    About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK and Escape to rural France to restore this beautiful building to its former glory.

Just the best! I think you are the only chateau that has taken on this scale of garden landscaping. From a blank slate to an authentic walled garden is truly a work of art. A painstakingly hard work of art. Massive project to include the irrigation, electrics and edging. And now the hardscaping. The fact that you are implementing it yourselves is the outstanding part. It will be another Villandry!

Caution Terry and Ash. You may find that the top soil you'll put in the beds will also have weed seeds and roots. I've had two separate deliveries of top soil over the years and spent years eradicating the weeds introduced with the soil. Advice from a plantsman was cover any new soil with plastic for several months to sterilize it. My advice is to follow his advice and wait until autumn to plant your beds. Best of luck.

@@chateaudelalacelleI completely agree! Last year (in America) my husband ordered soil to build part of our yard higher & plant grass, bc it’s been like a pond in the rain. It must’ve come from a farmer’s field bc it was full of wild grains, weeds of all kinds plus stones! Those things then spread to our raised garden beds. It’s awful.

Please say you’ll rent a skid steer to move all that gravel. It’s a three day job with one. Three weeks without. They are available with tracks that won’t mess up your lawn, and if you have to take down a small bit of wall to get it into the garden, it’s well worth it.
Pro tip: if you insist on using wheelbarrows, three is your magic number. Three wheelbarrows, three workers. One man loads an empty wheelbarrow while another man runs his load to the garden while another man is returning from the garden. The loader will always have a full one for a runner to pick up.
I have moved thousands of yards of material this way. It really does help.

Another precaution to use when creating pathways, is to line the pathways with a heavy duty landscape cloth prior to the gravel going down. Heavy duty cloth is key as it will last for years and stop any weeds from growing up thru the gravel. Used it in my pathways, and 20+ years later it is still intact and doing its job. The natural gravel will look wonderful in the garden, once it is watered in and compacted. I think a large ornamental sundial on a pedestal would like wonderful in the middle of the main circle.

Looking at the garden design, it appears that there will be little shade until the trees reach a decent height (probably a few years). If you placed benches around the center circle, you could place a *huge* terracotta, or ceramic pot, in the center. In the summer, you could plant it and put a giant patio umbrella in it illuminated with fairy lights, In the winter, you could take in the umbrella and replace it with a Christmas tree with lights. It just looks lush!

Most people fall for as much variety as possible while big spaces with repeating plants and furniture tie a garden this big together. Glad you take something else for the boxwood. You need a mighty amount of toxic spray to kill the moth. It is not worth it because of the health hazard. We know on here you get the gravel in by hand. Like you do all the family way. Love that.

I agree with you, Terry, that the color of the foundational base gravel matches the grey colors of the buildings and walls of the chateau and garden; however, I think you should consider the topcoat of pea gravel (even if it's in the same grey color) because the pea gravel topcoat would add a level of formality and tradition that suits the formal garden you are creating. The current base gravel seems more suitable for roads and driveways and lacks the elegance of pea gravel.

Your family is amazing but there is only one Patrick and I would suggest that you have a statue of him in the new garden because let’s face it he did most of the digging and you will have him forever keep doing what you do love it all❤

Guys I could watch the landscaping work all day long ! How about a pond with water lilies in the center circle? The outline looks amazing.

Great idea to show the plans again. What an adventure it has been and you all have accomplished so much in a year. I am excited for Shayne to be there to see it in person. We are so proud of your dedication and hard work.

I think a beautiful statue in the middle that you can admire from seating around the curved edges. You can see and hear the fountains. It's going to be so wonderful.

Amazing undertaking! You will have such a sense of accomplishment when you finally stroll in the completed garden with your favorite beverage in hand! Not to mention you will need a full time gardener to maintain it! 🙃

I know you wanted ideas for your center of the walled garden. My idea was some type of gazebo with some seating inside the Gazebo area with some type of shade whether it be some kind of roof on the Gazebo or something for plants to grow up and actually shade over that area. Because that Garden is going to be totally in the Sun and for people to be able to enjoy it for a longer period of time they will probably need some place to sit and be in the shade at some point. I know that Stephanie at Chateau Diaries recently installed a type of Center gazebo in their wall Garden and they're doing climbing plants to go over that area. Maybe you want to take a look at hers on her videos. Her cousin installed it I can't wait to see what your garden is going to look like when it starts to grow out it looks like it's going to be gorgeous.❤😊

The walled garden is really starting to take shape. It will be good to see the other family members helping out. The massive undertaking of putting the irrigation, edging, and electrics is what is going to make it stand out from the surrounding area.

Take a look at the Gardens of Filoli. You may get some ideas for your focal points. We vist the gardens frequently... they're like going back in time. ❤️🙏

I think it's amazing looking back at all the work you have done. Again the attention to detail is outstanding. and Ash must have very strong legs laying all those slabs. Good to see Patrick overseeing it all.

Did you ever expect the enormous amount of work you would have to do to make everything look so spectacular?! The stamina you all have is admirable. You must take huge pride in each and every project that you have completed and are doing. I don't think there are many people who could keep up the pace you are maintaining. One thing for sure there is no need for a gym membership.

A beautiful white lacy gazebo in the middle - not solid, then two curved benches on each side inside (and maybe a marble mosaic floor). A place for a wedding, a lovely dinner, or to enjoy the view.. that’s my romantic side speaking…
