This is so precious. Can be applied to anything in life. Very relatable about teachers, feelings and understanding what triggers anxiety and how to overcome this.

It is so awesome that you guys are talking about this. I have never clicked on a video as fast as I did this one. I’m a violinist and suffer from DEBILITATING performance anxiety, and not just performing solo pieces, but orchestra as well. I literally become paralyzed. In university I felt so worthless. Playing in the second violin section wasn’t so bad on my nerves. However, during my senior year I was placed in the first violin section...ON THE OUTSIDE. I was so nervous during concerts. I felt so exposed. Master classes in chamber were the worst. I was in tears after each one, because I knew that I could play well. It was nerves holding me back. I felt so helpless. I even started taking beta blockers out of desperation. I didn’t know what else to do. They helped with the physical symptoms, but I felt detached from the music. It was like being in a trance, just going through the motions. Also, I don’t like taking pills so I stopped. I don’t trust pharmaceuticals. More musicians need to talk about this with each other. It helps to know you’re not alone.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with such openness and honesty. We're chatting about this topic again this week in a live 'Mini Session' on Zoom with Laura van der Heijden. More info here: www.benedettifoundation.org/students. - BF Team

6:30 God bless you for your vulnerability. It sometimes feels burdensome to me having a great depth of feelings, perhaps it's just part of the artistic temperament. BTW, "I bowed, they clapped & they paid me" sounds like the best gig of my life.

There are performance enhancement techniques that are really helpful with E.M.D.R. And Brainspotting if you fine a good therapist. There is nothing wrong if you get performance anxiety yet there are wonderful therapeutic interventions.

(1)The advice ‘ take ten deep breaths’ first.. (2)exploring safely ! Wim Hof “extended hyperventilating + cold wash/ shower “ this last week confirming what I know in (3)Qigong (“sophisticated breathing like yoga “).. we need to up 0xygen stored in air reservoir at bottom of lungs; we need the confidence to conquer with more testosterone.... so shock like cold shower handled need (4) daily practice ( with the breathing GRADUALLY.. NO catching of colds !...). also (5)borrow from other players..their mastery ( including students expectant eyes and trust )..Those I have found helpful.

Eastern sophistication in breathing abdominally [yoga, taiji太極, qigong氣功] (Elena)...+balancing pen/s on pads of index finger/s have helped myself and my students who adopted this to MONITOR HOW LONGER slow BREATHS could calm us down to FUNCTIONAL AWARENESS (of nervousness lowering in front of our eyes for confidence )WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT .....reinforced WITH CONSTANT TRAINING ....to multitask and , from our UNIQUE self..bring into reality [incarnate] colourful,play-ing character-istic sound (Rachel) with RELATIVELY greater comfort (Laura)..that transforms us (Tom and Nicky) to EMBRACING REALITY in front of the audience... from the nervous mess to one who sings with the wisdom of breathing to the better place they came to applaud !?! Try to control that spiral of over .....to appropriate CNS and parasympathetic nervous systems balancing by this breathing way and see if it works for you... and students .... towards the central turn upwards in the spiral.... Otherwise, try Wim Hof breathing + cold shower (and learn to relax after the first gasp).. increasing gradually to ice water wash/bath...[ Tummo Meditation !?! where Tibetan and Himalayan Yogis could generate heat against the cold , pneumonia .... It is working for me against Corona Corvid 19 with lowering immune system at 75 years of age so far, ha ha ! ]
