Sometimes I think the clapping isn't so much about the fact that the pilots did a great job, but that everyone is so happy they're not smeared across a runway! hahaha
***** On A300 series aircraft, Landing can be automatic.... Even in bad weather (ILS level: over 3). Just saying. I never clap, but i thank them at the exit of the aircraft. Because i'm polite
puffnstuff4004 on the A380 some of those passengers clapping are almost half a block away, from the flight deck. I can hear passengers and FA on the A320; I'd imagine the same to be true on all A320's and 737's families for that matter. Similar size aircraft and the manufacturer of the door are the same. But yeah I get your point. Passengers don't truly understand what it takes to get an aircraft back down to earth safely. We rarely get a thank you or a smile for that matter. However I didn't become a pilot to be thanked. Well sorta!
+Kristiana Wilson My favorite place to be in bad weather is the wheel well, at least during takeoff. Once airborne I sneak out onto the wing and immediately start causing trouble. I remember one time I was doing my thing in a thunderstorm and all of a sudden someone inside the plane spotted me. The nutcase started freaking out and I could tell he was screaming. He acted like he was trying to get people to believe him, but I don't think they did. Not until the plane landed and he was taken away on a stretcher did people see the results of my visit. Later I learned the incident was turned into a segment of the Twilight Zone. I didn't make a cent from it. :-/
Theres really no need to clap, but clapping is always great. On these ZERO VISABILITY conditions, the auto pilot does most or all of the work to land the plane. :)
Yh sure, the pilots would have had their wipers on the ILS to guild them to the runway, but from the passenger window, the zero visibility is created above the wings when moisture in the air is very high, its called wing condensation, so the pilot would have had a different view to outside, nevertheless, great work from the flight deck. Usually though, it would be very likely for the pilot to trip the autopilot out for the last 2-300 feet of the approach to flare the aircraft manually.
Andy YCY ya thats why a DON'T GET. Why pilots diconnect autopilot right before touchdown. They might as well autopilot all the way instead diconnecting it a few hundred feet above. Why do they do that do u know?
Reason are because generally, the pilots flying manually can flare the landing better than autoland and will generally do a better job than the autopilot when they see the runway. Regulations for pilots also rules that for the pilot flying(PF), that pilot will have to do 3 or more manual landings during the course of 90 days. it is also part of the SOP (standard operating procedures) for many airlines unless if they are performing a CAT IIIC ILS landing in which case, it is fully automated as the visibility is absolute zero. Maybe you will get what I mean....search typhoon Vicente landing and click on the cockpit video, its a A320, the warning noise in the video is the autopilot being tripped out.
+Zszs100 it depends on the type of ILS (Instrument Landing System) available: there are different types, and some are more accurate than others. In the best types (Category 3c, sometimes 3b), the signals are accurate and strong enough for the autopilot (or pilot) to fly the plane literally right onto the runway even if they never see it (although in practice, the lights are so bright that you'd always see them just before landing, even in the worst conditions). In the "not quite as good" type (Category 2 or 3a, sometimes 3b), the signal is strong and accurate, but not quite accurate enough to be certain that it's perfect. For those systems, the pilot has what's called a "decision height" where they have to either see the runway and choose to land, or abort the landing (fly back up again). That's why sometimes they disconnect just before touchdown, but sometimes don't. Although sometimes they prefer to do it manually for practice, too
Hey there! Visibility fluctuated a lot while rains battered the aircraft. This is an Airbus A380 so effects might not be very noticeable plus camera auto stabilization. JFK was closed for ~ 20min after we landed.
Only fogs, probably the airport had a major change afterwards, cat 3 ILS must be in use, it's an A380, not a Cessna. No serious gusts, the plane must be fine.
