    In this video watch a futon being assembled before your very eyes. Here you will see why authentic, Japanese futon are superior to anything on the market.
    FutonBedsfromJapan.com sells premium hand-crafted futons made by a true futon master in his small, family-fun business in Kochi, Japan.
    - Top Quality Available: Our master-crafted 100% authentic Japanese futons are hand-made by a small family-owned business in Kochi, Japan.
    - Lightweight, Compact and Easy to Store: Our traditional Japanese futons contain natural cotton filling and no heavy, bulky polyurethane foam pads.
    - Easy Care & Easy Clean: Our futons can be hand-washed & hung out to dry or taken to a dry cleaner that has an industrial sized washer/dryer.
    - A Much Healthier Choice: Our futons contain no synthetic foams/polyesters which quickly compress & get uncomfortable while also trapping moisture which becomes an incubator for mold/mildew.
    - 5 to 7 Years of Total Comfort! Futons provide amazing comfort while supporting your back. Our futons have NO polyurethane foam pads which quickly compress and get lumpy & uncomfortable
    If you're interested in getting a futon, discover why there really is nothing better on the market than an authentic Japanese made futon--the real thing!

    It's funny to me that the interior construction is so simple, just layer after layer of cotton batting, and somehow Japanese futon beds have proven better than any western mattress I've ever slept on. With the really thick ones, you don't even need a pillow. Truly amazing.

    • @Futonbedsfromjapan1
      @Futonbedsfromjapan1  Před rokem +10

      It is actually deceptively simple. Over the generations futon masters have learned how to install cotton so that it sheds moisture properly and re-fluff's better. Also in traditional Japanese futon the bulk of the cotton is placed where your bodyweight is and they taper out towards the edges. This keeps the futon light for proper hanging care, and also helps the futon shed moisture. There are actually many nuanced differences that make Japanese futon superior to what of often found on the market. (However, of course, futon masters are rarely eager to share their own personal tricks to making great futon.) Also, one extremely important component to our exceptional futon is extremely high grade cotton. Most futon makers -- even here in Japan -- are unwilling to use this grade of cotton due to its high cost.

While cotton shikibuton do compress over time, they can be softened by adding cushioning underneath if needed. You can make them as soft or firm as you wish based on the surface you place them on. We have searched online and have not found any that are truly authentic despite their claims of "Japanese style" futon (which should be a hint when they say "style"). We are very confident that you will not find truly authentic Japanese shikibuton on Amazon or similar. We are truly a family run business with 3rd & 4th generation craftspersons making our product. Our product is made in Kochi, Japan and we are still shipping abroad, not problem.

    How much does the double futon weigh when all finished. The site says 15 pounds of padding for the double 4.5" bed. --- some other American site says 40 pounds for a double 3". How can that be? -- I need to learn what is going on that is different or if there is a mistake. Thank you so much for paying attention to this.

    • @Futonbedsfromjapan1
      @Futonbedsfromjapan1  Před 3 lety +3

      Hello Dreamervanroom,
      Thank you for taking the time to post this.
      Our completed Double shikibuton is about 9.5 kg/20 lbs. I do not know what the dimensions of the other company's "Double" is, however, regardless it shouldn't weight 40 lbs. That is a poorly made shikibuton. Too much cotton installed in the wrong way makes for a Shikibuton the is too heavy to properly hang and cotton that cannot shed moisture well. In the west it is not uncommon to see shikibuton that are 6-8 inches thick. They operate under the mistaken idea that thicker cotton/futon makes it more comfortable. This only results in the shikibuton remaining perpetually moist inside which causes it to mat and never able for the cotton to re-fluff and it becomes uncomfortable quickly. This is why many westerners hold a misconception that futon are uncomfortable. With a correctly made shikibuton, if you find you need additional cushioning, it is best to place more cushioning underneath the shikibuton, not attempt to stuff more inside the shikibuton. I hope this is helpful.

    • @Futonbedsfromjapan1
      @Futonbedsfromjapan1  Před 5 lety +2

      It might seem so, however, there is actually A LOT more that goes into making a shikibuton than is apparent in this video. Master Ike and his family have spent generations honing their craft. There is an entire "futon" making industry in the USA -- and in the west (and east!) -- that every day prove that it isn't as easy as it looks ... as they still don't get it right. ;)

      As is so often proven, you definitely get what you pay for. These are hand-made and take a lot of time to manufacture. Nobody in the Japanese traditional futon business is getting rich! lol!! It is time-consuming and quite back-breaking work. That said, Master Ike and his family take extreme pride in their work and their product -- it is much more than just the money to them. For their family it has been a way of life for 3 generations.

