Just want to add another shout out to Robert Picardo who KILLED it in this movie as Cowboy. Not just playing Cowboy which was already excellent, but playing Jack playing Cowboy too. That kind of layered comedic performance takes some real chops that not everyone can pull off well, and he did fantastic.
Best performer on Star Trek Voyager.

There's an old sci-fi thriller from 1966 called Fantastic Voyage where a team goes into a scientist's brain in a miniature sub to remove a blood clot. For its day the effects were impressive. This movie came out only 21 years later (inspired by Fantastic Voyage) and improving on the movie effects. So at the time most people seeing this were familiar enough with the first movie but enjoyed the comedy. There are a lot of comic actors in the movie you probably wouldn't recognize now but were often seen in the 80s. Henry Gibson, you might have recognized as the lead "Illinois Nazi" from the Blues Brothers as well as the dream lady at the checkout was Kathleen Freeman who was also the nun in the Blues Brothers. During the scene in the doctor's office he is sitting between Joe Flaherty and Andrea Martin, both well known from Second City TV Network which was a comedy show that helped launch the careers of many people including Martin Short, Rick Moranis, John Candy and Eugene Levy.

I've had my eye on the long awaited remake of Fantastic Voyage forever! Could be wrong but I think James Cameron was originally attracted.
The original pitch for this film was "If you shink Dean Martin down and injected him inside Jerry Lewis." After Steven Spielberg got involved who loved Fantastic Voyage he got now sadly late Jeffrey Boam to help fix the script, who also wrote Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Innerspace, The Lost Boys, and Lethal Weapon 2 . Sadly Jeffrey passed away in 2000. But, still a fantastic film.
Don't forget Robert Picardo as the Cowboy!
Innerspace was an underrated gem from 1987 that was sadly overlooked during a summer dominated by Predator, Beverly Hills Cop II, Robocop, The Witches of Eastwick, The Lost Boys, Spaceballs, and The Untouchables.

This was one of those movies when I was a teenager that I would play almost every day after school. I had 4 movies that I stuck to: Star Wars: New Hope, Romancing the Stone, InnerSpace, and Dune. I'm glad to see that even after 36 years I still get choked up with he sees the baby and realizes he's in Lydia. Honestly, I love your channel, and REALLY love reconnecting with movies I grew up watching through you, but I thank you for today's movie just for that reminder. đ„°đ„°đ„°
As a kid growing up in the 80s, this was one of my top movies. It belongs to a certain personal 'genre' of adventurous movies from my childhood that are close to my heart, along with The Goonies, Explorers, Flight of the Navigator, E.T, Adventures in Babysitting, Big, Short Circuit 1 & 2, Big Trouble in Little China, Overboard, Batteries Not Included, and Gremlins 2: The New Batch.
OF course there are a bunch of other 80s movies I love even more than most of these, but these ones have always sort of been filed together in my mind.
Martin Short's physical comedy is priceless. The way he can dance and use his whole body to react to any situation. Another shrinking movie, even though not a comedy, is "Fantastic Voyage" with Rachel Welch, which I highly suggest.
Thank you for mentioning Fantastic Voyage. It had great special effects for it's time. In fact, it won four Academy Awards...one of which was for special visual effects.

Fantastic Voyage was one of my favorite movies as a kid. It'd be on TV every so often back in the early days of cable and I'd drop everything to watch it.
Yes, this is almost a direct spoof of Fantastic Voyage. And don't forget The Incredible Shrinking Woman.

This movie is a lot of fun, from the characters to the story to the action scenes to the comedy!
Still miffed they never moved forward with that sequel. I know they've been trying to get a reboot/requel off the ground the past few years now again - but unless Martin Short and Dennis Quad and Meg Ryan are involved, I'm not sure anymore. Also, Joe Dante should direct a new film regardless if it's a sequel or reboot.

An abandonment/loss of the technology due to Tuck swiping the chips and Jack being a nerd/scientist trying to reestablish the tech his dad pioneered and "lost" while testing it on himself and Tuck swooping in to save the day at the end with the original tech to save his son would be great.

