      I understand living off grid this is something you absolutely need. The question is, these are all very expensive pieces so by the time you need to replace the parts would it actually pay for itself versus the option of hooking onto the grid? I see a few people in my area doing this but with the convenience and reliability also playing into it, the savings would need to be substantial to even consider it. My electric bill averages around 75 a month and would take a very long time to pay for 20k worth of solar.

    • @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving

      We do it because we want to. It is not about the money. We like independence.

      @@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving i think you misunderstood my question. I totally understand why you do it and applaud you for doing so. I was asking for myself. I could install solar but have dependable and fairly reasonable priced electricity where I live. I was wondering if you could actually pay for the system versus what it would cost say paying 100$ a month within the life of the equipment?

    • @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving
      @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving  Před 2 lety +1

      Sorry. Right I misunderstood. Probably 15-20 years I would bet.

    For anyone wondering. I've calculated around $15k for this setup.
    Batteries-$800 per x 8= 6400
    Solar panels -$400 per 10=4000
    Chargers/controllers= around $1500
    Wiring/etc- around 700.
    Very rough numbers other than batteries and panels. But close to or over $13k-17k

    • @rixtrix11
      @rixtrix11 Před rokem +3

      Battleborn stuff is among the most expensive out there. Not everyone is sponsored, so do your homework before rushing into a system install. I recommend San Tan Solar for panels; best prices around, but just a small portion of the cost of a system.

    • @matthewnoblin9209
      @matthewnoblin9209 Před rokem +9

      @@rixtrix11 I was just adding the price of the total setup for anyone wondering. It's a pet peeve of mine when I watch videos talking about products and there is no price breakdown. Especially for something that is so expensive. I'm not commenting on the products themselves or choosing a system.

    • @rixtrix11
      @rixtrix11 Před rokem +3

      Didn't mean this to be directed to you personally[Althouse now I see it could be taken that way. Sorry]. I was only wanting to recommend to anyone considering a system to take time to do a LOT of research into their needs and costs. Thank for listing the pricing! Really surprised when Marty upgraded to this as he was always so frugal in the past.
      Check out Red and Robin Off Grid for their $6400, 6000w split phase (120/240V) system. A little more work involved, but much less out of pocket expense. Just another angle to solar power...

    At $800 per battery and $15,000 for the whole package, no wonder he's over the top with enthusiasm for this company if they gave it to him for a stellar review. They weren't selling many at this price and were desperate to try to get traction on their overpriced products so we not.
    Victron is an excellent product and not overpriced like the "Battle Born" brand however.

    Very cool I could see a couple of things I would do differently. I would buy a large enough charge controller to handle the entire system. I have Cirrus truck camper and installed one solar panel and could add two more but for my needs one has worked just fine. I have the Victron 100/30 charge controller. I just got back from a 7400 mile trip and only used the generator twice because of the extreme heat. I did drive through Idaho by the way and when I got to Boise it was over 100+ and I had to run generator while I was waiting on oil change at the Ford dealership. We live in Florida and our house was built in 1999 so when I have a new roof installed I'm going solar. Down here we will be able to be 100% off grid and sell power back to FPL.

    This is an awesome system. I really like the way you can charge the system and home at the same time. I want to get a transfer switch installed on my panel. We’re still using cords. Ugh.

    We need to figure out wind. Because no day has no wind. We get that in tandem with Solar and it’s over. Great video Martin

    Thanks Martin. I don't know why, but YT rarely "recommends" your stuff. Anyway, as an RV'r who is into solar, I hope the future of electric devices in the US moves toward an inclusion of 5v & 12v devices with dedicated LV wiring.

      What I'm seeing is that there are now 120 VAC outlets that include 5vDC USB plugs.
