This may turn out being a good idea, but I think scientist should first check to make sure the plastic roads don't leech any potentially harmful chemicals into the ground water.

@@myzteriouz609Plastic release molecules from it's own composition. Washing it doesn't help for that. So small molecules of plastic might go into the ground and infiltrate more in the environment such as water, earth ground etc. and drinking water with plastic molecules in it is not very good for all living creatures. That's why it's probably not a good idea having plastic roads all around the world....

There's like a million reasons this road is a bad idea, but leeching chemicals is not one of them. The industry standard here is ASPHALT! You know; that product where hot raw petrolium tar is mixed with rock and just dumped on grade. The product whose thick chemical smell lingers for months after install. And lets not forget that asphalt is literally flamible!
You would have to try hard to find a more toxic, more noxious, and more dangerous alternative. What asphalt has going for it is that it's dead cheap and provides great traction to tires.

The plastic will degrade very, because it is soft & abrases very easily. Cars driving on these roads will sand them down into dust. Then you have the issue of UV light which breaks down the plastic, accelerating the road's decay.
Notice how their Plastic Road test bed is only used for bicycle lanes? Bicycles are a 100 times lighter than automobiles, & do not apply any where near the fraction of the damaging forces automobiles apply to a road surface.
This level of engineering dishonesty proves how this is just a grift.

"would last 3x as long" as what? surely you're not saying a material such as plastic (PP?) would last longer than asphalt (plastic is greek for formable i.e. soft, i.e. subject to quick wear)? and when you exchange a section, what will you do with the pipes running through its channels? also even plastic sections need foundation, e.g. macadam, which is generally the most expensive thing when laying roads. there is no gain to be had here. it's a brainstorming exercise that was never vetted

@@kunalaher1026 certainly. While building these kinds of roadways are just about "great" in every aspect, the "catch" so to speak, is the amount of up front manufacturing cost, and by that I mean paying for the custom machinery that will heat and shape the molten plastics to the shape you want. With this specific manufacturing process, it becomes even more expensive if you wish to have a custom made machine that can create different angled roadways that aren't either straight or a 90 degree bend. All of these machines as well as the potential location and jobs being created will make this extremely costly at first, but will be more effective in the long-term with a higher lifespan and more versatility of use.

    This is a stupid idea.
1... Plastic is very soft & abrases easily which will create tons of microplastics that will be immediately released into the environment.
2... Being hollow will cause the road to deform & collapse very quickly, because the weight of the cars, especially trucks... is not being distributed across the entire surface.
3... Plastic has a very low friction coefficient, which is why they are often used to make bushings for rotating mechanical parts. This would cause cars to constantly loose traction... & before anyone suggests just molding the surface to be rough... we go back to problem #1.
4... The plastcs the video is proposing to make these roads out of... quickly breaks down from UV light, which would also result in tons of microplastics being released directly into the environment.
5... Plastics can only be recycled 2 or 3 times, before the polymers are broken down from the process, & they no longer have structural cohesion. The frequent replacement of these road pannels needed, will cost far more money than the current means of road surfacing.