Such an underrated movie. Love it.
This is one of my many favorites. It's a reimagining of the 1966 science fiction film Fantastic Voyage. The 1966 movie was also groundbreaking for its special effects at the time, but had no comedic element whatsoever. It focused mainly on a grew of scientists entering the body of a terminally ill man in an attempt to save his life, and they had to work against the clock because the craft and crew would automatically return to normal size within just a few hours, killing the man they were trying to save. The Effects in Innerspace were some of the best ever created, and they still hold up against any CG that has ever been done. It would be a crime to update this movie. It fits the time frame too well. Martin Short is the GOAT.
She should definitely watch Fantastic Voyage, the wire work and sets were amazing in that film

I LOVE this movie. Robert Picardo, aka The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager was The Cowboy. Also, you won't recognize them but there are two awesome cameos in the doctor's office scene. Joe Flaherty and Andrea Martin, who were Martin Short's fellow cast members on the classic sketch comedy series SCTV. Dennis Quaid wasn't a knockoff Jack Nicholson, he was a knockoff Harrison Ford (in fact he did audition for the part of Indiana Jones. Fun, right?) but he became a great actor in his own right. Christian Slater is the knockoff Nicholson.
Kevin McCarthy (Scrimshaw) was the bad guy in UHF. That's where you've seen him before. But he's best known for the classic sci-fi movie, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Kevin McCarthy was also well known for his Twilight Zone episode

Picardo was also in "Legend" buried under makeup, and dubbed by a woman. He was prosthetic stuffing. He was prosthetic stuffing quite a few times before he got to be famous with his own face.
2 other great early sci-fi movies with Dennis Quaid are Dreamscape and Enemy Mine (with Louis Gossett Jr.). A great Martin Short movie is Pure Luck (with Danny Glover)
The effects team worked their asses off for this movie, and I love how well it holds up. Still one of my favorite movies.
If you like Dennis Quaid playing this kind of character, you'd probably enjoy "The Right Stuff". He plays the real-life astronaut Gordo Cooper. He was definitely chosen for Innerspace based on that performance.
Yes, Ashleigh, please watch The Right Stuff! It's lengthy (bring snacks) but such a great story about the real Space Race astronauts!

Love this movie. It deserved to make _far_ more than it did at the box office.
First, this film is now a cult classic and a must-watch, and it is considered a box office success because it didn't take much to make this film only $27 million, and got back $42 million.
fun fact about those rushing bloodstream scenes. They created a miniature prop pod, and a large (nearly 60ft long) soft-walled tube that they pumped water and those giant blood cells (that are made of silicon, in different shades of red and pink) to get the effect of travelling through the bloodstream

FINALLY!!!!!!! This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Martin Short and Dennis Quaid knocked it out of the park creating the illusion they were playing off each other even though they are on screen together for no less than 3 minutes. The Practical Effects are insane. I love Gremlins and Gremlins 2 but this to me has to be Joe Dante working on all Cylinders. Excited to see your take on it đ

They're not on screen together Dante had them together on set at all times. Dante wanted real chemistry, when One is being filmed the other is just off screen talking to them though an earpiece.
The Jack Nicholson Knockoff Award will always go to Christian Slater. I remember an interview after Pump Up The Volume where Slater said his acting style came from Nicholson and he spent a lot of time practicing in the mirror to emulate him. But I see what you mean with Quaid. He's got that Nicholson charm.

There were loads of computers involved in the design of the equipment, planning of the missions, and execution of the missions including mainframe computers at multiple locations to process mission data in real time and of course the guidance computers in the spacecraft. I already knew all this, but a three second web search reveals the info to anyone. âComputers were used to just âproofreadâ their workâ is easily the dumbest comment Iâve read this year so far.

This was one of those movies that you waited around at the movie rental/tanning booth place to rent (along with 3 or 4 more). 80s comedy at itâs best. Loved the reaction!
Meg Ryan and Dennis Quiad met on this set and were married from 1991-2001. They didn't date until their second film together as they had few actual scenes together.
You may know Dennis as the dad from The Parent Trap, Gordon Cooper in The Right Stuff, the dad in Yours Mine and Ours. He will be playing Reagan in the upcoming film Reagan.
His Brother Randy Quaid was Cousin Eddie in Vacation.
I love the shot where Robert Picardo plays both Jack Putter and the Cowboy unconscious in the bathtub. There's a moment when Picardo is off-screen where Short takes over and Picardo has to run behind the set and change clothes to get into the bathtub, so it's an unbroken shot in which he plays both characters.

I'm amazed by that shot even to this day. Picardo lip-synching Short is flawless--or maybe Short post-dubbed his lines to match Picardo. Either way, it turned out perfect.

