This was really entertaining. And the "paper hanger" is a terrific actor. His voice is really familiar but would be great to find his name so I can IMDb him.

Were colors originally so weak?

No, they fade out. Sometimes the roll has a few seconds of sample colors at the start. They fade the same way as the rest of the film and you can recover the true colors later on.
