    Bowline Knot: The bowline is an ancient and simple knot used to form a fixed "eye" at the end of a rope. It has the virtues of being both easy to tie and untie; most notably, it is easy to untie after being subjected to a load. The bowline is sometimes referred to as King of the knots because of its importance.
    Clove Hitch: The clove hitch is a type of knot. Along with the bowline and the sheet bend, it is often considered one of the most important knots and is commonly referred to as a Double Hitch. A clove hitch is two successive half-hitches around an object. It is most effectively used as a crossing knot.
    Noose Knot: A noose is a loop at the end of a rope in which the knot tightens under load and can be loosened without. The knot can be used to secure a rope to a post or pole, but only where the end is in a position that the loop can be passed over.
    Square/ Reef Knot: The reef knot, or square knot, is an ancient and simple binding knot used to secure a rope or line around an object. It is sometimes also referred to as a Hercules knot. The knot is formed by tying a left-handed overhand knot and then a right-handed overhand knot, or vice versa.
    Sheet Bend: The sheet bend is a bend. It is practical for joining lines of different diameter or rigidity. It is quick and easy to tie, and is considered so essential it is the first knot given in the Ashley Book of Knots.
    Figure 8 Loop: A figure-eight loop is a type of knot created by a loop on the bight. It is used in climbing and caving where rope strains are light to moderate and for decorative purposes. The knot is commonly followed by tying a strangle knot or an overhand knot around the standing end.
    Heaving Line: A heaving line knot is a family of knots which are used for adding weight to the end of a rope, to make the rope easier to throw. In nautical use, a heaving line knot is often tied to the end of a messenger line, which is then used for pulling a larger rope, such as a hawser.

    5 of these knots i found in a really old survival book. sheet bend is definitely my favorite. the reef knot is good for getting 2 pieces of rope together when they are the same, but the sheet bend is useful for attaching 2 different diameters of rope together

    Sheet bend advantage is that it can be tied under tension...like when your guy line is too short, on cold windy night, you can hold the side with the bight steady and complete the knot one handed, hence lengthening the guy line. Also works well when both lines are the same diameter.

    Pulling line at work, once we have the lines we are pulling rigged we tie the end of the pull line to the rigging. I use a knot similar to the double sheet bend, but instead of passing under on the second wrap I pass the working end threw the bite in the orange rope in your case. Kind of looks like a mix of a sheet bend and a square knot.

    In my experimenting, I've found that the noose doesn't work any better than the taut-line hitch or any other adjustable hitch that won't tighten unless you take hold of it and move it. All of them are quicker and easier to make. Although the noose works well as a hitch, the main reason for all that coiling is to create a lever which will break the condemned man's neck, when positioned correctly, better than any other way.

    • @ernestitoe
      @ernestitoe Před 2 lety

      @@tylerherring9930 The barrel knot is a stopper knot. The noose and the taut-line hitch, for examples, are used to make an adjustable loop which, once made the size you want it, won't tighten when there's a load on it.

    • @tylerherring9930
      @tylerherring9930 Před 2 lety

      @@ernestitoe it’s not just a stopper knot. The double fisherman’s knot is two barrel knots tied sequentially. You can use the barrel knot to make an adjustable loop. If you don’t want it to tighten, a bowline would be way simpler and quicker. I’m with you though; the noose knot is kind of absurd to be called essential.

    Missing the anglers knot… far better than the bowline as it applies tension to both forks in the “Y” equally, plus it can be finished with a quick-release pull instead of a dead-end standing side making it very easy to fully untie with one pull no matter how tight its been drawn.