To answer Ashleigh's question at 6:00 , having a cluttered lab like this is more realistic but likely still too neat. (I spent time at a national particle physics lab.)
This is not a business, where they have to worry about building more than one widget, and how to make them look nice so people would buy them.
This is a built-on-the-fly prototype, that needed quick access to the parts for repairs and modification. With very limited resources, money and effort would be spent on the equipment itself rather than trying to tidy things up.
I was going to say the same thing about my Dad's lab when I was a kid.
*Fun Fact:* Robert Picardo (The Cowboy) was the voice of Johnnycab in Total Recall, so there is a connection between the two movies. đ
As a teenage fan of the 1966 movie, âFantastic Voyageâ, I had to see this in theatre when it came out. When I got the VHS, I watched it 3 or 4 times before loaning it to a friend whose never-cleaned player ate it. It never got replaced, but the irresponsible friend did. Today is the first time I've seen it since then.

We need more Joe Dante movies reacted to. He and John Landis aren't remembered well enough, when they both had about 15 years of brilliant movies. I bring up Landis because they were friends. I saw them geeking out together walking though the booths at a sci-fi convention. I don't even think they had a panel there.
Loved this movie when I was a kid. It's drill fun to this day. Glad you had a chance to see it.

Enemy Mine is GREAT! One of the better underrated Sci-Fi films of the 1980's. One of my favorites. Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr are the best paring, and the effects are outstanding! Bring a tissue though! It can get a little maudlin!
I haven't seen this movie in years. Had a blast revisiting it with you. I used to watch it all of the time.
It wasn't just the antiquated computers that got us to the moon. It was countless hours of insanely intelligent people writing code, calculating, and running simulations on proofs of concepts along with amazing engineering. It was the knowledge of all those people involved that helped configure and calibrate those computers to do their jobs, and even then we had wicked smart people monitoring them the entire time. There was a point in time where people actually thought out of necessity... we were probably better for it.
I loved watching this movie when I was a kid. Martin Short quickly became one of my favorite actors when I was young. Captain Ron and Pure Luck were always fun movies I watched a lot growing up.

I saw this at the cinema back in the day. I was always surprised it wasn't a bigger hit. Dante makes terrific family fantasy movies.
"This is how I spell relief": Dennis Quaid's line is a reference to a TV commercial for an antacid tablet called Rolaids that prevent heartburn and indigestion. The commercial asks "How do you spell relief?" and various people reply "I spell relief r.o.l.a.i.d.s." BTW, Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan were married when they made INNER SPACE together, as well as a remake of the 1949 neo-noir crime thriller D.O.A. Finally, INNER SPACE is directed by the wonderful JOE DANTE who also directed GREMLINS and GREMLINS 2, as well as PIRANHA, THE HOWLING, EXPLORERS, THE 'BURBS, which are all terrific 80s films in their own right (also, MATINEE is a terrific Dante film from the early 90s and lots of folk love his late 90s film SMALL SOLDIERS).
Two movies you must now see. First, one that others have already mentioned: Fantastic Voyage. It was the very major film about miniaturization. (Back in the 1950s there was a movie, The Incredible Shrinking Man, but that was more like horror, a tiny man dealing with a cat and a spider.) You also need to see Apollo 13. it was about the one time -- out of seven -- we tried to land on the Moon but this time we failed. The astronauts are played by Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton, and it's a true story but a real rollercoaster -- and yes, we went to the Moon again and again with primitive computers and almost no electrical power worth speaking of.

The Cowboy was played by Robert Picardo. You saw him (sort of) perviously in Total Recall as the robotic driver of the Johnny Cab in Total Recall. OK, it was an animatronic version of him, but they used his likeness and he did the voice, so it still counts.

Dennis Quaid was a staple of 80's movies, his boyish charm landed him a lot of roles. From sci-fi adventures like 'Enemy Mine,' 'Dreamscape' and Jaws 3. To dramas like 'The Right Stuff,' 'The Big Easy' and 'DOA.'
He and Meg Ryan were actually married for a while, their son Jack is also an actor who's in a lot of things these days.
If you love Martin Short, you should definitely check out 'Captain Ron' before the summer ends.

I'm particularly fond of Undercover Blues! Dennis and Kathleen Turner were a lot of fun and Staley Tucci's El Muerte was hysterical! It's not what you'd generally consider a quality film but it makes my wife and me laugh every time we watch it.
The two People on the couch with Martin Short at the Doctor's office worked with him on SCTV ('76-'81), a Canadian Sketch Comedy show that was basically Canada's answer to SNL. They are Joe Flaherty and Andrea Martin along with Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, John Candy, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis made up most of the cast of SCTV.

