What Your Handwriting Might Say About You

  • They say the eyes are the window to the soul. But your handwriting just might be too! There's even a whole science that studies it - graphology. By the way, criminal investigators often work with them. And here’s how they figure out if someone tells a lie - there are drastic changes in their handwriting style throughout a text.
Anyway, graphologists determine different personality traits just by looking at the small details of someone's handwriting. Wanna find out yours? Then take a piece of paper and scribble any sentence on it. Put down your signature, too.

    SUMMARY:
    - If your letters are on the big side it means that you’re pretty outgoing. You love being around people and being the center of attention. Small letters show that you’re shy when it comes to interacting with people.
    - If your letters tend to slant to the right, you’re deeply attached to your family and friends. Left-slanted writing says that you’re rather reserved and don’t express your emotions much.
    - Noticeably wide spacing between words indicates that you prefer to keep your distance from people. Narrow word spacing shows that a person wants emotional closeness with others.
    - If the spacing between letters is average, then you’re friendly and outgoing by nature and can make friends with almost anyone. Letters that are far away from each other reflect an easy-going personality.
    - If you connect letters while writing, then you have good logical skills. Disconnected letters reveal a defensive nature. But you have a good intuition which helps you avoid unpleasant situations.
    - Light pressure shows that you’re very sensitive and empathetic. Writing with heavy pressure is typical for people who are committed to close people and activities.
    - If you prefer using print letters then others most likely see you as a really confident person. Writing in cursive can indicate that a person loves doing everything perfect and following rules.
    - Pointed letters can be a sign that the person is smart and curious. Rounded letters are common for creative people and kind-hearted people.
    - If your signature is legible and sharp, you’re a strong person and don’t like to pretend. If your signature is illegible, you value privacy and you’re hard to read and understand.
    - If your writing is excessively forceful, it might be a sign of high blood pressure. Tiny cramped letters with a varying slant that are hard to read might indicate some psychological or brain problems.

I agree, for the most part, on these comparisons. I write in different styles depending on what I'm writing though, and who or what the purpose is for. Documents at work I write in print, so they can be legible for others. Letters to friends or family are in cursive. Sticky notes to myself are sloppy, somewhat. What does that say about a person if they preface their handwriting style?

Very interesting. I've used this for over 30 years. I love writing. Some things seem a little contradictory, and this also indicates contradictions in our personalities, which is normal. Certainly, size is a good indicator of mood too. On printing versus cursive, we were made to use a fountain pen and cursive style (specifically Marion Richardson style) from the age of 8, whereas kids these days have a choice, and cursive is not taught, leading to attempts being largely illegible. I find printing far too slow for note taking, and I also often miss letters out or poorly form them if the notes are only for me, and the writing tends to be very messy. If I'm taking lecture notes or writing to others, then I use a variation on Copperplate. I do disagree with cursive being about being perfectionist, it's a trait I see more with those who print. Cursive is about flow and efficiency. The flow feels nice, and is about seeing the bigger picture rather than detail, rather the flourishes present in cursive are akin to embellishments to the bigger picture or fleshing out of the larger scheme with necessary details which indicate emphasis, direction and importance - the more flamboyant the flourish, the larger the emotional the importance is, the less flamboyant, the more logical importance, and often reinforced by increased pressure.
Connections between letters are also really significant, are they angular or rounded, flamboyant or minimal, garlanded, arcaded or a mix? The three zones, ascending descending and middle, and their relative sizes, flamboyance and angles give much away too.
    A fascinating subject.

Happy new year, bright side! I'm very familiar with graphology… But to answer your question within that little video yes I use pen all the time. Simply because I am a designer and despite the fact, that I have an iPad - I use it only to draw certain things that have measurements. Otherwise the fastest way for me to write down a sketch or an idea is to use a pen and a paper. And that is always going to be this way. I am fluent in a lot of graphic programs, i work on my computer all the time....I'm also studying software programming - but I will always love sketching in writing by using a pen and paper. in the artist and the design community pretty much everyone knows that when you use a hand the connection between the idea and the expression of it on paper is much faster due to involvement of motor skills and it does make you sharper….Thanks for a great video happy new 2020 !

I also have rounded letters. My O’s are close rounded off open. I write my E’s with wide loops and I cross my T’s with short lines in the middle. My signature is legible. That’s what I got.

My whole handwriting changes all the time. Sometimes I use spacing sometimes I don't, sometimes I slant to the left, right or straight. Graphology doesn't seem to be a very good judge of personality. There are just too many variables to consider like the type of pen, the grip, the situation, the paper you write on, etc. Most of these things never remain constant and may change while writing a single word or a sentence or a paragraph.

What about people who mix upper case and lower case letters? Certainly that means something too.
