First I was upset why would Jesus be on a party and allow his disciples to drink alcohol. Then I got even more upset when he participated in a miracle to make more wine. But then when the father of the bride got sober everything came into place. He taught them that alcoholic wine is bad for them NOT by preaching, but by tasting the pure wine of life that doesn’t make your brain blind but awake instead. It’s genius plus the metaphor you mentioned. Sadly a lot of Christians will still see it as a blasphemy. :-/

Can you see the hesitation of Jesus? To me, it represented the conflict Jesus must have had, knowing that once he began His formal miracles the clock would begin for His march toward the Cross -- and His love for His earthly mother -- who meant well but could not have imagined what was to follow. The Chosen offers each of us so many 'ah-ha' moments that can change our perspective on everyday life. What an insightful and wonderful work God is doing through this series. Thank you, Dallas and the wonderful team, for your faithfulness to the Scriptures and the gentle way you weave reality into the Truth.

I have always noticed that when Jesus does a mioracle like this, he does it full-out. Because not only did He turn the water into wine, but He turned it into the finest wine the guests ever had. Also, the turning of water into wine was a foreshadowing of the Last Supper when He would take the cup of wine and tell His disciples "Take and drink, for this is my blood."

    • @endofscene
      @endofscene Před 3 lety +14

It has been suggested this is symbolic: Jesus turned the Purification Water (used by Jews to purify themselves) into Wine ("blood of the new covenant") which is drunk by Christians to affirm their salvation through Jesus' sacrifice.
Remember, this wedding happened "On the third day" (John 2:1).

@Celia And Favour You have the details, but your angle is skewed. It was inhumane. It was gory. It was darkness. The death of Christ on the cross was a terrible event, but who put him there? Humans and their selfishness. Who sent him? It was unanimous. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit agreed that the only way to save humans from eternal separation was to die for them. So the Son did. Why do we eat the blood that is real flesh and wine that is real blood? We are what we eat. Therefore, to consume Christ we become more like him. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. If you do not eat of the bread of heaven you will have no life in you.
The reality of the flesh of Christ transcends the corporeal sense of flesh. Just as the accidents of the bread remain, so too does the flesh aspect have another element to it. That element is true life itself. To be separate from God is to not have life. That is why all things are born dying from the very start. They are separated from the source of absolute being. The source all being is sustained by. That is what we call God.

@@lavander961 You have said it. This the first miracle that Jesus performed since He agreed to it 18 years prior. When Jesus was 12 years old He was lost in Jerusalem. Mary and Joseph were frantic. He was found teaching at the Temple. Mary was frantic as a mother would be and acted as such. He was asked what were you doing there. His reply was doing the works of my Father. Mary still frantic said don't you ever do that again. Those are very powerful words. Jesus/God realized what just happened. He put undue stress on His mother. Jesus agreed. I don't think people realized what just happened. Mary just put God in His place. Honor thy mother and father. So now Jesus would have to not do the works until a later date. Jesus was the dutiful son for 18 years. No missing years. It wasn't until this wedding that His mother released Him from His vow. It's beautiful. Jesus could have ignored His mother but didn't. That shows alot about what God really is. Imagine telling the Messiah what to do?

Think about this. 6 earthen vessels for purification. Man was created on the 6th day. Through the blood of Jesus we are purified of our sins and made clean.
We are 60-70% water. Jesus turns water into wine. In Acts 2 the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and all whom were in the upper room. People thought they were drunk on wine. They were filled with the Holy Spirit.
In Mark 2:22 Jesus teaches that you can't put new wine in old wine skins or the skins burst. Jesus makes us new again. Born again.
In Psalm 23 David wrote how the Lord fills his cup to over flowing. Jesus talks about giving us life giving water. The Holy Spirit.
I was reading John last week and this jumped out at me and I thought about this scene and how Dallas Jenkins and cast portrayed this scene and God gave me a deep understanding of this.
The Holy Spirit gives us new wine, heaven's wine and fills us to overflowing.

Purely loved the background symbolism dialogue delivered by Thaddaeus during the miracle scene performed by Jesus. It just lifts the scene to a whole new level and explains the significance of this miracle in a very very different way. Just brilliant way of presenting. Loved the series :) This Chosen team are surely doing something different and making us to get used to different.

I watched the chosen live stream of this episode. There is so much detail packed into this scene, Thaddeus' voice-over about cutting stone, Jesus' reflection in the water, the off-stage laughter of the servants, the father of the bride who is transformed, Mary and Jesus exchanging looks while she mouths thank you. We are also introduced to Thomas, a person who pays attention to detail, much like Matthew but in a different way. I paid it forward and am looking forward to season 2.

I know this may come across as a bit off topic considering the scene, but is anyone else in love with the aesthetics of the show?
Every time I watch this scene and the scene where Jesus is talking to Eden in her kitchen, I always think, "Man I would love to have a house that looked like that!". There's just something about the ambiance that is created in those scenes. From the clothing, to the design of the houses...even the gentle flickering of the candlelight.
It seems so peaceful and inviting.

The ending of the scene with the bride's father, Abner, bringing himself to humility was superbly done. Bravo. Outstanding writing and directing brothers...... No condemnation to the 3 dislikes but I ask: are your ears deaf to the script? I truly have a concern in the Spirit over you.

I like the "I am ready" because it signified that He was ready for the clock to start and His path to be laid out. He knew His timing. The miracle was not for the sake of turning water into wine in this interpretation but for the people to honor GOD.

The Chief Water or Master of the Banquet said that the bridegroom and the bride families have chosen to serve the best wine last which is not customary as it is serve first and when everybody has drunk freely, poor wine or cheap stuff is served as nobody will notice it. What I learned from this is God only gives us the best if we are only willing to wait.

  • @admiralbob77

This is where the Philip Saville film (Gospel of John) seems to understand this passage so much better than this series does. In the Johannine account, Jesus does not interact with the water - he performs the miracle entirely by directing others. He tells the servants to fill 6 stone jars of water, then tells them to draw out from the water, and take it to the steward. Only at the moment of tasting is it proclaimed to be the good wine - it has up to now only been described as water. The miracle is tied to the actions Jesus has directed people to take, and to the perceptions they have of what he has done. Jesus' words have power - he does not do what he does like Gandalf or a dime store wizard, but through what he commands to be.

I never understood this miracle and why Christ would have chosen to do this, just honoring and obeying his mother made no sense. But the way this story is told, the embarrassment his friends, his mother's friends would have suffered, and the timing of beginning his ministry just finally makes sense of the whole thing! Especially with Thaddeus talking about cutting into stone and how that ties in. Thank you! I loved this episode! And I didn't realize the caterer was Thomas, the apostle, until Jesus named him, so that was such a lovely shock and really made it even better!!