"Steven Spielberg presents" means he was a producer on the film, not the director. The director here was Joe Dante (the same guy who did the Gremlins movies among others).

And Robot Hand Guy was played by Vernon Wells. He's an Australian rules football player turned actor who became famous in the States for playing Wez/Rooster/Mohawk Guy in Mad Max 2: the Road Warrior. I don;t know if you've seen that franchise yet, but they are worth watching if you like Eighties movies.
Dennis Quaid was also in a movie "Enemy Mine." He's an astronaut stranded on an a planet with an alien humans are at war with, played by Lou Gosset. They have to work together to survive. Alien Nation was also good.
Innerspace is a forgotten gem and is one of my favourite films. All of the visual effects of the inside of Jack were mostly done in camera with miniatures and also a few opticals. No CGI whatsoever.
So cool to see you watch this movie. It's one of my favorites. Miniaturizing the bad guys down to 50% size was hilarious. "All big men have credit cards." LOL!

Most computers today and even back in the 80's where built to do "several different things". In a nut shell the "computers" used on the Apollo missions where dedicated machines made to do "one thing", but that "one thing" was done "well". Just like your "dumb" microwave's task was to basically heat up your food, maybe not to your satisfaction, but it did it "reliably".

The marketing tricks worked on Ashleigh, because it was "Steven Spielberg presents..." on the top line, but he basically just gave them money to put his name on it. Joe Dante directed it, who also directed Gremlins and other great movies.

No. Spielberg was heavily involved in production. He was planning on directing it at one point and he was the one that turned it into a comedy. The original concept was to get an action star to be Jack.
I really loved this movie as a kid, and it ends with a huge setup for a sequel, but that never happened. :( Some people might recognize Robert Picardo, the Doctor from Star Trek Voyager, as "The Cowboy". With WAY more hair on his head... This was near the height of what can be accomplished with practical effects. Still holds up quite well to this day, in my opinion (as do many others around this time).

If you like Dennis Quaid, I highly recommend another lesser known sci-fi film he starred in: *Dreamscape.* It's awesome and does not get the love it deserves. Ashleigh should toss it on a poll in the future.

One of my favorite Meg Ryan flicks, that's not usually on most people's radar, but that I think you'd like is "French Kiss" with Kevin Kline. Also, since I brought it up, another favorite romcom involving European travel is "Only You", with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.!

The computers that were used for the moon landings were not used to get to the moon. The hardware, the rickets, the capsules, the modules. were all designed with slide rules and a whole lot of people doing calculations.
Computers were used in the lander, but they were custom built and programmed for only that purpose. They didn't even have an internal clock. Modern computers spend 99.999 percent of their time waiting for human input, and modern operating systems chew up half the processing power running background processes that have nothing to do with the applications actually in use.
I remember when I was a kid we had Innerspace recorded on a VHS tape and it wasn't until years later, as an adult, I decided to revisit the movie on DVD (there was a large portion of it damaged on VHS). Such a fun-ass movie! I really need to watch it again!
Before "Innerspace", there was "Fantastic Voyage" (1966) with Raquel Welch.

The Cowboy was played by Robert Picardo, who has appeared in nearly every single Joe Dante movie ever made, including The Howling, Gremlins, Explorers, The 'Burbs, and Gremlins 2: The New Batch.
The cab driver in the beginning was played by Dick Miller, who was also in a lot of Dante's movies (both of the Gremlins flicks).
Kevin McCarthy who plays Victor Scrimshaw is best known for his role in the science fiction movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). As well as appearances on many TV shows such as The Twilight Zone, Hawaii Five-0 and The Rifleman. đ

I had this movie on VHS that I'd taped off of a TV broadcast way back in the day. Loved the hell out of it. I must've watched this movie dozens of times as a kid.
I remember seeing this in the theater in 87 when I was 12.

1987 was a fantastic year for movies. Predator, Robocop, Princess Bride, Lethal Weapon, Empire of the Sun, Wall Street, Dirty Dancing, Good Morning Vietnam, Planes Trains and Automobiles and more.

Another one of my favorite movies growing up, and I have never seen that particular poster. What got us to the moon wasn't simply a computer. It was some of the most determined and intelligent of people with a blank check and many, many rounds of getting a little closer until we did it. Look up the story of Katherine Johnson sometime, she was one of the many it took to set foot on that big rock and what can happen when we put stupidity aside and stand together, pulling the same rope in the same direction to achieve a monsterous goal.
The scene in the doctor's waiting room is a joy because all three actors were on a great show called SCTV back on the early 80s.
That was one of my favorites! So many greats came from there, too. We called it the off-Broadway SNL show, lol.

