Did some rim riding up on 105 Saturday. 1 year smoke free anniversary coming up Feb 21.
Old video luke. But it ment a lot to know your history. I know you don't know me but i also lost my mother in law because of cancer. And i feel you man.
Doesn't sound bad. Thanks for watching Scott.
It's a killer pack, no doubt. I hate that it won't stand up though. Haha It's not that big of a deal though... Haha
Thanks for watching my friend. Enjoy the weekend.
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for taking the time to share this with us! :)
Really cool! I love hiking around in the Pisgah National Forest and especially around Linvile Gorge. I try to go up there as often as possible. Thank you for showing your adventure!
-Tanner
Thank you greatly my friend! That was a fun trip. We will return there later this fall/winter once the bugs go away. :) Thanks for watching.
This was awesome, And the nature around there is just amazing. I wish I were there
Pisgah is some of the best mountain biking in the world! Its practically a tragedy how few people know about the gems hidden in western NC!
Hey there Trey,
I tell you what, I have seen guys ride trails out there that I would never even consider on a bike. haha Heck I may have seen you out there.
Be well my friend.
- Luke
love your energy..good positive attitude without all the pretentiousness of outdoor "experts"
dubprocesslbc Thank you my friend, I appreciate your kind words. I follow this simple premise when it comes to everything I do;
No BS!
Cheers.
- Luke
I think you hit it on the head dubprocesslbc . That is why I watch this channel too. Luke doesn't attempt to belittle his viewers or come across better than them. Just about getting out and enjoying the outdoors and a some good tips to make it a better time.
Consider it done! I have been asked about that recently as well and next week I will show off some tents for you guys. Thanks for the suggestion my friend. Enjoy the weekend.
At first I thought you might be annoying because you were so chipper, but I watched the entire video and began to appreciate your positive attitude. Can't wait to get out in the outdoors in 2014.
Haha Thanks Preston. Have a great year brother.
Haha That is how it always works out for myself. I've met so many people who have seen them; one day it will be my turn! If you ever get some pictures I would love to see them.
i love the big side door on the tent and the fact you can put it up from the inside
One of my favorite tents. Too bad they don't make it anymore.
Wow this is the first time I've seen the young you. I discovered your channel about 2 years ago and I have to say your energy really hasn't changed much. I'm thinking about taking a trip up there for a camping vacation and discovered this video. I love watching your adventures and enjoying watching what I cant do because I don't have enough time to take off work.
I started smoking when I was very young. I swiped a pack of Basic menthol lights from my mom and kept smoking from then on for a about ten years and switched to vaping about 6 months ago. I can already feel the difference.
I got lost one night and drove........although it was night, the beauty of what I could see, stars, etc. beautiful....I saw little glowing flecks in the air and thought they were like plankton. then I was told they didn't have anything like that.....Thank you for this clip! I enjoyed it and my memory! Praise God!!!
Had a great time. I love some of the really nice places you camp. No spiders, ok?
I never get tired of watching your vids. very well done... keep up
Hi Luke....you make me laugh so hard, and there is so many times I need a good laugh. When you were talking about the spider and was thinking about burning the tent down I laughed ,and knew exactly how you felt because I’m terrified of them! I was having a hamburger and looked down on my arm,and there was a huge spider I brushed it off so hard with my hamburger hand and it flew across the table and hit my friend,so funny!!! Then I sent her to find that damned spider. When you talked about your sun burnt nose ..again I found that very funny. Need those laughs ty! Love your videos, the sunset that night was so stunning and just gorgeous. I really liked that tent also. Looked very sturdy and roomy. Till the next video...🕷🕸👍☕️
Great videos! I literally watch one everyday. Keep doing your thing. Great job.
I'd love to reply to some of these comments but due to the 'awesome' changes on youtube I can't do that.
can bears smell food in your breath? spicy food?
I've been a subscriber for a few years or so, but first time I've seen the green van. You've downgraded since. Lol
Thanks pal for watching and commenting.
When it comes to food you have a lot of options.
Rice, sausage and cheese (like I had) are really light and cheap too. Mountain House isn't too badly price for what you are getting. Instant oatmeal is cheap and light too. Skip the BBq beans though...very heavy! Also you can make biscuits too with little weight and cost.
