☀️ *Here is the wiring diagram and parts list I mentioned in the video* downtoearthhomesteaders.com/resources/solar-power/
I understand living off grid this is something you absolutely need. The question is, these are all very expensive pieces so by the time you need to replace the parts would it actually pay for itself versus the option of hooking onto the grid? I see a few people in my area doing this but with the convenience and reliability also playing into it, the savings would need to be substantial to even consider it. My electric bill averages around 75 a month and would take a very long time to pay for 20k worth of solar.
We do it because we want to. It is not about the money. We like independence.
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving i think you misunderstood my question. I totally understand why you do it and applaud you for doing so. I was asking for myself. I could install solar but have dependable and fairly reasonable priced electricity where I live. I was wondering if you could actually pay for the system versus what it would cost say paying 100$ a month within the life of the equipment?
Sorry. Right I misunderstood. Probably 15-20 years I would bet.
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving And I do not think anyone can arbitrariy shut your power off. That is worth so very much. I know I cannot afford your complete setup but want to start and build it up.
I'm never going to live off grid but I love watching your videos. Your enthusiasm is infectious
For anyone wondering. I've calculated around $15k for this setup.
Batteries-$800 per x 8= 6400
Solar panels -$400 per 10=4000
Chargers/controllers= around $1500
Wiring/etc- around 700.
Very rough numbers other than batteries and panels. But close to or over $13k-17k
Battleborn stuff is among the most expensive out there. Not everyone is sponsored, so do your homework before rushing into a system install. I recommend San Tan Solar for panels; best prices around, but just a small portion of the cost of a system.
@@rixtrix11 I was just adding the price of the total setup for anyone wondering. It's a pet peeve of mine when I watch videos talking about products and there is no price breakdown. Especially for something that is so expensive. I'm not commenting on the products themselves or choosing a system.
Didn't mean this to be directed to you personally[Althouse now I see it could be taken that way. Sorry]. I was only wanting to recommend to anyone considering a system to take time to do a LOT of research into their needs and costs. Thank for listing the pricing! Really surprised when Marty upgraded to this as he was always so frugal in the past.
Check out Red and Robin Off Grid for their $6400, 6000w split phase (120/240V) system. A little more work involved, but much less out of pocket expense. Just another angle to solar power...
You the real mvp. It’s a pet peeve of mine as well
Bless you and your family!!!! Great JOB!!! Can't wait to implement this system to my house. Thanks!!!!
This is over the top. I just bought my first duel batteries!! I'll wear out the tape watching this. Well done!
Superb installation! Thank you very much for sharing all the functional and design details with us! Sincere regards!
Thank You for the 25 cent Solar tour, I see that it can get complicated real fast and that having a reliable dealer to help is important. I appreciate all of your youtube posting from Sunny south Florida. Be Wall and Gods speed!
Great video Martin! Thanks for explaining your system!
I've watched at least 30 video's probably more and in just 2 of your video's I truly understand how to set up a solar system THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very impressive Marty. Lots of good stuff you shared.
At $800 per battery and $15,000 for the whole package, no wonder he's over the top with enthusiasm for this company if they gave it to him for a stellar review. They weren't selling many at this price and were desperate to try to get traction on their overpriced products so we not.
Victron is an excellent product and not overpriced like the "Battle Born" brand however.
Awesome job guys, simply amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for taking the time to introduce me to your solar powered system. It was super interesting. Now to start researching. ✌️
I am so glad you did this video. Typically it doesn't much interest me because we are on grid, but another channel I follow is now off grid and stuck at the point of understanding what all he needs to order to get his system setup. Timing of this video is amazing. Thank you on behalf of Keeping It Dutch. ❤️
This channel is really fun to watch, I like it when you suggest the next video, really missed that,,, 😀 I learn alot from your electrical episodes.. keep smiling 😃🙂
You are such an inspiration, and fantastic learning source. Don't every worry about repeating yourself; I know you've explained a bunch of this before, but hearing it again is just reinforcement. And your positive vibe is infectious. Keep it going, hope to see you on gab one day!
Thanks for sharing these great video's and actually demonstrating the how's, what's, where's and when's on everything you are doing. I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada, keep up the great work !
Martin thanks for sharing your system/setup.I i like your practical way of explaining how things operate.
it is quite the system and does the job most of the year
great tutorial of your system thank you for showing me your system it’s a lot to take in but there is step by step instructions. i bet you will be glad to get your tractor fixed and the shed back on the ground. thank you for bringing us along take care and see you soon
Very good detailed overview of your system. Thanks!!
Love it!! You definitely invested in great quality batteries.
love the zoom sounds. Great video
That was a pretty awesome run-through! I didn't understand what you were saying, but I'm sure when the time comes for me to set up a larger system, I'll be able to look back at it. Thank you for sharing!
I wish u have the whole video when u were settting up the whole system.... I was just going to upgade mines like the last upgrade u did and now u upgraded yours again... thanks for the video...