How about you try becoming an airline pilot in Europe, Middle East or India ? You will understand the difference between pilots and other professions, by the way - I am an airline pilot myself ... It takes years to pass the written exams, practical checks, route checks... How about this ? You try to take just 1 theoretical lesson with me on any subject in the pilot course, you will yourself understand if it’s really true that pilots don’t do anything... Be careful though, you may get scared of the pilot course’s syllabus within 30 minutes in your first class ... 😂😂🤣🤣
Hats off to pilot & crew members , i saw heavy thunder storm , bangkok night flight shaking plane bcs of turbulance , tighten seat belts , & silent passengers ...landed safe thank god & pilot also.
Let’s see. Of all the great accomplishments for which you can receive clapping. I’d say this one is the best. Game winning score for championship win! Totally awesome. An awesome performance with your voice and a guitar. Pretty cool 👍 Bringing a massive airliner down safely in extreme weather so everyone doesn’t die. While you may not get the large volume of a stadium and national tv. It is by far THE BEST CLAPPING EVER!
still remember one of my trip from Singapore to Malaysia. landing gone horribly wrong, too fast, heavy rain and thunderstorm then go around, come back second attempt no rain nothing.
Hey! I want our favorite airline to put in tail cameras like they have! Very cool! I never tire of flying. It's always impressive to watch these pros at work--those who design, build, fly, control traffic, maintain aircraft--supreme cooperation and harmony among people. If all human institutions worked that well we would have a happy world.
Aleisha Carter But but but it was the autopilot and then the pilots who flew the plane safely, God just created the bad weather and stood up watching. Why not thank the engineers who worked hard to design and program the autopilot software and the pilots for their good work instead?
mfofendy Look up Ryanair hard landings, and Ryanair hard landings will be the only ones you see... Great, thanks for that. Air Uganda have a very old fleet by your logic they must have the best pilots so?
I've never understood why the A380 has thrust reversers on just TWO of its four engines. You would think that a plane of that magnitude would need all the help it could get when slowing down!
The A380 has brakes so powerful it doesn't even need thrust reversers however regulation says they had to have at least two, due to weight issues they could only afford to put on two of them, but also because the wings are so large, the outer engines hang over the runway, so they could ingest foreign bodies or blow them into the fuselage :)
***** The A380 has only two reversers because of its wing span and if the outer engines have reverse function too, the risk of FOD (foreign object damage) increases greatly as the wings have a great span. The A380 has good brakes but for SOP, they never use the maximum, the will usually set it to Low or Medium in the autobrake system depending on runway conditions. In fact because the wing area is so large, the A380 does not need to land any faster than any other airliners such as the A330, so even for something that big and heavy, it doesn't have to be going at a greater speed to create sufficient lift to land and flare.
Robert Allen There is no such thing as a “bad pilot” every pilot that got accepted into an airline has many years of experience, was kind of stupid to say honestly
As someone who is terrified of flying, I’m happy to kiss the pilot and the ground to land safely. A clap shows appreciation. Let them do it ffs it hurts nobody. Just like you give a wave or a thank you to the bus driver.
Nice video...don't cheapen it with an inaccurate title. There was some convective activity and a CB nearby (as evidenced by a couple of lightning flashes) but this wasn't close to a "severe storm". NOAA and the NWS describe the criteria of a "severe thunderstorm" and this wasn't close. Thanks for the ride none the less.
Your being a tad pedantic no? Says heavy storm, not severe. Looked heavy not severe to me. Unless the channel has gone and changed the description for you I would say that in future you shouldn't cheapen your comments by putting your words into other peoples mouths.