Take care and have fun.
I save those small summer sausages and small cheeses I get during the holidays. They are a GREAT snack in the wilderness as you know..
That's the truth brother.
Thank you so much my friend. I really appreciate that. Be well and have fun.
I wanted a fire but I didn't have it in me to process and gather. That hike and the sun killed me. Haha Next time I'm going to do something easier. Haha
With the Camera I have to admit I am enjoying it more and more. I use a Mac and this camera and the Mac have issues. I will discuss these in a future 'answers' video.
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. Take care.
Nature is so beautiful.
I imagine raccoons would be another creature to be concerned about getting into the bear bag lol
i remember my first over night trip i had never been camping before but some how i convenced my parents to let me stay at my lean-to fort thing (we had given it the name of fort wizard chair because there was a large mossy rock with a picese of bark that made it look like a chair) i took my dog with me and i loved it !
Brother that sounds like an awesome trip!
I'm glad you had so much fun.
- Luke
sister
I went camping over the fourth with my family, brought 4 stoves and only used one the whole weekend, the RUCAS. It rocks, I love it. I may leave my other stoves at home the next camping trip.
Well I haven't quit smoking but the e cigs are great for backpacking for a few reasons if youre a smoker.Much easier to carry than several packs of cigs.Wont burn your tent down, lol.great back up out in the woods if you run out of cigs...or lose your lighter, lol.I've dropped mine in the water and it still worked.Nice vid!
Awesome! Thanks for taking us along.
Looks like the very spot I camped at myself. I love Linville Gorge, so beautiful and if you are a hiker this place always makes you want to see what's around the next bend. Did have a black bear encounter at night so put up the food. The brown mountain lights are pretty incredible!
Manch0vy That place is certainly incredible but I have to say that I have never seen the brown mountain lights. I've been out there a hundred times and never seen anything. You say you've seen them yourself?
- Luke
TheOutdoorGearReview I grew up in Hickory NC which is about an hour away from Brown Mountain. As a kid growing up in the 70's, I remember going to see the "lights". On my first trip we saw them and they still stick in my memory. I've been back many times since and have yet to see them again. I guess it was beginners luck.
Well, I have no idea if this will show up but here goes.....
I came across your vids by accident today, and that made me create a new account. They are cool and not the same old bushcraft this, and bug out that. It's great to see that people still camp in the real woods but use a few little things to make it fun. Like a tent...Great vids bro!
Thanks CJ, appreciate it brother.
Take care of yourself.
Stoked to backpack in the Pisgah NF this fall and winter 🙌
Like the episode of The Brady Bunch in Hawaii with Greg had the spider 🕷 up his chest .
I just drove from Virginia to that area and stayed at the Seven Foxes Cabins. You are right, this is a beautiful area for camping, hiking or even a little bushcraft. Cant remember the name of the trail me and the Mrs hiked but it went south and ended at the Foot Hills trail / toxacany river. Didnt bring the tent so the Mrs. wasnt to fond of the tarp shelter. We headed back and the last two or three miles were in pitch darkness. Needless to say she wore out a pair of CR123's. :) *Subbed*
Thanks Vivaren. Have a terrific weekend.
Funk....I'm still thinking about Spiders....GAH!
When I was setting up the tent it must have gotten in or climbed into my pack.....
Thanks for watching my friend. If you smoke and you want to be a bit more healthy the e-cig is a great alternative. Of course we all have our vices so to each their own.
Take care pal.
Thanks my friend. I really appreciate that. I'll keep the videos coming!!! Thanks for watching and for the support. :)
I'm having a hard time not dropping money on that Osprey Stratos. I need a new daypack. As always, awesome video. It looks like you had a great time, Luke!
I know this is old, but Luke I hate peas too! Got that same stove and a ton of Mountain House meals!
I never thought of that. UV disinfecting water. I have large uv disinfectant oven for my barbering gear.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting my friend. I do appreciate it. Definitely a beautiful area. Very lucky I get to enjoy it so much. I love the Ribz pack...incredible piece of gear. If you are interested I can get you a discount code.
You are so right about the cold beer! I wish I had one...or three that night. :) Can't wait to see your knife Mods.
