  • Join us for a first look at the new Grady-White 281 CE Coastal Explorer at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show. This 28-foot inshore/offshore center-console is a fishing boat at heart but easily crosses over to a perfect boat for the whole family to enjoy. The standard electric fold-down sport deck with stowable ladder for swimming, diving, or fishing, and the newly designed aft bench seat offers three different configurations for fishing or lounging. BoatUS Magazine new boat editor Lenny Rudow shows off some of the smart engineering that went into this boat. Base model comes nicely appointed.

Looks great, but I have a question. Why doesn't GW (or other boat builders) build a boat for the Great Lakes charter fishing fleet? A walk-a-round for fishing is very handy but it has captains constantly spinning their heads keeping track of up to six customers. Traditional charter boats have all their customers at the back of the boat where they are efficiently monitored. No captain wants a child sitting on the gunnel or leaning over looking into the water. There are very few boat builders that offer a 30-32 ft. inboad for the Great Lakes charters.

Interesting question, Capt. We certainly can't speak for Grady-White, but there are indeed few boats of that nature being built today. That's a result of market forces - boatbuilders tend to produce what the market demands, or they go out of business. Fortunately, there are some custom builders out there who often fill in the gaps. Thanks for watching!

That's the multi-thousand dollar question, Dal! I asked Lenny if he knows before I posted the video, and I've searched around for that myself, but the answer eludes us. If I can get a base price, I'll post it. From what I am gathering, though, the cost of materials/parts is fluctuating so much right now, the base price may change as well.

I remember when the Grady 33 cabin with gen went over $200k at the boat show. Now a bay boat 28’ for $350k!

Honestly, boats are pricey, rvierra. And the better the materials used and the more features that come standard, the more expensive they are. For more budget-friendly options and a lot of value for your money, there are a bunch of great new boats in the under $50K category. We took a look at some of them at a recent boat show: czcams.com/video/DQIBbefL26E/video.html And if you look, there are plenty of others out there.

@BoatUS Oh my! Well...thank you for educating me on that! I have only owned 3 boats since 83 (as in 1983). All blue water fishers. I guess you learn something new every day, right?