Pilots just do that because they always failed when they were kids and when they did something good no one claps
Just once during the applause, I want to hear the captain get on the loudspeaker and say, "thank you, thank you very much..."
puffnstuff4004 in an Elvis Presley voice uh huh huh
lol
puffnstuff4004 capt would not hear the clapping though with door shut 😀

Shoutout to Airbus engineers! Thank you for your hard work and talent for making this great plane possible.

Dino Pizza you fold
Wheel😂
no its call the yoke and on a airbus they fly with a joy stick :-) no stering weel
it was an ILS CAT III landing, the pilot likely did not need his hands on stick, thats what OP is referencing
hahaha you
I clap when the thing gets in the air and stays there

Beautiful. I loved watching the airflow over the wing, especially when the spoilers were deployed after landing. Thank you for sharing.

He stuck that like a champ.

Weather issue or long flight.

Had a feeling it was German before I checked. I noticed Germans always give applause on landing, it's nice
I also applauded on touchdown. I couldn't help it!
Sam Pochin .. Russians and Central Asians also applaud after safe landing

I love when I get a seat near the wing where I can see all the action happen!
Ausgezeichnete Landung trotz des Sturms, den Erfolg immer für Lufthansa !
Everyone is saying about the clapping but every British flight I've been on people have clapped when we landed
Talking *
Must be Ryanair.... Not on BA hun ;)
ThatTeenGirl Budget british flights maybe, have never heard clapping on a BA flight.
ThatTeenGirl that's weird, I most of the time flies with British Airways, and it was only one time someone clapped...
impressive ILS system landing.... Ken Ramnath Director CELINE intl Wall Street, NYC
are you the wolf?
I loved so much the water spray during landing passing between spoilersand flaps
A very beautiful photography and beautiful scenes. Other videos please.
Phwoar, look at the big flaps on that German bird....
STREWTH, MATE.
German bird?
Is it German really? I would never have guessed mate!
Stacey McGrath The Airbus (the plane factory) is from France, but Lufthansa (the company that operate this plane) is from Germany. So not so German Bird right?
Nicholas Santoso Actually the A380 is from Germany, France, UK, Spain and several other EU countries, not forgetting some imports from the US.
I would've peed my pants! I have a huge fear of planes. I have to go on one in October of this year. Any tips for fears please?

He's right. Either alcohol or a Xanax. Just don't mix the two.
+Lioness Es I'm 14 so I don't think that will be happening but thanks anyway!😂

+Bananas eat Tacos they don't give plane type ratings after a theory exam and 6 hours of training like with cars lol
The pilots have nerves of steel and great skill - They make it look easy (sure the autopilot helped but still) - Hats of to these guys!
Very cool you can actually see the dynamics of lift over the top of the wing surfaces
I guess I failed to see the "Severe" part of that approach
As said previously in the comments, visibility was very close to safe minimums and considering all other comments agree to the 'severe' part, i think your missing somthing...

RDS An ILS Landing in low visibility with rain affecting the view too. Shut the hell up ... you obviously have no idea what you are talking about
Why the clapping?
The conditions vs the A380, enough said.....

lol
Jeff H. I bet Bruce doesn't go to parties lol

flaps up beautiful Landing beautiful Landing good job to the captain

Santhosh S exactly!
Exactly, the pilot cannot hear so whats the point.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one. Any landing you can use the aircraft again is an excellent one.
Stop clapping noobs
I thought same thing. I don't recall even seeing any wing flex. Looked pretty smooth outside of some rain
+DjRichardNL Self-entitled people don't clap, cool people do!
Clapping is an act of respect ... you didn’t know that? Go back to school and stop complaining
I really love that flaps sound at 0:30
awesome quality
That's one bad ass pilot who knows his or her skills. Kudos to the pilot.
Just look at all that laminar flow... Beautiful.
Beautiful well designed big Bird.....
Awesome landing in almost zero visibility. I love flying!
How did it feel to have the outside of your plane battered by rain and barely can see anything?
Wow, that's like a hurricane or something. Really a cool video.
Totally Impressive Landing!!! Today's automated computer technology can do so many wonders.
Even the pilot were clapping, CAT 3 landing awesome
Having done some "Phunny Phlights" in the Services, I'd say that trip was jolly good. Definitely able to enjoy lunch.
I love this!!
Technology aerodynamic engineering that is put into the wing construction is incredible
It amazes me the size of theses a380s those flaps are huge there just such a big aircraft...
