      People like that are the Karen's of Veganism. I'm not 100% vegan. I consider myself plant based (80%) working towards being 100% plant based. I grew up in super meat eating family in the Midwest. We bought a grass fed cow every year.
      It was not hard to give up beef and pork. Chicken is on it way out. Fish and Eggs are my weakness. I love tofu because it doesn't taste like meat. Fast food grosses me out.

    Hopefully those negative comments were trolls, because that is all nonsense. I always eat at restaurants that have both vegan and non-vegan food options. One of the reasons I stopped following most of the vegans on youtube and instagram is because of that nonsense (and that most of them don't eat properly, then wind up back on animal flesh anyways). I subscribed to you guys, because I like that you show non-vegans (and vegans) all these wonderful options that they wouldn't have known about otherwise.

  • @madelonnorth4395
    @madelonnorth4395 Před 3 lety +53

    It's really nice to hear you guys talk about gatekeeping in veganism! I'm a PhD student and my thesis is on meat consumption, and my first study we just published was the preferred definition of veganism, and what we found is that the people who were most likely to say that to be vegan you must be perfect in every part of it were actually vegan themselves. We're doing the lifestyle a disservice by holding people to such perfect standards, and I'm really glad you're calling them out on it!!

    • @davidthescottishvegan
      @davidthescottishvegan Před 3 lety +3

      100% agree and I am not a perfect vegan because there's foods I have bought then discovered when I got home and they have contained an animal based ingredient but because I don't believe in food waste I usually have eaten it. Thankfully it doesn't happen too often because it hasn't happened since the beginning of the pandemic and mainly it was in my early vegan transition days.

    • @ethicallybasedexomnivore
      @ethicallybasedexomnivore Před 3 lety +1

      Exactly. A vegan lifestyle isn't about being "perfect". Nobody's perfect so to expect that from even vegans is impossible; especially considering the fact that we're forced to live in a very speciesist society and world. I ran across a post in a vegan group on Facebook from one of those purist individuals and it was so condescending I had to point out that by their standards I couldn't even call myself vegan even though I do everything to my abilities to avoid contributing to animal exploitation but I live in a small town in Western Oklahoma where every restaurant is fast food and FAR from vegan or even plant based. It's an oilfield town where hunting is a big hobby and we don't even have a single farmer's market. The closest one is the next town over but without a car there's literally no way I can go so I'm left with Walmart to do my shopping so my options are extremely limited but I make it work. But even if I were to only ever eat at a vegan restaurant, only consume food from a garden, never were to harm an insect by accident, grew up in a vegan family from birth and were somehow able to totally, hypothetically, never harm a non human animal, etcetera I'd still have to earn money and taxes go to subsidies for animal agriculture and by purists' standards nobody would be vegan.
      They're ridiculous.

      I’m near Myrtle Beach, SC and there aren’t a whole heap of options. I used to live in VA and got spoiled. I’ve done plant-based a couple of times and have always failed, even with the numerous options I had surrounding me. I’m doing it again and going into it with this more laid-back mindset. I wish I had found their page when I first went plant-based back in 2017. Being where I am now with limited options and working with what’s available, I definitely see how much of an advantage I had when I was in VA. Gatekeeping is the worst thing to help promote veganism. Nobody wants to be attacked for not getting it 100% perfect.

    You’re guys’ speech about being vegan was so great!!! Like I realted and agreed so hard. It’s also important to know people intentions! A lot of my intention is environment and trying to be low impact, so let’s say I accidentally bought something that wasn’t vegan, I would try to give it to someone else who would want it. But if no one is around to eat it besides me. I would rather eat it then let it go to waste. I know that’s my personal thing, and I don’t judge others who don’t agree or do that. But it’s so hard to be in the vegan community because I always hesitate to tell people that because people are always judging my vegan “standards,” so I appreciated hearing that from people I look up to 💛😊✨

    As a vegan that used to work at fast-food chain. What you're actually doing is depleting their plant-based inventory. Thus causing the eatery to order more of the plant-based products and less animal products. Change doesn't happen overnight, but it can happen.

