I sat down for an interview with Bob Dalton, the founder of Project Lugger.
The Lugger Falcon is facing mass decline over their entire wild range across the Indian Subcontinent. Whilst accurate data is hard to come by, it is estimated as little as 10,000 to 20,000 individuals remain in the wild.
The inhumane practice referred to as 'Barak', where wild Luggers are illegally trapped and used as live bait for larger falcons to sell for the Arab market, results in large numbers of Lugger Falcons dying every year. Combined with continued habitat loss, persecution of their preferred prey item and extensive use of the harmful DDT pesticide, the future of Lugger Falcons in the wild is very much under threat.
"The aims of the Project are exceedingly simple in their aim and extremely difficult in their execution. We want to halt the decline of the species and where possible, only when circumstances permit, help with species management.
In the UK and Europe, through monitored domestic breeding we are building a diverse gene pool, to form a future healthy and stable safety net population, should the situation arise where re-population in the affected countries is necessary.
Establishing strong and respected relationships with the authorities and locals in Pakistan and in future, with other affected countries, is a crucial objective in creating a sustainable environment for wild Lugger Falcons.
Continued trips, meetings and exchanges in Pakistan has led to a strong presence for Project Lugger in the area, and is something that we intend to build on in the coming years."
I hope you join me in support of Project Lugger

Do read full comment. I'm from Pakistan. And thank you very much to Mr Bob . He's doing great work and it's so great to see that him despite being 72 , is doing all these efforts to conserve a species of Raptor (lugger) which belongs to a far area from UK (Pakistan and India). I thought that only habitat loss was main reason for decline of lugger. But it's sooo sad to see that these falcons are also used as bait to trap other falcons in Pakistan. I thought that only that small raptor red headed merlin (also known as red necked falcon ) was only used as bait to trap other falcons in Pakistan. Red headed merlin despite being the common local bird is also facing same fate as laggar but thankfully in captivity it's being bred easily. But it was a surprise to me that laggar is also used for these purpose. I'm a falconry enthusiast and I'll hopefully start soon training with Shikra. I personally like lugger falcon as it's native bird in Pakistan too. And surprising thing is that it's the only affordable falcon in Pakistan (60$ to 100$) that a common person can afford. Sadly due to this bait practice it's population is declining which is sad to me and other falconry enthusiast who like falcons but can't afford saker, peregrine, black shaheen etc because these falcons (even some local ones) are no less than 1000$ for Pakistan people because of falconry trade in gulf countries. I hope that the day comes when laggar falcon population increases and every common falconer in Pakistan can enjoy falconry with this falcon. Thank you very much. Salute.

A very nice piece. Most informative with good questions that hopefully will educate everyone so that they can speak more knowledgeable about the current plight of the Lugger. Good one Dan 👍
