He needs to be shown a *lot* of grace initially, I did not like the aftermath of the bite scene if he kills you. It's up to you whether you think he deserves the love, but he certainly needs it, a lot. And if you give it to him, you can make him feel compassion again.
I think it is worth it for the storyline which is probably what made the character so beloved.
He is quite literally a stray cat
