I feel like what she means by “ancient dreams in a modern land” is that in the past people felt so inspired to keep evolving in all aspects of life, tech, fashion etc. but we as a society, media etc (especially at the time she was writing this) were in our regurgitation era. Nothing was new, everything was reused & people feel like the American dream is dead. now we are just living in routine and no longer breaking barriers. We as a society looked behind the curtain and didn’t like who the wizard really was but we haven’t been able to do anything about it. We just know it’s happening. that why we always want to go home, to a time when the curtain was still closed because ignorance is bliss.

I think this song is about existence, how existence is way more than material aspects, or psychological, existence is both, and none at the same time, these are the questions that makes our bran tilt, we can’t fully explain the concept of existence and consciousness, and that’s why the music is so “wtfffl” bc this is the exactly same feeling that the concepts of the lyrics makes us feel. Also Marina is graduated in Psychology so she has some really deep thoughts inside her head😂

I'm living for the MARINA content; do check out this entire album, but beware: The first half is about society and humans in general, and the second half starting with Pandora's Box is moreso about Marina herself. Some hated that, and were suggesting that it would've been more fitting to make the album a 2 parter, like Love+Fear, but honestly, ADiAML is a no skipper; they're all very nice songs, and I'm not usually a fan of ballads but my Gods, Highly Emotional People is literally an important song to me and many others (and it's more stripped back, mostly piano and synth pads), Pandora's Box is again slower but it's so beautiful and I love it, ILYbILMM is more like the production of Purge The Poison, Flowers is a beautiful allegory, with the main theme being a marathon run, and the final track, Goodbye (very fitting) is about her saying goodbye to a past her.
Now, the first half is really political, and it's very much left-wing leaning. Her lyrics are more upfront and on the nose, unlike her first 3 albums in which she covered the meanings behind metaphors amd allegories, but even I as a newer gen Marina fan really like ADiAML; I get it: the poltical songs seem like meaningless poltical rambling but I don't think of it like that; they follow a theme and stick to it, and I think most of her statements are true (women making up only one quarter of the government, men being in power)
While yes, her songwriting seems to have declined, it's fully written by her, and I really enjoy it nonetheless. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, just don't be a dick about it. I hope you'll enjoy this album, it's really short, but there are 3 deluxe tracks to hopefully check out as well 👀 🩵
