It couldn’t have been a cold December night, but rather a balmy April night!
In the words of Paul Harvey....and now you know the rest of the story!
This was great!
To all of my CZcams Come Follow me families,
I know you don’t know me but boy do I know you and love you all! I want you to know that all your hard work is paying off for me and probably for everyone who watches your videos. I was leery about reading the Old Testament. I’ve read it before but didn’t understand a lot of it. All of you you have made all the difference in my study of the Old Testament!! I’ve really enjoyed it and for that I am very grateful! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, New Testament!! I love you all and pray for you all!!!
Karyn Curr 😘🥰😍☃️⛄️🎄🛍️🎁🎉🎊🎅🏻🧑🏻🎄💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Brother Chadwick is in my ward here in Ogden! He is the best gospel doctrine teacher. I've learned so much from him!
My wife and I were also wondering about his comments concerning the birth in the winter…had always been taught the birth was in April but is celebrated in December. Love this two part series on this topic. Appreciate the clarity on so many misunderstood parts of this story.
I was wondering the same thing
Yes April, not December, right?
Dr Chadwick has such a wonderful voice. Beautiful story telling today. Thank you.
You are right! John is a joyful person. I am 66 years old and enjoy every day the speeches of John Bytheway on CZcams! I want to let him know that I needed to wait until this time to get access to his speeches. I am an immigrant and it took me several years to understand and speak English and then to have access to Post Pandemic Technology to have the same privilege than the young people had in their time in EEUU to be strengthen to his messages. He did not preach only to the younger ones . He does it to everyone who seeks understanding and strengthening the faith on the Lord. Thank you guys. You are doing an excellent missionary work! I love you!❤
FA'AFETAI tele lava for all the CFM lessons and testimonials!!!and Merry CHRISTmas!!!
The easiest way for us to share the gospel is to 👍 all the uplifting content you watch or listen to. The content will then start showing up in your friends feeds. This also helps the content creators to increase their audience ❤
So awesome!! This all makes so much sense!! Thank you !!❤🇨🇦
Loved this episode! Thank you so much Dr Chadwick for your amazing insights to help us understand the story more accurately. Amazing.
Merry Christmas to you all.
About 30 years ago I dreamed about visiting a grotto which was a shrine. There I met The Great High Priest of the Grotto . I recognized Him as The Man of Sorrows by his eyes which showed great pain but an unbroken spirit.
I have wondered if it was the garden tomb but it was too large, about the size of our high council room in the stake center. Now it makes sense. Also, how fitting it is to put the Living Water into a water trough that gives life in the desert.
Thank you for answering a decades-long question.
So good! Love Jeff Chadwick!
WOW! My cup is full!! Thank you!!
Brother Chadwick, what have you done to us?! 😂 🤯🤯🤯 I’ll never be able unhear this, or to think about the Christmas story the same way! Why isn’t this more well-known??
If they arrived in Bethlehem months before and had a home, why would they have been looking for an Inn to stay that night?
Does that change the thought "there was no room in the inn"?
I find it interesting, and reassuring that the scriptures talk of Jesus being a descendant of David, when it's Joseph's lineage, not Mary's which is descended from David, and Jesus is the son of God, not the biological son of Joseph. This speaks volumes for how seriously the Lord views adoption, both as grafting us into the lineage of Abraham, and legal adoption in this life.
When I hear many Christians quote the scripture, "spare the rod, spoil the child" and use it as a reason to physically hit their children as a form of discipline it clearly is taken out of context. Sparing the rod means failing to teach them the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The rod is Christ, not a stick to hit a child with.
Why is the Savior’s birth said by Jeff to be December and not April?
My question too.
I love this episode it was delightful and awesome. I only had one question though, I thought Joseph Smith said that Jesus Christ was born on April 6th and Dr Chadwick kept saying he was born in December... Can you expound on this?
The idea that Jesus was born on April 6th is a misreading of the doctrine covenants. What many saints have come to believe that Christ was born on April 6th is simply a fancy way that people of that time. Wrote the date. There are other places where the same person wrote the date in the same way and it has nothing to do with the birth of Christ being on that specific day.
I learned so much from this!!! No Romans??? Joseph and Mary moved there purposefully??? Etc etc etc Wow wow wow!!
So informative, but what about April 6th as revealed and would have allowed Jesus to have had a three year ministry.
What’ interesting to me is that Jesus was known under an adopted lineage as stated in luke 2 and Matthew 1 and the majority of us are to be adopted into Israel as president Nelson keeps reminding us.
Does anyone else think he sounds like Elder Holland? And they're both named Jeffrey R.?
I think that Joseph and Mary were going to register as stated in the Bible. I think they were planning on going to stay with Elizabeth who would have been living in the hills of Judaea. Mary had to deliver and when it’s time it’s time. She couldn’t make it that far and Joseph had to make accommodations immediately. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months when Elizabeth was pregnant she would have no reason not to stay with her at this time. Just my thoughts. Let me know your thoughts.
I was teaching the Primary children the song When Joseph went to Bethlehem this last Sunday. I have been to Israel and when in Bethlehem our guide told us about the stone manger and showed us one. I was able to tell the children about that and was so happy to hear Bro. Chadwick talk about it and other things about the actual nativity. I. Talked a lot about Joseph and how he wasI would love to get a copy of his book about the Stone Manger. Is it still available?