I am so glad to see someone react to this movie, what a fun ride. To answer you question about the "relief" part,: "How do you spell relief?" had been a long running slogan for Rolaids back in the 80's. As for Jimmy Hoffa he was a long time Teamsters' union leader. Who disappeared without a trace one day in 75. Back in the 80's there would often be quotes on tv or in movies a question was asked about where something or someone was, the reply would be something like: "He's hanging with Jimmy Hoffa". While I used quotes it's more for the type than the actual words you could hear. And funnily enough you mentioned Jack Nicholson, he portrayed him in a biopic titled "Hoffa" back in 1992.
I still need to check out "Hoffa" the Biopic with Nicholson; heard of it but never had a chance to check it out. Yes, many 80's movies made Hoffa references... EG: 9-5 with Lily Tomlin and the girls driving around trying to decide what to do with the body in their trunk "Huh... they never found Jimmy Hoffa". đ

Jimmy Hoffa is from St Louis. In fact his sister was a County Judge (as in Judge and not administrator) in St Louis County for a long time. He owned a furniture store which is now a U-Haul storage location. When I rented a storage unit there, there was an apartment on the top floor, sealed by federal court order and no one was allowed up there. Apparently, Hoffa had an apartment there and used it on occasion when he was in St. Louis. It's since been made an extra floor of storage so the idea I had that Jimmy Hoffa was living in his apartment under witness protection is a fallacy. There is always the old joke that Hoffa was sealed in the concrete of the Giants Football stadium or some such thing. But they never found him and his disappearance remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of the latter half of the 20th century

Love this movie. When I was young I saw this, and every time I mentioned it to people no one knew what I was talking about, so I started to think I had dreamed it up. It wasn't till my 20's that I found out the name of the movie and got to watch it again, and know for sure the movie actually existed.
'Come back here, you Safeway clerk...' My dad was the manager of a Safeway and my sister and I always loved that line.

A forgotten classic. Not forgotten by me. I saw this in the theater as a child. Fun stuff. All that would be computer graphics and would look like trash now, this looks amazing still.

In the 80ÂŽs... every movie/show that says "Steven Spielberg presents" was a jewel! It was a Quality seal.
Dennis Quaid is one of those "that guy who was in that thing" actors. He has over 100 acting credits, some tv, but mostly movies, and the majority of them are major parts. But it covers such a broad spectrum of genres that he's never been typecast. He just as good with drama as comedy, with westerns as sci-fi. Fun fact, not only did his character in this end up with Meg Ryan, so did he. They became a couple during filming, were married in 1991, but divorced in 2001. Fun Fact 2, his brother is Randy Quaid, a great comedic actor, probably best known for playing Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon Vacation movie series, though he has also done a lot more - including a 1987 made for tv movie in which he played a young LBJ in the story of his early years and his start in politics.

I always thought the doctor got the funniest line when asked how he would treat a case of possession. His response - "well, the medieval remedy was to flay the skin off your body with brands of fire. I've no idea what the current thinking is." The waiting room patients were Short's former SCTV colleagues Joe Flaherty and Andrea Martin. The main villain is Kevin Mcarthy, prolific character actor and star of the original 1956 "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" - as well as a classic episode of "The Twilight Zone". "That's how I spell relief" was the advertising slogan for Rolaid's antacid tablets.

Ashley, find a place that has Apples (the old computers). They have like no delay. They are fast as lightening. As soon as you tell the computer to do something, it does it. These people going to the moon had contingency upon contingency, back up upon back up. Watch The Right Stuff, Apollo 13, From The Earth To the Moon, Hidden Figures. You will never doubt again that we landed on the moon many times.

This movie was super fresh when it came out, I'd never seen anything like it before. Need to watch the whole thing again, it started my lifelong Dennis Quaid crush.
This is one of my favorite comedies. For me, the song and the long drive was the perfect way to end it.
One of the best SciFi comedies of the 80s. Martin Short is outstanding here as the hapless store assistant Jack. A great concept with the ultra minimisation, possibly way ahead of its time now with nano surgery now being a real thing. Denis Quaid is great as Tuck, as is Meg Ryan, and the Cowboy is outstanding as the comic character. Love the scene is the supermarket when the till shows the wrong amount his anxiety realised. Funny when Tuck is stimulating his adrenal gland to make Jack violent. All in all a great plot and fun film, good choice Ashleigh.
