Thanks, Professor. And Rachel. I'm loving these more and more every week. This one was especially dense and interesting and thank you, Dr. Sapolsky for being so willing to articulate your ambivalence in your answers to these questions, so well. I think it potentially teaches more than conviction ever can. We can be conflicted about things that offer some value and yet are in conflict with our values, as it turns out. Real intelligence must include the ability to tolerate ambivalence, interrogate it and to continue to wrestle with it. Bravo.

I draw a lot of my personal judgements from scientific knowledge as well, yet this movie highlighted to me that I tend to use the "it's just a person whose past made them do this" argument on people who look and sound innocent, as opposed to smug people who deliberately try to abuse that and are harder to look at as "just innocent animals".

Intriguing discussion about synesthesia. How does it compare with dyslexia? Similar process? Interesting about a person who can add up a math problem in terms of color. If they view the numbers as distinctive colors do they wind up with a blend of those colors in the answer or another distinctive color? What about sound?
Would be interested to hear Robert's take on people who to some extent predict the future?
Oh good grief - psychedelics. Respect for current research so long as it's well regulated and monitored. If new ways can be found to ease depression and PTSD that's great. Curious what would be the neurological mechanisms involved? Like any other medication, how does it work? That being said, I know that there are a subset of people that don't do well on them. They should be careful. Acid casualties happened in the 60s, 70s etc., not always, but they could be unforgiving. In past lives, I've met a couple of different folks who had challenges with them. One, a friend in a wheelchair I used to jam with on guitar. He had dropped acid and thought he could fly, took a leap into the wild blue yonder off a cliff. He fell into reality.
A gentle word to the wise about kids experimenting with drugs -
It's quite normal for kids to want to experiment. They are trying their wings. But, kids, it's too easy to get into trouble, especially nowadays. Dinosaur that I am, I can tell you that back in the day times were more innocent. Young people would get together and maybe have a couple of beers and a little smoke. Back then, pot was not nearly as potent as it is now. The methods by which it (at least much of it) was grown were much more "user friendly" than I've heard of in today's world. These days the cartels are dangerous in how they grow. There is bad use of harsh pesticides and other chemicals that are carcinogenic. There are many stories of the surrounding environments being trashed, for example, by dumping large amounts of chemicals such as pesticides in local creeks. And then there is the fentanyl crisis. This is no joke. Many people are dying. An innocent joint you might have smoked 30 or 40 years ago now can literally kill you if laced with only a grain or 2 of fentanyl. All it takes is one mistake.
The bottom line is your health. I had a friendly aunt, a bit of a character, who once told me that when we get old we pay for the sins of our youth. She was right. When we're young, it's easy to bounce back. This wonderful ability tends to diminish as we age. It's the way it is. If we take care of ourselves and try to stay healthy, we wind up much better off in the long run. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
My 2 cents worth - from a place of caring -
Enjoyed the discussion. We'll have to save the zoo for another time -

Happy B'day Prof Sapolsky! :) I'm loving this series, and you two, needless to say. Of course that doesn't mean I have 100% comprehension of the content.
So, I'm trying to get solid on the predetermined vs chaos thing and even after having watched Stanford lectures 21 & 22 multiple times I haven't quite reconciled the cellular automata thing with randomness. Is that because I conflated the two distinct(?) concepts? i.e., given the assumption that there was an initial starting state, and a few simple rules, wouldn't that predetermine all going forth despite that fact that we can't predict the form that will evolve without iterating from square one? Or does that even makes sense?

    • @bladdnun3016
      @bladdnun3016 Před 2 měsíci +2

Our current understanding of quantum mechanics tells us that nothing in the future is ever certain. At best, predictions can be made with a probability attached to them. On the cellular level, the further into the future you go, the more likely it becomes that some of the more unlikely stuff actually will have happened. For example, it is unlikely that an atom of 40K (a radioactive isotope of potassium we all have in our body) will decay at any given moment. However, it will decay eventually, which, as far as we can tell, is determined by chance. This typically releases a high energy electron, which is capable of inflicting major damage on the DNA (and other stuff). Whether it is absorbed by a nearby DNA molecule and the type of damage inflicted is also largely determined by chance. In very rare cases, this can of course cause cancer. In a similar way, a protein channel may be activated by some chance event, releasing a neurotransmitter and, several steps down the line, you may experience a thought because of this.