Nice upgrade, thank you for your video. All the best regards,
You really know what you are doing love the video......
Ok man, I'm ordering the Battle Born set up like yours for our cabin. Thanks for all the info and instruction. Battle Born said that you personally reimburse everything if there are issues, so it made me feel more comfortable about the situation. 🙏
Very impressive. Even more impressive is your understanding of all this.
I GUESS 'cause you have no idea
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.... For this.
We're getting close to purchasing our land and this type of info is extremely helpful. Hopefully we can meet up and I'll treat ya'll to lunch when we come out. Keep up the good work.
Sounds good.
very nice system guys. Love your build just amazing
Thank you for sharing your experience and information
Incredible!
Oh man On man ! there is serious stuff to learn here... Great video
Absolutely the most comprehensive off-grid video to date! OMG! I am about to replace the whole off-grid system that I installed in 2008! I did it on my own steam and it has done SO well!
Now, this is an upgrade about to happen! Thus I will have a new bit of knowledge I really need it!
My 2nd battery bank is dying! A gel bank making it over 7 years now!
Also looking for grants too... Which seem to require Certified electricians... If SO They must see your vids 1st!
Ya think?
~Jimmer from Vermont at the Canada Border!
Thank y'all. Blessings, julie
Thank you so much for the info. God bless
Well done!
Wow I need the same set up
You Da Man. Love the easy to follow Demo.
Good update! Thanks. It looks sp good. From a Scandinavian point of view I have no idea of the AWG sizes (we don't use that cable measurement) nor your voltage levels.
Hope you are all well, and good to see you again! 😊
Very impressive and well explained. Greetings from Costa Rica
Sounds great always love to learn some things news hope I can learn effectively
Thank you
Impressing. Very nice and clean setup. 👍
Awesome video brother! Ill be relying on this in the future when im wiring up my own.
Excellent video! The explanation of the (undocumented) need for RJ45 connection position was/is extremely useful!
Very cool system, well done.

...lookin' good, keep safe and have a great week..
Looking good. Glad to see you strapped the batteries to the wall in case of an earthquake.
One deep video… thanks!
Just found your channel through Keeping it Dutch. Looking forward to watching and learning.
I’m so glad they you came over to check out our channel. I hope to see you often in the comments!
Sean (Dutch) and Brandi were perfect guests. We had great conversations and just a lot of fun hanging out with them. They are genuinely great people. I put together a playlist of videos from when we first moved to our homestead to when we started building our cabin to help you get up to speed. I hope you enjoy them. Link👇

Been watching since you got to Idaho. Wow you guys have come a long way. Congrats.
Don't you worry about batteries and equipment getting too cold during the winter? Great set-up and explanation showing the interface with units and generator.
Love it all your living it my man hope I get to where you are one day
Awesome guys!! So great seeing more progress being done. Yes, summer demands lots of Outdoor projects. Did I miss Marty saying you would cover the stairs to the apartment? I would say that should be your next project after the woodshed, but that just me. 😃
Howdy JOHNSONS,
Thanks for the OFF-GRID explanation of your SOLAR Components
I am in the process of specifying a GRID TIED system
Thanks
COOP
...
well done!
Amazing video man, very inspiring! As far as I understand it's still impossible to go 100 % green in winter because of heating water and the house. Hope wind and solar will get more efficient soon and most of the people will live this way
100% green is possible with ENERPAK Solar Charge Maximizing Controller System. Electricity & Green Hydrogen.
That explain everything I love this techics you can light up a building with out have to pay light bill That is alsome fabulous 👌 excellente
Waww! That's impressive thank you 🙏🙏
impressive!
Very cool I could see a couple of things I would do differently. I would buy a large enough charge controller to handle the entire system. I have Cirrus truck camper and installed one solar panel and could add two more but for my needs one has worked just fine. I have the Victron 100/30 charge controller. I just got back from a 7400 mile trip and only used the generator twice because of the extreme heat. I did drive through Idaho by the way and when I got to Boise it was over 100+ and I had to run generator while I was waiting on oil change at the Ford dealership. We live in Florida and our house was built in 1999 so when I have a new roof installed I'm going solar. Down here we will be able to be 100% off grid and sell power back to FPL.
mantab pak martin 👍
AWESOME video a little complex. But gonna put in an order for your same system THANKS.
We like it a lot.
You got me into solar last year its awesome what all you can do thanks for all the videos man
That's a really nice setup. I'm just getting started with mine. I have a system that only has 2 100 amp hour batteries. I need to get another system set up soon that can run our well pump.
Your information is useful
I love the hat brother! I'm down in South East Idaho, in Idaho Falls. Here comes the snow!
Thanks
You're welcome! Thanks for the Super Thanks!
nice project!!
Another great video.👍🏽
Happy to say I just ordered my setup. Everything should arrive in a week or so. Went with your entire setup. I’m going to hook mines up just like yours since you already did the hard work 😂👍🏽
nice project!
Good to see that you can run all those things on the inverters. Also an idea to charge at night when the electricity price is lowest, but you probably do not have the option, only with the gas price
Getting SOLAR soon…watched from Gander Newfoundland and Labrador Canada!
Hi Martin thank you for the great videos I love the way you explain things what your are doing I have no idea when it comes to solar panels and solar charging batteries but I will be soon because I’m getting Motor home Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia
This is an awesome system. I really like the way you can charge the system and home at the same time. I want to get a transfer switch installed on my panel. We’re still using cords. Ugh.
We need to figure out wind. Because no day has no wind. We get that in tandem with Solar and it’s over. Great video Martin
Thanks Martin. I don't know why, but YT rarely "recommends" your stuff. Anyway, as an RV'r who is into solar, I hope the future of electric devices in the US moves toward an inclusion of 5v & 12v devices with dedicated LV wiring.
What I'm seeing is that there are now 120 VAC outlets that include 5vDC USB plugs.
