Today, we get to try out the brand new iZotope RX 8! We have been using the RX 7 since it came out, and are very excited to try out the new features they have added to the latest update! From Music Rebalance, to De-Hum, and De-Verb, there are tons of great features in this plugin.
One of the big upgrades in the RX 8, and one of the things I really wanted to try is the Music Rebalance. This gives you the ability to go in and separate elements out. You can separate out the vocals, the bass, the percussion, and more! This is a great learning tool, and would be great for learning a song! If you are a singer, for example, you can separate out all the elements and then mute the vocal so you can sing along with your favourite songs, and then you now have a soloed vocal as well, so you can learn all the parts!
Another new feature is the Guitar De-Noiser. This removes buzz and noise from bass and guitar parts. It is a really great feature for an acoustic or electric guitar part that had ultra purcussive elements in it from the pick hitting the strings, for example.
There are tons of other amazing features available in the RX 8, including De-Hum, De-Verb, and many more! If you are mastering anything, this is going to be an amazing tool. Think of the amount of work you could get just from people going back and giving you old cassettes, and mini discs, and old CDs, and all different kinds of recordings. The fact that you can take it and clean it up and then give it back to people is amazing. It makes me want to go back through all of my cassettes from when I was a kid and just clean them up!

Well i use it to restore old live recordings from glass plates, old 2 track tapes (Telefunken M15) and newer but also already bad going DAT tapes. It is a great tool and i am using is since version 2 or so at my work but also having RX7 for my own work as a recording an mixing engineer to clean stuff up.

Hey Warren, great review. I'd use it to clean up old 4 track cassette / md stuff. It didn't bother me too much, the hiss and general crapness of the recording because I was only sketching out demo songs to work on later or take to a band. Some might actually be 'cleanable'. Ideally I'd try to do it track by track but synching might be tricky due to the "elastic" nature of tape and the inconsistencies in the player transport mechanism. Could probably make it more listenable for other ears. Thanks for the review.

There have been times when a piece of software appears to have found a way of messing with fabric of reality in a way that can only be descibed as the handiwork of the devil. I'll never forget the look of shock and amazement when my friend and I discovered how Melodyne could split an audio file of a chord sequence into it's component notes, albeit sometimes a little 'clunky'. Well, this is another one of those moments, with RX8. It may still be a bit 'clunky' in places, but it is still a work of wonder, and it too, messes with the fabric of reality in a way that I never thought would ever happen - wow! You know those thriller movies, where the forensics team uses some specialist dude his skills to pull the 'masking' from a piece of audio to get the hidden information within, and you're watching and think, 'bah! That's just imaginative sci-fi'. Well, it looks like it's here (gulp!)

Been using RX since RX nothing. Besides Music Rebalance: The declip is almost as magical as the re-balance. Eliminated a lawnmower on an interview with Spectral De-noise (going to go back and try Music Rebalance). Nicely salvaged a clipped live vocal. Great on plosives though the automated tool still needs help in extreme cases. De-crackle and de-click can make a decent vinyl record sound like a CD which I like. Used de-bleed to correct some bad micing of a live event. And much much more.
Only downside is that RX 8 is my 7th upgrade to the standard version. Even though each upgrade is reasonably price they add up over 13 years.

I am working as an audio engineer and using this tool from version 2 to restore old classical recordings from the 50’s and on and all kinds of problems and it is getting better and better every version. Love the spectral denoise and the declick it helped me a lot to do a fine job. Lately i had to record a sort of theater thing with talking, music and interviews for a podcast, but it was also a theater kind of show with public and the theater had only cardioid headsets. And those are a hell for this talk kind of things because all things like hairs or a blouse that moves along the headset or part of the microphone cord creates noise cracks, pops etc. And the dialogue isolate of rx7 saved my butt there couple of times. And off course i could do it orherway with ither headsets, but it was a very tight budget and technicians from the theater so it was not possible but RX saved it. I love RX i tis expensive but worth it for me, however the new features are not for me and it seems the ones i use most often did not change so i think i will skip this one and see what 9 brings, at least for now... so for me i tis a tool that i use daily. Specially on classical music it has so much different dynamics that you have to be aware of artifacts and let is sound very clean it is so fragile but RX does do a fantastic job for years for me.

