best cb in the world by far
@@jackcarter05 Theres a reason why there rarely are highlights of VVDs defending. Its because hes always in the right spot. He has at least two more senses that enable him to make it look easy.
@@jackcarter05 theres no need to bring one down just to up the other. The fact is that without these two liverpool wouldn't have CL and PL trophies.
Dont discount our keeper. There are countless times when he was a game changer. Without him we would've been knocked out by Barca. Without his header and saves this season we would definitely not be having this title challenge conversation in the first place, much less the Quad talk.
And after 4 years, he is the best cb itw. Even after a career threatening injury, he came back and instantly made a huge impact and solidified the defense along with matip. PL is out of hands, but CL is up for grabs and 3 trophies would cap a fantastic season for the reds

Story of Jurgen Klopp's two most expensive signings when he faced them:
VVD: The main CB for Southampton who was beaten 6-1 by Liverpool with a team consisting of Sturridge, Origi, Jordan Ibe, Joe Allen, Moreno etc..
Alisson: Roma's 1st choice who conceded 5 at Anfield and a total of 7 goals over 2 legs when faced Liverpool in a UCL semi final
If you are a new footbal fan, let me tell you about a ritual. The Saints have an annual ritual of getting completely washed off with a nice shower of 9-0 or 7-0 or at least 6. It's this purification process you see, regardless of who they field as players.

Normally you buy a big defender to dominate in the air but they move like a bus backing up on the ground. Van Dijk wins everything in the air, is quicker than most attackers, he passes the ball like a midfielder and he's a leader. He's a freak of nature. The best defender I've seen in my lifetime.

It really hasn’t, Van Dijk has x1 Premier League x1 UCL & x1 FIFA Club World Cup and he’s been at liverpool since 2017. 3 trophies in 7 years is terrible especially since Liverpool at one point were almost on paper with City for two years.

Thing about virgil is he also makes those around him better.

You can't beat him with strength, You can't bear him for pace, you can't beat him in the air and trying to dribble past him is usually met with failure. Best Liverpool signing.
He was the best centre back in the league even at southampton😂 everybody just overlooked him because he wasn’t top 4.
People desperately try and argue he wasn't, even now, to attempt to justify their argument that he's only had "one good season". I watched him in person a few times at St Mary's back then and was in awe of him. He was the best CB in the league by a mile, just better at every aspect of defending with far better physical attributes than the defenders who were considered the best at the time, think Alderweireld and Vertonghen had the most hype, Koscielny was always talked up, Kompany I guess was still up there but slowing down and Luiz and Cahill made TOTY, which is quite funny looking back, though Chelsea did have a very solid defence (more down to the manager, quite clearly). Not one of them could combine the speed, ability in the air and on the ball, strength, leadership and calmness that van Dijk does, some of them didn't even have 2 or 3 of those attributes let alone all of them. Cheat code of a CB.
Yeah he was, I saw it and I'm no genius