Thank you brother! The pleasure is all mine!
Vaping for 3 years, make my own juice and it's costing me under $45 A YEAR :) no battery's period. Made my own unit :)
How do you make your own juice. I would like to start making mine too. Thanks for any info
ribs = fanny pack turned around backwards lol.......just butsin ya hops man looked like a great trip...im in NC and would like to someday make it to pnf
You've seen the lights? That is awesome. I've been out there probably a 100 times or more over the years and have never seen them. One day I will. :) Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
CouchPotatoBear the food precautions are the same for toiletries (deodorant, toothpaste, etc). I put it in a scalable zip lock freezer bag and bear bag it with my food, 150 feet downwind. Any scents you want to keep away from where you are sleeping.
The Pisgah National Forest is in Western NC.
Safe Awesome Time!!
Three Cheers to your nice video ... !!
Good job on your videos lots of great commentary and footage and of coarse gear reviews cheers
Thank you so much Jason.
Be well my friend.
- Luke
Ribz packs are great. I bought the model before they did the upgrades. Just a great pack. I use mine a lot for bike riding. O yeah you picked a beautiful camping spot. That van is pretty sweet! Great vid!
Nice video. I lived in Asheville back in the 80's & 90's, but didn't spend much time in Pisgah National Forest - Going to make a point to get back there and do a little wilderness camping.
4:17 Dammnnn that's a "trouty" looking river!
I am ready for the rain to stop!!! I must get out! :)
Thanks for the recommendation buddy. That sounds awesome!
As for Hammocks; I have used them some but I am far from an expert with them. I might have to use one the next time I go out. Checking out your video now.
Enjoy the weekend my friend.
thought I had found all the great gear/hiking/camping channels! Guess I was wrong! Keep the great videos comin brother!
Thank you very much David. Greatly appreciated.
Hey, I would really like to see your technique for sharpening knives, I find it interesting to see each person's tips and tricks
You are very welcome my friend. I can't wait to do it again. :)
Haha you sir made my day ! you're so enthusiast
Thank you brother.
Be well.
- Luke
That tent looks very much like the Black Diamond HiLight.
I had one of those vans. Great for ski trips. Just park it at the base of the mountain and take naps when exhausted.
But it being a Dodge, it had endless mechanical and electrical problems.
The MPG was also horrible.
solobackpacking Did you have the big v8 or the small one?
I've heard horrible things about the big one. Ours has the small v8 and it does pretty good on gas and hasn't had any issues so far. 177,000+ miles. Other than this van, I wouldn't own a Dodge.
Cheers.
- Luke
TheOutdoorGearReview I am not sure... I think it was a small engine because it struggled climbing steep mountain roads.
The contractors in my area that usually use those Dodge chassis van are quickly replacing them with Nissan NV series. All of a sudden the Dodges disappeared and there are these huge Nissans. Never even seen them before this year. Maybe some company will start customizing them. Personally I like the mechanics, electronics and engine that is put in the Tacomas. But I don't want a pickup.
At this point I am considering a Landcruiser with a Airstream Sport trailer. But its all just a pipe dream considering the expense. The Landcruiser is $70K and the Airstream is $40k.
Another awesome video. That happens to be one of my first overnight hikes. Back in the days when all I brought was a blanket and a bottle of water.
Thank you so much my friend for watching and commenting. This is certainly beautiful country out here.
Haha Shhhhh, don't talk about my pipe! Honestly I think if you are breathing anything in it can't be good for you. Personally I gave it up and gave my ecigs away. It really didn't do for me what I wanted it to. Chasing the smoke in other words.
Greetings from MN! I found your videos earlier this winter. It sure has made my winter more enjoyable!
Thank you my friend, I do appreciate that.
Get a measuring cup! One that comes in the mess kits, they sell them separately, then you won't have to guess what 16oz. is..
I rather just guess. That's how I roll.
Just about cool enough to get out there this year! Thanks for getting me amped for my upcoming trip to Pisgah!!!!
ejuice does not and has not ever contained anything used in antifreeze. That was a rumor started by the big tobacco companies to deter people from trying ecigs. There are 4 ingredients in ejuice nicotine being the only thing "bad" in it which is the equivalent of caffeine and is not the cancer causing agent in cigarettes. but anyways lol awesome to see another vaping backpacker super awesome. Love your videos!!