Since Sound Forge went a bit rubbish (coincidentally around the time Sony sold it to Magix!) I've switched to RX 7 Standard for destructive wave editing. The tools for fixing vocals work equally well on spoken voice for video narration. It's incredible value for money, particularly if you get it when it's on sale. The Music Rebalance is machine learning-powered black magic and a lot of fun for picking apart tracks you love.

Wow. On that first track, "other" managed to pull out the rhythm guitar part. The second guitar part lost a touch of high end with the de-noise, but not tragically. Almost like de-essing a vocal. As someone who deals mostly with commercial radio and vocal production, cleaning speech is really good, quite natural.
Preservation and restoration of archival audio, especially speech, is important. There are entire libraries of irreplaceable material that could and should be restored from ancient analog sources and digitized, as we learned from the UMG fire that destroyed so many priceless music master tapes. These tools are a major step in keeping history intact. I'd love to hear what it would do with the audio from the Apollo 11 moon landing or the recordings of the radio broadcasts of D-Day, for example.

Warren, have you tried Steinberg Spectralayers Pro 7? They've introduced exactly the same feature. I bought it for £256 recently because I'm mixing a 2 CD live album. It really helps to control spill on vocals and other tracks. It gives very similar results to RX8. I'm guessing the AI inference technology has probably been developed in combination behind the scenes. It really is game changing!
Oh, and with Spectralayers, you can go EVEN DEEPER! You can split each extracted stem into "Transients", "Tonal" and "Noise" elements. This allows you to rebalance each stem if you want. So, if the drum kit sounds a bit swooshy, you can reduce the noise element and perhaps increase the transient part. You can extract each track and import into your DAW and apply insert effects to each stem/element. It's so powerful. I'll have to make a video showing it in action.

    • @JohnDeCarteretElvis
      @JohnDeCarteretElvis Před 3 lety +1

I used Spectralayers while it was owned by Sony and before I used RX. It was good when used properly; but was extremley dangerous when not. I stopped using it when it was sold to Magix and since Steinberg have purchased it, it was improved slightly. However it is not as focused as RX8 Advanced and also appears to havesome of it's more advanced features removed.
The only advantage I feel Spectralayers has over RX is it's ability to copy things to layers and seperate them. This way you can copy what you've removed and take back anything you might have over done. And again to seperate. However RX8 can work on full surround recordings, enabling you to work on each seperately, rather than having to first seperate them without using layers. Outside of layers Spectralayers falls far short of what RX8 can do when it comes to audio restoration. It is rather like using a sledge hammer instead of a fine needle. It greats far more artifacts than RX which are far more audible.
It is a great tool, but RX8 is a fantastic tool and has ne advancements added in each release. Whereas Spectrallayers has hardly advanced since version 3. It has actually taken a step back, having had tools either removed or handicapped. But that could have been deliberate in order to make it an easier task to restore audio, rather than blitx everything on the same audio frequencey. It did help me start out and enable me to have a far greater understanding of how to use RX when I made the move. I have no regreats and wouldn't go back now.

So can we expect a new line of "Music minus One" albums to be released for the learning musician? Hard not to skip those LP's when you were a drummer in a house beside a turntable trying to learn the Samba on the old Silver Tone Blue sparkle kit. I can still smell that kit when I unboxed it at 12 years old, mostly the glue smell really. I never thought we would be recording at home with this kind of equipment then, 4 tracks used 1" tape and weren't cheap. Izotope have never let me down yet, this can open up small home studios to a new income repairing music, like those jam tapes you and your friends made in the '70s. That's impressive.

The amount of people who asked for a software which would isolate the vocal track versus the drums was staggering.. and GC employees would laugh and say its not possible. Now isotope is laughing. It may not be "perfect" but it is unbelievable. People throw out the "mind blown" term too casually.. but it blew my mind. I wonder if there is a certain x-factor that can be diminished in rock tracks by using this. We love Neve ore's and SSL compressors for very subtle reasons. On my last record, I would go through and, albeit in a reasonably calculated / subtle way - using "learn" etc.. I would de-noise all guitar and bass tracks. I did a lot with a Strat and my Vox AC-15 (noisey). I wonder if i was raking some x-factor or grit away. perhaps not. Oh and i just noticed your next video .... on my way there!

I've used RX7 to remove noise from acoustic guitar tracks with the vocal tools. It actually does pretty well. I would like the extra features of RX8, but the upgrade is more expensive than the difference is worth, at least right now. I'm sure they will discount it (hopefully soon for RX7 and/or bundle owners). The intro price to upgrade from 7 to 8 is almost insulting.