If Mary was only a couple months pregnant, she wouldn't be visibly pregnant so the whole town wouldn't necessarily know that she with child.
Elder Russell M. Nelson “Why This Holy Land?” Ensign December 1989
I Love this discussion about Isaiah 11. Thank you so much! Quick question, is it fair to say Joseph is the one creatively applying the scripture to himself when the Angel Moroni seems to be doing it first? Why else would Moroni quote Isaiah 11 saying it was about to be fulfilled? Could Moroni and Joseph both be creatively applying those verses? I only ask because it seems like it adds more legitimacy to Joseph's application if an Angel is making the same point. Albeit Isaiah may or may not have intended to bring Joseph into the prophesy. Just a thought/question. Thanks so much for this. This episode has really helped me have a more thoughtful and contimplative Christmas.
You are correct. According to Section 113, it's Jesus Christ saying it. Joseph Smith was not being "creative" about himself.
I've heard that there were probably other people traveling with them? Also, was there at least a midwife attending the birth? Maybe it wasn't just this couple alone during the birth?
Was it really a star night in December or was it really a star night in April, the spring of the year!
I haven’t listen to it, but the scripture says of the wise men they found the “young child” in the “house,” not a manger. They traveled a long way to get to where He was born.
Im curious about Dr. Chadwick's conclusion that Mary would have purposely gone to Bethlehem to fulfill the prophecy rather than a celebration of a featival/ holy day? Its seems speculation to me that we KNOW thats why mary and Joseph went anr stayed in Bethlehem. Any thoughts on this?
Is there a hard copy of Dr. Chadwick's book Stone Manger? When I searched for it I could only find an audible download.
Wasn’t Jesus born in April?
I’m wondering why he’s saying December also!
Yes, but we celebrate it in December with the rest of the world. Not everyone who listen to these podcasts are Latter-day Saints. I also love that we get a separate time to really celebrate his birth with great joy and then truly reverence His death without mixing the two. It may not be accurate but it seems appropriate.
Not necessarily.
If you read the D&C 20:1 text carefully, it does not really identify the specific birthrate of Jesus Christ so much as it uses a common (yet ornate) expression of the date of what we know as Section 20. While Elder Talmage was an advocate of the April 6 birth date proposition, President J. Reubens Clark and other Church authorities have not held that same opinion. Moreover, the popular/traditional notion that Christmas was hijacked from a pagan winter holiday is also challenged by Christian scholars. I am not uncomfortable with the research that suggests that the actual date of the Savior's birth may well be some time in December.
I guess when it really comes down to it, it doesn’t really matter. I’m not ready to dismiss all I do know for things I don’t quite know. But it is interesting. We tend to like to romanticize stories of the past and facts are often changed or misinterpreted, so that doesn’t surprise me. Does it really matter what month He was born? What matters is THAT He was born. President Monson said, “Because He came, there is meaning to our mortal existence.” That’s what really matters. ❤
If they moved to Bethlehem months before then why the stable and manger?
😋🐲🕯️🤶🐉🎊😎🙏🍷🎉⛄☦️🍾🎇🥴🌲🍻🎆🆒☮️🍺🥂🧬✝️🍹🧧🎅👍🍸🎄🤗🕊️🗓️😊⛪🦌!2023!
Also Isaiah 11 was a chapter quoted by Moroni to Joseph Smith in 1823 per Oliver Cowdery.
I also thought the wise man didn't come until Christ was 2 years old as depicted in one of the church videos. Oh well
I need to ask Bro Chadwick if he is my cousin. I’m the granddaughter of Roy S Chadwick from American Fork. I believe Bro Jeffrey Chadwick is the one who wrote a book my mother contributed to about our family. He wrote the Chadwick history. I’d be curious to find out if he is my cousin.
If it was known from these scriptures in Isaiah and Jeremiah that the Messiah would be a nasi - of Nazareth, why would there be what I have seen written as a common saying "can anything good come from Nazareth"?
46:58 Joseph now knows something Mary knew from the angel, but he didn't.
All these details about Christ's birth are nice, but it's akin to discussing where the BOM took place (North or South America) when it doesn't really matter. What matters is that He came. Caesar was the ruler demanding taxes ~ not sure why there wouldn't be Roman soldiers....
I choose to believe what the prophets have said about the birth of Jesus, perhaps 2022 years ago April was in December. Those details don’t matter as much as the fact that the Savior was born. I don’t believe every word spoken by Dr. Chadwick is exact truth
49:10 it wasn't a census.
I take it Dr Chadwick has not read the first few chapters of Jesus the Christ? Mary was absolutely of David (it's not Protestant at all).
Several of the comments and discussions were disorienting to me. Oh my goodness, I didn’t like the talk about that already having a house and that there was no stable. Why did everyone else teach this differently? I wanted so much to love this, but I just didn’t.
I wondered if this version is a widely adopted plausible more accurate story. I think it is because as we have progressed hundreds of years since adopting these stories and traditions, more knowledge has come to light and more accurate descriptions are being made. I'm choosing to not let the accuracy (or inaccuracy) of traditions distract me from the focus of the season. It's a little challenging, but I think it's the right choice for me.
I'd say with Brother Chadwick's extensive credentials as an archeologist, his is the most plausible explanation. Although it takes a minute to wrap my mind around this new information, I found it fascinating and enlightening. I have much more respect for Jesus's parents now than ever before.
