What are the Pandora papers?

- The Pandora papers are the the latest - and largest in terms of data volume - in a series of major leaks of financial data, and reveal how some of the world's richest people are using hidden offshore tax havens. So, how does the offshore world actually work? Is it always illegal? And why is this all such a big deal? The Guardian's Luke Harding explains

“Look here, don’t look there.”
Exactly. What'll probably end up happening eventually with this kind of info is crackdown on the people that these journalists don't like (Guardian defended the Blair's in their article because they are cut from the same cloth as their owners, neoliberal globalists) and will also start pushing for tax harmony that only centralizes even further government control, will likely just tighten the net around the poor and middle classes whilst the elites build in just another system to avoid the new measures in plain sight and no one will do or say anything about it.

Each country has a different tax system. So, depending on the country your money is in, you can pay more or less tax.
Modern day gangsters without the violence. These are people that are creating wealth for themselves while the rest of the world is taxed to the point of starvation.
So the solution is to take away the taxes that lead to starvation
If you are going to take the moral highground here then perhaps aim your sights at those who impose income tax on us in the first place. Taxation is immoral

@@jebremocampo9194 just a young working class brit, who realises that the state stealing someone's wealth by the means of a monopoly on violence is deeply deeply disturbing.
Oh no, there definitely is violence- just out of sight, out of mind, off in Sri Lanka or somewhere these people are paying children to work, often with unliveable earnings and the threat of being out on the street or violence... But to the type of person replying to this comment- that's not theft- it's only theft if someone is taxed to provide for people in need...
Anyone surprised? I was more shocked when I saw a spider in the sink this morning.

@@PHlophe Glass and paper, textbook stuff.
This has never been a secret and, as the people who use these type of tax avoidance schemes are the very same people who make up laws relating to tax and tax avoidance schemes, there's (legally) no issue here.
Therein lies the real scandal. While the middle class can't avoid tax unless they turn to illegal means and the poor get thrown the scraps, the wealthy pay a far, far smaller percentage of their wealth in taxes, yet that is all legal. Worse, of course, that Bezos's space escapades are treated with awe by the media, yet those forced to scrape together a living are vilified.

Just like the Panama papers, nothing will be done.
Don't be silly, we've just had over 3 minutes of the most in-depth reporting for decades, the amount of detail they released about the Pandora papers was stunning. I'm simply glad they didn't pad-out the video with barely relevant information about buying a company in Singapore, as that would have been a shame. Hold tight...it's going to be quite a ride!!!! xD
Actually, Panama only holds 0,27% of the offshores companies around the world, and after the release of the "Panama Papers" the country closed 50% of those companies, and included more strict measures, so actually something was done.
@@jenniferfigueroa1006 Maybe the 50% that were closed down simply moved their money to the other 50% of the companies that kept going. That's what a cynic would suggest btw....not me personally. :D
@@thesunreport ...oh how I wish I had your rather naive optimism. Nothing will get done about this. Its happened since Adam was a lad. The ones at the top can simply silence anyone who threatens their position at the top of the shitheap

Something I have been in search for quite sometime is a connection with somebody that goes beyond vanity. It's very hard to do in this day and age. People can be, somewhat very superficial.
On my quest to achieve this I have learnt a lot about human nature. It seems to me that those who are not given traits such as beauty or being wealthy are some of the nicest, kindest and generous people. While the "gorgeous" and well off seem to be the most arrogant and greedy people out there.
Of course that's not to say there aren't beautiful kind people out there. I've been in the process of change for a while now and I have made some decent changes but don't you just hate it when people can't let go of your past mistakes.
I saw your profile and it intrigued me. I wanted to learn more about who you are and what type of path you would like on in life. Can we talk?
Nothing that we didn't already know
As usual no one ever goes to jail from that elite club
Why would they? They kept their own things safe. You should NOT ask why they can avoid tax but rather why the rest of us cannot avoid it? Eradicate tax? Or have a flat 5% tax rate. That way no one would try to leave.

One, why people are surprised. Two, of course nothing will happen.
They are all crooks- face it. I went to a tax haven on vacation with a guy who was a grandson of a politician some years ago. It was Nassau Bahamas. While there he said he had to go to the bank . Why? His whole family had been hiding money there for 3 generations started by dear old Grandpa who got hooked up when he got up in Government. Then his dad died unexpectedly (aneurysm) and he got into government. I lost touch but he is probably living on the family estate in Bahamas never having paid tax in his entire life with a government pension the size of King Kong.
It's actually very easy to find offshore investments and expensive possessions, if there is a will and a safe place to record, investigate and change, where necessary. Those are the challenges. Too many are turning blind-eyes, acquiescing and jumping on board; those are the secondary problems What would the world be like if everyone complied???

Labour Tony Blair promised he would make the rich pay their fair share of tax to help the worker pay less national insurance and yet he broke that promise, he bought a house to avoid paying stamp duty which was a win win situation for seller as they never paid capital gains tax.

If as the gentleman say _"[some] people may have legitimate (and lawful) reasons why they hide their information"_ and that _"not everybody in the Pandora papers are criminals"_ I honestly have to ask the question why is this important? If people are doing these things lawfully, why all the big hoopla; and, why wasn't the distinction between the criminals and the non-criminals more clearly made instead of lumping all these things together?
The one's who are doing it lawfully are taking advantage of some loopholes. These loopholes need to be fixed. That's the most important takeaway from these papers for me.
Because they are taking money out of the system of which could be used for public social programs that solve society's issues. Like poverty, lack of access to things like food, safe to drink water, education, healthcare, etc.
Basically, even if it's legal, it's still immoral.

You incorrectly described near the end of the video that tax avoidance was wrong. Earlier you had made the correct distinction: tax avoidance - every prudent person’s duty to minimise tax in legal manner ; tax evasion - to illegally evade your obligation to pay tax
This is a clear distinction for monies earned and taxed within one legal jurisdiction. Tax avoidance should be classified as tax evasion when done through overseas tax havens.
