As the series go on the intros get longer and funnier because the point of the show is the humour and not the game.
Disagree with that framing somewhat. Sure, no one cares who wins or loses but if it was just about the humour and not the game then the original format of 8 out of 10 Cats would have been the one that got the prime time Friday night slot on Channel 4 (instead of being relegated to E4 in the middle of the week as it was). It was a combination of the humour AND the game that made the "does Countdown" version more popular than the original
@@BigAlCapwn I think it didn't help though that a lot of the humour in the original Cats did rely on the viewer knowing the current news and _happenings_ and obviously that means it aged quite poorly. Cats Does Countdown is a more accessible format for the comedy.

I do enjoy your interest in the game as well as the comedy . Susie is an expert from the OED. ( which does list some American variants) who became a regular on Countdown many years ago . She has written several books on the origins of words and language which gives Jimmy plenty of material for his introductions .

The great Harry Anderson taught me what a Geek was when I was little, he would talk about Geek magic and how it was performed as he performed it, the world misses Harry Anderson. I know there are a few comments telling you you're missing what Jimmy is doing while the clock goes, but i wouldn't take them too seriously. Those segments are designed knowing full well that viewers will be playing the game while they're on. There's usually nothing all that in depth happening. Generally you can follow it pretty easily with a few quick glances. Certainly no need to rewind.