      Hello Kyo Singapore, thank you for your interest and for taking the time to comment. Like western beds, traditional futon are covered with white cotton covers. These can be easily removed and washed. The futon itself isn't washed, but instead is typically hung out in the sun and fresh air. • @Futonbedsfromjapan1
      @Futonbedsfromjapan1  Před 6 lety +6

      That is correct. However, there is the advantage with a futon that you can regularly hang them over a banister outside in the sun. UV rays do act a disinfectant and also kill bedbugs/micro organisms that live in all bedding. This is not so easy to do with a bed. :)

      Hello Michael, Thank you for your interest and your good question. It is important that you use a cover on your futon. Covers can be removed and washed, but you cannot do this with your futon. Covers protect your shikibuton.

      @Futonbedsfromjapan1  Před 5 lety

      @@michaelsutton8783 If you're used to sleeping with a pillow then you'll definitely want to continue to do so. The surface underneath your futon is important and can have a big impact on the comfort of your shikibuton. Tatami mats are great, but not strictly required. They're more forgiving than hard floors, but don't have a lot of cushioning value. For more information on this, please check out this post on our website's blog here: tatami.futonbedsfromjapan.com

    What is the logic for the tatami matt

    • @Futonbedsfromjapan1
      @Futonbedsfromjapan1  Před 5 lety +11

      Hello Dierre, Tatami mats are traditional flooring in Japanese houses. However, it isn't typically throughout the entire house and in new houses you often only find it in bedrooms or a special tea room. Very modern houses don't even have tatami in bedrooms. You don't absolutely need tatami if you want to sleep on a futon. Tatami are actually quite firm and hard, but their a lot softer than a hard wood floor or tile. Carpet is typically softer than tatami. These days outside of Japan most tatami you find are not all that authentic as they are usually found with a stiff polyethylene foam inside instead of compressed rice straw. The reason for this is they are much lighter for shipping and also, they're easier & cheaper to get through customs as they require less paper work and verification. These foam filled tatami do have a natural grass goza (igusa) mat on outside however and look quite "authentic". However, they're estimated to last roughly 10 years (if not walked on with shoes and kept dry), whereas a quality authentic tatami mat should last 40+ years if properly taken care of.
      One key thing about authentic tatami. The natural scent of tatami are believed to have a therapeutic quality that helps you to relax and sleep. When it is humid or rainy this scent fills your house which many people like (and for me personally has a very nostalgic sense), however, the foam-filled tatami will lose this smell quite quickly (because only the outer mat is real grass) never to return again. This is good or bad depending upon whether you like a natural grassy scent.
      Do you have to have tatami if you use futon? No. For more information about the best surfaces underneath your futon, check out this blog post on our website here: tatami.futonbedsfromjapan.com

    How many layers of cotton per shikibuton?

    • @Futonbedsfromjapan1
      @Futonbedsfromjapan1  Před 2 lety

      This varies depending upon the size and location on the futon. Traditional Japanese futon have the bulk of the cotton where your main body-weight will be. For this reason they are thicker in the center and taper towards the edges. Usually you there are 14-18 layers, however, this too can vary as during the cotton combing process you may get thicker or thinner layers depending upon the humidity at the time of combing. Cotton installed is based on overall cotton weight and not number of layers, per se. While we do have a typical pattern we use when installing cotton, this is why futon making is an art and not a science. During the process of installing the cotton, if the feel isn't right and thickness isn't where it should be, more layers may be added to make it how it needs to properly be. All that said, the overall cotton weight is fairly uniform in the production process. Each size of shikibuton is quite close to the same narrow weight range. (Hopefully that all makes sense.)

      @Futonbedsfromjapan1  Před 2 lety +1

      Great question. If you've spent a lifetime sleeping on soft western style beds it may take a couple of weeks to adjust. That said, customers with back issues or those that just prefer a more firm bed do not typically have issues with adjusting. You can also add a trifold bad or other cushioning beneath if you prefer a softer bed.
