- I always thought it was a bold idea to make a Freeware video in 2022, so here we are. I think it's quite the opposite of the recent World Machine Edition announcement, especially in quality.

Played through this version of the game yesterday, I get that they didn’t have much time to make the game since it was for a contest, but still it was just so cursed I loved it.
The beds sitting out in the middle of nowhere, the completely nonsensical item placement, Niko switching between talking like a kid and an adult, the out of place bridges in the Glen, the complete lack of anything to do in the Refuge, the conversations that lack any breathing room, everything about the final sequence, the Barrens being twice as long as the rest of the game combined, it was just so perfectly cursed and I couldn’t stop myself from laughing the whole time.
The 2016 remake is definitely a slight improvement to say the least
When i was playing os14 barrens were like despair bc i couldnt find the bubble pool or sponge and kept walking in circles for like an hour
But I like how niko just absorbs alula and how you dont need to put seed in the planter to get maize reborn, you only add water and its done.

Immediately after that I got a clash of clans ad and the opening sound made everything go away

Some context. If you closed the game when you were not supposed to, then a error message would pop up saying that you killed Niko

Something about bad end that wasn't mentioned in the video:
Bad end occurs, when you quit the game. It implies, that whenever you leave Niko straight up dies.
That's why in the remake Steam description it says you're safe to quit the game.
Also, even tho the freeware version is short, there is a way to quit the game without getting the bad ending - by sleeping!
That feature got into remake as well, but confused and frustrated remake players, since for them there was no reason to crash the game when sleeping (except there was a lore reason, explained in the solstice).
The reason being, to run the World Machine there should be a real operator, Niko, the only real person in that world. So when he goes unconscious, that's why the game crashes. Although after solstice the World Machine realises it was tamed, and no longer needs anyone to work.
Crashing the game also happens so those that play the game like it was intended in freeware version gets an achievement, too!

01:24 I definitely feel like I remember some element of RNG to George in the original Freeware version as well, although the randomisation probably worked differently in the original since it wasn't intended to be replayed.
it depended on the name. I heard so elsewhere, but i dont know how it worked. all i know is that the rng depended on "god"s name.

I've heard that old versions of RPG maker being used to make story only games (aka no combat) would often make interesting use of the RPG character stats they can't turned off to hint some of the story progression. Does the 2014 Oneshot do that as well? Anyway, nowadays we just don't see games utilizing the wrong engine make it such apparent anymore... Often the only way to know that the game is made using RPG maker (without checking the files) nowadays is that it has really clucky input handling.
Oneshot (Freeware) was made using RPG Maker 2003, and the remake was made with RPG Maker XP
Freeware uses hero equipment, special skills (notes), Niko, PlayerName, Alula heroes (all same class stats etc but last 2 dont know skills and cant equip nikos items), battle anumations (question, sweating etc), conditions (death)
I wish the bad ending still existed in the remake
Maybe like if you deleted your save file before you finished the game? (So like how to do Solstice but if you did it too early)

Even with little time they made a very good game, I was very happy at the time since they were going to do a remake.
This "Sprites of the same size" is a very bad thing in the Rpg maker 2003 version, which means that you don't have that much variety in size, of course, besides being very limited.
Even so, this version is still good despite some problems.
Don't forget the game cannot be played again if failed AT ALL.
It would be a cool to see a mod on Steam where it brings freeware features to the Steam version for extended edition

While you showed it, you forgot to point out the stats. I don't know but any of them are, or why all of them are one except for a couple which are two and zero respectively, but they are a nice touch that add a lot of depth and gameplay.
