My experience is that you can get work without a degree, but it is only going to help you get interviews and later promotions if you do have a degree. I have always been about learning things because i am interested in them rather than attaining certifications. My observation though is that people with certifications get taken seriously from the outset. My last SQL job, i practically begged my boss to let me write a couple of key functions to be used in queries. I ended up staying with that company for two years writing SQL code and optimising other peoples queries.
This was incredibly useful!! Thank you for making this video. As a data analyst myself, I aspire to one day become a data scientist like yourself. I would love to see more videos related to data science such as the field, truths/myths of data science and analytics, how to analyze data and communicate it well, etc. Just some ideas! Thanks again.
It seems like a great career. Iâm a financial analyst right now but I already know SQL and Power BI. Iâd like to learn Python and R so I can move to a role where I can combine my existing finance knowledge with data science
I subscribed after watching 3 of your funny and high-quality interview videos. Watching your Tech Lead intro reminded me that that was a smart move. Keep it up, Joma!
so far, these are some great videos, but it sounds like when say "data science", you really mean someone with a very strong sql background and some basic stats which would be a BI analyst. I guess saying "data science" sounds cooler
I have a Bachelor in Design of Information Systems, which Master should I choose if I want to get good pay and interesting job opportunities? :) (I want to work with new/upcoming and interesting areas in the tech industry)
Sup Joma, been following for a bit now, and love the videos, you give good insight about the tech world! Just a suggestion you should make a video about people who want to change their career into the tech field, and what type of other jobs other then being a software engineer, or a developer! Anyways keep it up!!
When he said: "even if McDonald's is losing money he didn't care due to his customers" I pause the video & had to like & scribe.đđŻđ People like this does consumers a great Justice, unfortunately there isn't enough of us in the worldđ JUST SAYING
it looks like you did a triple major at waterloo. I feel like this and your internships helped you get past the "master's requirement" for an entry level data scientist position?
Can I say that depends on the context of a job a data scientist does not necessarily require skills in predictive modeling? I've heard many saying that a data scientist MUST require skills in predictive modeling in order to be qualified a 'true' data scientist. Just curious to find out what the end goal of a data scientist is.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and I've been working for 4 years now in the BPO industry (Learning and Development, Technical Support and Data Analytics). Now, I just want to do something I really love, and that is something related to Data Science. I guess I would be watching all your videos to fuel my interest. :D
Pretty awesome content. Iâm trying to switch out of real estate/finance and was considering software development but it seems like data science is a much better fit for my business background. Thanks!
Thanks Joma for making this video. I had learnt a lot which is definitely going to help in future. Bdw, when you will make a video 'How did I got internship in Facebook'. Please make that video soon. I am eagerly waiting for that. Thanks!
Excellent video! Nice to hear from someone that is actually a data scientist. If you have the time, you should make a video about how to prepare for an interview or what would you ask in an interview.
I have been told if you get a master's you can get a government job that pays up to $80,000 in California but tbh idk how true that is but you should look into it.
@@davidbui2662 Hey man hope you see this but I'm doing good I've actually been employed for almost 2 years now in a government related job. I'm not doing something that's related to my major, which is fine, although eventually I would like to see myself in some sort of position doing analysis type work such as data, programming, financial, etc.
What you said is totally true! I just got a new job in data science in finance. I would definitely recommend to refresh statistical modeling knowledge as well.
Thank you so much for this video. I've been dancing around what career path I want to follow but there were no clear instructions or videos on expectations for this particular discipline. God bless you. :)

No I dont, just a bachelors and tons of training, courses and hands on experience. If im being honest, Im perfectly ok at where im at because I work on a lot of personal projects in my free time and the plan is to have one of those take off and leave the corporate world at some point. In the meantime, Im at a decent level and pay without too many responsibilities that allow me to have tons of free time to work on my own stuff. You kept this short and to the point and 100% truthful. Good job
I love the references to TechLead! So funny! The can flip and the "well, that's just how things are gonna be..." I literally lol'd!

I'm a musician, I wonder if I could combine my music knowledges with data science
Do you think learning to program python/java would be better than learning statistics for a job in finance/data science?
needed this ... internship coming up
Good stuff! Definitely taking note of your recommendations
Thank You, Thank You, Joma! Great tips, as always.
OMG i died when you said "That's how things gonna be from here on now" .. TechLead

Haha, That was good.
data science without actual predictive modelling is just data analysis, change my mind
Data Science without actual predictive modelling is just nothing.
Thank you for making this video. Very helpful!!!!!!!!!
Love your videos and channel!
If I study Physics.. can i get into Data Science field?
yes
For a second, with the drink, I thought you were making fun of an untitled channel