With relation to psychology / game theory: situations have affordances, agents having goals - taking the intersection of the two sets [set of agent-goals with set of situation-affordances] gives the game theory moves under the game for consideration as a set. Providing the set of all moves for any game, we can predict e.g the problems of a situation in say politics regarding the agents, their desires (goals) and the affordances of the situation(s) for considering. It is a rule of thumb formula giving an abstract starting point for consideration which can be used say to explore invention, 'novelty' etc as a mathematics sub-space. It gives all of the 'verbs' which since human invention is an action provides a formula for 'novelty,' along with corruption within an institution for example. An application: a lecturer can take advantage of a student in equilibrium given their position if they mark the exams themselves, since there exists a reciprocal - hence - why many universities have exams sent away to be marked by an external entity. I've seen this sort of thing happen at a real university where one of the students was about 21 and I won't list the age of the lecturer, but my point being that first years can be as young as sixteen, so it depends for example on the agent-goal-desire-state if they are willing to for instance face jail time, which is a 'price' in a transaction - but even more depends deeply on the entire psychology, life experiences, etc of that individual, so it's about constructing situations so that they do not have negative equilibrium, e.g 'the apple ripe for the picking will be picked.' So moving the apple outside reach.
it is: I(X) = {x(a_p, g_q) | a_p is in S and g_q is in A where p = q} this is to mean I(X) gives all moves of game where S is the situation, A is the input agent and a_p is affordance of the situation, g_q is the goal of the agent. It can be extended of course to games with multiple agents but I'm lazy and not a mathematician in the real sense. Interactions such as the environment (including us and animals etc) are of course factored in - also - just because a move is in the set doesn't mean it can be played due to constraints etc.
It only really provides a starting point for consideration it isn't a magic fix all get rich formula, it still requires a creative process etc.

We are all equal under the big tent, and god is the ultimate unassailable authority? We trade that for the rational view that we have no free will, and it's about luck, winning the nature/nurture lottery...the leftist view.

"Predetermined, once you get rid of its theological implications, which I do not want to go near with a ten-foot pole...." Dr. Sapolsky often mentions how he concluded at the age of 14 that there is no God. I'm sort of curious why he mentions that because it sounds like a kind of point of pride, as if he is saying, "See, I already knew there was no god when I was 14." But I wonder if he has read some books on near-death experiences. The reason I wonder that is because very often those who have had NDEs mention in their accounts of their NDEs that they felt that they were in the presence of a divine being--God/Jesus/First Mover. And sometimes speak (although telepathically) with the divine "One." And are, of course, ultimately told that it is not their time, that they should go back because "there is still work for them to do" of some sort. In short, it would seem that--outrageous though it must be to scientists of a certain sort--there might well be some "divinity" (however you would name it) and there might well be some "predetermined" aspects to our lives, since NDE folks so often report that they were told they should go back since there were things left for them to do. I guess this subject matter does not interest Dr. Sapolsky--and "precious few" followers of the professor, since I never receive any responses to my NDE-referencing comments--but it seems to me that scientists ought to look into NDEs before making suggestions that there is no "divinity"/God/First mover/etc. I've never had an NDE and wouldn't claim to have any ultimate knowledge, but I wouldn't dismiss an entire field or history without considering what others have experienced and written about. Okee then. Just the same, I enjoy hearing Dr. Sapolsky speak. I like the sound of his voice, and I enjoy thinking about what he relates--much of which is often fascinating!

Robert Sapolsky is only normal person in whole world, Dennett started first sentence with personal attacks and is arrogant as hell. I find it cringe everyone wants to be positive 100% times (this toxic positivity)... When you are positive 100% times you were wrong somewhere. Life is both positive/negative, it is neutral but ppl ascribe value judgements to things ... The very basis of reality is irrational... Ppl like Bernardo Kastrup, Donald Hoffman make theories about consciousness - Kastrup doesn't believe in free will either! None of biggest geniuses in history believed in fw... They make theories everything is one consciousness , but then don't look at implications of their own theories - one would suffer all painful deaths and tortures since 2.6M ago - that is totally absurd!!! Schopenhauer said: there are turtles that go lay eggs on beach and some wolves come and bite them from under their armor and this cruel cycle repeats each year... This worls is either indifferent absurd cosmos/reality of straight up evil. Father and dad go swimming and some youth gang comes fuck with them and father just says: to leave them alone enjoy swimming with his son and they shoot him to head, but then if someone does 1/10000000 to them they cry and invent ethics - PATHETIC! Unit 731 experimented even on scientists and some scientists after doing terrible things when they dissected him alive yelled "brutes" HAHAHA ppl are hypocritical like that! "Sudō had, a few days previously, been interested in talking about women, but now he was thin as a rake, with many purple spots over his body. A large area of scratches on his chest were bleeding. He painfully cried and breathed with difficulty. I sanitised his whole body with disinfectant. Whenever he moved, a rope around his neck tightened. After Sudō's body was carefully checked [by the surgeon], I handed a scalpel to [the surgeon] who, reversely gripping the scalpel, touched Sudō's stomach skin and sliced downward. Sudō shouted "brute!" and died with this last word." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731 Some VIkings tried to steal goal from Indian tent, but then indian catched him and wasn't even threatening him just let him knew he disapproved and told him just he is stealing and he slit his throat how he was entitled like he deserved that gold and was above them! But then when his clan tried to punish by blood eagle: he pussied out. Ppl even knowing harsh punishment will come hurt others and like they are better ,but when someone tries to do 1/100000000 to them suddenly they completely flip out and accuse other of what they were doing! Life is hell. "life is so terrible it can exist only based on lies" - Nietzcshe I hate whole humanity! Everyone is rapist, sadist, murderer and thief! scholarcommons.scu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1052&context=phi

Robert, no free will. So you're a zombie😂 . If we have no free will, evolution would not have created fear, pain, love as they are the primary controllers of human behavior or changing our decision. Think about it. Best wishes