Thank you my friend. :)
Take care of yourself.
It's really strange indeed. I've met those who have been 100 times like yourself and never seen the slightest light yet this last time I met a couple from Brazil of all places and they came out. You just have to come at the right time, be patient, and don't ask for the mountains to show you them haha.
I'm hoping to one day get a telescopic lens/dslr to capture footage of them.
Well prepared and informative video for passionate hikers/trekkers. Highly recommendable please enjoy watching 👍 👍 👍
gorgeous place
Great video thanks for sharing your trip with us

gorgeous nature there. I hope I can visit someday! Living far away...
nice vid of my favorite place on earth... LVG! but i must say you didn't even go into the gorge! lol you just stayed along the side of the road somewhere. next time I would suggest going down by the river to experience the gorge. cheers.
Iv watched everyone of your camping videos, this one is my favorite, keep it up!
Great video I actually watched the whole thing. Well done
Great job. Loving the overnights and gear loadout vids, keep em coming. I frequently wear a boonie in the woods to keep the sun off my head. I am a veteran but it is still just a hat.
Thanks for this wonderful video!!!I love hiking so this was a treat for me!!!!
You mention what your going to do with your trash. For The standard camp it should have - first thing at camp dig four pits. a 'wet' pit for cooking refuse, a 'dry' pit for dry trash. a fire pit and a toilet pit. The toilet pit should be somewhere down wind and down the water course. soft earth and an intrenching tool are left to cover the waste. with your wet and dry pits you should take home with you plastics and non bio-degradable items such as styrofoam cups and trays. carry out with you what you can. before leaving your camp for good fill in your pits and leave no footprint.I'm enjoying your films. all the best man...happy trails...
Can you do a video to show what gear did you bring with you during this hike and how you packed it in this osprey stratos 36 backpack ? It would be really cool because I have the same pack and can't fit as much gear as you look to have ! Thank you !
Haha I love the Ram Van, the Ribz Pack and that camp site. :) Thanks for watching my friend.
I think the Nannies are worse than the goats if you ask me. I might have to explain that one in a private message. Be safe out there Rallohe.
That is the Ribz Front pack. SUPER awesome gear!
Haha Thanks amigo. :) Three cheers to you for watching. Haha
You have some great energy
It's called the Ribz Pack and it's badass! Before you buy one I can get you a discount code if you are interested.
I freaking love it. It truly rocks!
Thanks Brady.
Nice video Luke. Thanks for sharing your trip. My wife and I just are in the process of buying a house near the Pisgah Nat'l Forest. We are very close to Curtis Creek campsites. I can't wait to do some exploring in the area. We are relocating from Pa. Thanks for the video. Enjoy & be safe!
You must have been along the Old 105, right?
About those Ticks, my friend...Permethrin is your friend. Get yourself some Sawyer's Permethrin spray and treat your hiking clothes; pants and shirts. Spray them down liberally on the outside surfaces...NOT on inside surfaces that are next to your skin. Hang them and let them dry 24 hours before wearing. The treatment will last over 5 - 6 clothes washes before you need to treat them again.
I treat my hiking / fly fishing clothes each season before heading out...I am rarely bothered by ticks and live in the state where you are in this video. I also sprayed the outside of my backpack.
you are definitely an inspiration to all of us.. well me(green horn).. two tents.. but no season 4 tent... like how u do show us you in the tent.. so we get the whole feel.. plus i love the cheese and sausage snack.. where can i get them?
TravelDude1981 Thanks brother. It's nice to meet you by the way.
As for the meets/cheeses, they came from a company call figis. I would recommend getting only what you think you will use in a few months. They don't seem to last long.
Cheers.
- Luke
Exactly! Well said David.
You're one of my favourite youtubers, and your videos are very entertaining. Thank you for these amazing videos! :-)
amazing spider
WoW…how I miss the mountains…I can't wait to make it home someday..
It's time to return my friend.
i've been thinking about it…but you have given me a new drive to be out in the wild and to do some camping….:)
Really enjoying your videos found you a couple of days ago subscribed thanks