    Some people aren’t happy unless they can complain and/or shame others. My mother about 8 years ago would get eggplant tofu and loved it but since then it has been hard to find.

    Omg thank you for talking about vegan accessibility! And pets. And from my point of view, the more we demand and consume vegan options from non vegan companies the more supplies will meet demands.

    I love you guys so much! lol You're amazing. I did NOT know the chow mien and spring rolls were vegan at panda express! It's going to be like when they got the beyond burger at Carl's. The employees are going to know me by name. Haha! Thank you for your videos!

    The vegan gatekeepers are what gives vegan a bad name. They've co-opted the name vegan. Where I live it's a struggle to find vegan food out.

    I’m glad to see Super Deluxe is offering a fully vegan burger now. I live right near that location and a few years ago when they first opened, their buns weren’t vegan. They gave me an impossible burger on a bed of shredded lettuce (and nothing else!!) and I VOWED to never return. Might have to give them another try now!

    Before I was vegan, I used to eat at Panda Express about once a month, but I have not been in years. I didn't know they finally started to get with the times and go vegan with at least some items. Regarding the eggplant tofu... when I checked, it was made with oyster sauce, but again, that was years ago.

    Love this video!!! Some times I just want some yummy darn fast food lol. Love that you mentioned how some vegans are so judgmental that it makes others feel "less than" so they dont even want ro try. I eat no meat, and very little dairy and eggs. My husband eats a little of everything. I feel like every little thing helps. Anyway...love you guys!!!

    That's why I stopped being vegan I'm 2019, someone told me I wasn't vegan because I fed my husky chicken. I am now on my journey back to veganism but not labeling myself vegan because I don't want to deal with the vegan police and the vegan politics.

      Hopefully you can find a middle ground or come to peace w dealing w haters. You can have a lot of influence on those around you, so if they see you being a vegan that is living their best life, they are more likely to follow your lead. Don't let a couple perfectionists get in your way. You're never gonna please everyone anyway. All the best

    The chow mein is best when fresh. I’ve had it dry at so many locations but one location it was the most amazing thing. I think some places rush and don’t cook the noodles all the way so they don’t soak up the sauce well. I love these videos. Thanks guys!

      Tip get a side of teriyaki sauce. It makes it so your noodles aren’t dry.

    I applaud you guys for showing a variety of ways to eat Vegan. Whether it is adapting cultural dishes, developing new recipes or finding fast food options. I live in rural Australia and often cannot find ingredients listed by youtubers without ordering online, food deserts are a real thing! So the option is to order online and inevitably increase my carbon footprint by seeking out VEGAN specific ingredients or eat the fresh produce I can get from local farmers \ eat the vegan meals on local restaurants menus, which are scarce but present. I would rather reinforce in the local community that plant based meals are desired than give my money to ethically ambigious companies on Amazon. How else are organisations going to change without demand? I appreciate the ways in which you explore your veganism, I don't have the same access but I can glean ideas. Also I have a pet cat that eats fresh kangaroo meat: kangaroos have become a pest in Aus due to colonial agricultural practices, and their over breeding is condemned by indigenous First nations Australians, and while I obviously find Kangaroos amazing animals, sustainable land maintenance based on the advisement of Australias First nations people has informed how I care for my pet.

    I've had the eggplant tofu dish, but not at my local Panda Express. They still don't have it. I've had it on a road trip from NorCal to SoCal. It is good, but the eggplant was a bit overcooked and if I remember correctly it was a little oily, BUT it was flavorful and filled me up! Hoping all locations have this option sooner than later!

  • @giovannamengarelli9761

    A little late to comment but oh well…… love this all of your videos and your comments on veganism. I’ll admit, I tried to go Vegan and it was just way too hard for me to give up certain foods and find alternatives HOWEVER, there are some vegan alternatives that I have exclusively replaced in my diet, as well as eating Daily Harvest weekly to replace some meals each week. It’s hard but not impossible! Thank you for showing people like me that! 🌱 🪴
