FFXIV Lore- Understanding Chocobos

  • I'll be completely honest. Kinda flew by the seat of robes this time. Despite chocobos being a Final Fantasy staple there are very few references or direct lore about them in and out of game. So I tried to stretch what I thought were the best bits into as long of pieces as I could for this video. All the same, I hope you all enjoyed it!

    You know... for all we love and praise chocobos, have you ever considered how BROKEN they are. We, the WoL, have traveled to places that might be seen as impossible ON MULTIPLE separate occasions. But every single time we call our Chocobo, it appears as though its been following us. Our chocobo is a freaking GOD, and i refuse to believe otherwise.

    The information about Chocobos treating others as family is great. Adds some lore depth to one of my favorite things about the Chocobos, and that is that when one's personal Chocobo is stabled, it will jump up and down happily when it sees you approaching.

    • @mikoto7693
      @mikoto7693 Před 2 lety +12

      Yes, I really connected with the chocobo from the Grand Company quest that got our first mount. While I might have preferred a system like that introduced in FF11 where we could breed our own chocobos from the egg where colour was an inherited trait and food types improved stats. At least opposed to getting one as a full adult though I appreciated the ability to name him and eventually combat train him in a chosen class.
      Maybe it was my long exposure to chocobos from FF7 onwards that helped me immediately see him as a partner rather than pet. I admit I struggled to think of a name and had to think about it for a few minutes before I recalled another character across the games I played that helped me complete my purpose as Dragonborn without actually making me do anything in return. Paarthurnaax. It’s true he had a dark past and likely aided the Dragonborn so that he could begin to try to impose the Way of the Voice on the other dragons but still… you just got past the Greybeards, walked up to him and he straight up greeted you as Dragonborn, taught a word of power and gave valuable help until the end of the game.
      So perhaps that’s why he came to mind for naming my chocobo because it was during ARR, where absolutely nobody else would so much as piss on you if you were on fire without demanding another favour first. So yeah my WoL saw him as partner over pet and to be honest after setting him up with the tank role he’s saved my scrawny Smn/Sch and Whm butt more than once.
      I used him as my primary mount until I unlocked flying then switched to a mount that looked much more graceful in flight… until the flight ability was removed from me in Heavensward and Stormblood and I never could be bothered to get the aether currents so I went back to him was my primary mount again.
      So I’m really happy to see a lore video on them by my favourite scribe.

      Far as how much I like em however?
      Well, Named em Ruby, a partner name I’ve had since the beginning of my gaming career, got their feathers a nice bright red, and lore wise it’s effectively the same. “Wow everyone here in Ul’dah sucks. At least I’ve got my bird buddy.”
      And from there the rest is history. Working em towards level 20 now cause my first money sink was onions. Cause if there’s ANYONE who deserves my full support. It’s my chocobo pal who’s been stitching me back together from the moment I got into the game proper.

      That bird’s been stitching me back up pretty much all the way from day one, took up the sword and shield to protect people and took up the good ol fashioned brawling in case either of em ever failed.
      Heh, Hamon Holyfist’s a real inspiration too I’d say.
      But, I’m pretty sure I’d have stopped bein able to swing long ago if it weren’t for my own Chocobo. Can’t always trust people, but the birds are honest to a fault.

      I was struck how the Dragonborn just strolled up to Paarthurnax and the old dragon just straight up started helping her deal with Alduin without demanding anything first. No defeating monsters or going on fetch quests-just one conversation and he got straight to helping.

      That would be Boco, the original chocobo party member from Final Fantasy Tactics. You can recruit other chocobos in that game, but Boco is the only one with any story (being Weigraf's abandoned chocobo). All of the spirits you see at the end of Return to Ivalice are the Zodiac Braves, the various party members you can recruit in FF Tactics. Minus Cloud Strife, cuz he's a secret bonus character.
      Although really, the most important Zodiac Braves are the ones you fight as bosses in Orbonne Monastery: Mustadio, Agrias, and "Thunder God" Cid. And of course Ramza, the main character of Tactics, who helps out against Ultima.

      I loved meeting my chocobo companion too. And I love travelling around with him and fighting alongside him.. So much so that he’s still the mount I choose when I haven’t unlocked flying yet. I’d have him as a flying mount but it looks too awkward flying.
      It didn’t take me long to start viewing him as my WoL’s partner. More important to her as any fellow adventurer and I’d take him into Duties if I could.
      So I like to think that my WoL treats her beloved chocobo as best she can, and that they share a deep bond because of it.

    Now I am curious. Since Chocobo are intelligent enough to cast some spells, and apply said spells to a degree tactically, could a chocobo who has a mage for a partner in theory learn new spells? Not like Fire IV or anything, but simple spells that can be learned by observation. Especially if they see said mage as a sibling, since I assume chocobos frequently learn things by watching other flock members like ravens and crows do. Plus I can’t help but think of a caster adventurer casting a spell at a monster, then seeing a second weaker spell hit because their chocobo decided the thing was a threat to their “flock”.

    • @PenguinSage
      @PenguinSage Před 2 lety +1

      Its hard to say. Omega could of made Alpha with actual chocobo DNA, just slightly deformed so he looks cuter. Or he was made without any part of him being a chocobo, so he would not be one in that case.
      Regardless, I would gladly call Alpha an honorary chocobo for all the good he has done.

Though they are a sparse and private people, I’ve heard whispers of a home of the boxfolk, but none I’ve come across has an answer as to where or who these tales came from. I do recall a traveler once spoke of a phantom town that mysteriously appeared deep in the twelves wood at the end times of the 7th umbral era. A possible connection?! Who knows…
